Amazon became the world’s largest online retailer in part by outsourcing its sprawling operations to algorithms—sets of computer instructions designed to solve specific problems. For years, the company has used algorithms to manage the millions of third-party merchants on its online marketplace, drawing complaints that sellers have been booted off after being falsely accused of selling counterfeit goods and jacking up prices.

Increasingly, the company is ceding its human-resources operation to machines as well, using software not only to manage workers in its warehouses but to oversee contract drivers, independent delivery companies and even the performance of its office workers. People familiar with the strategy say Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos believes machines make decisions more quickly and accurately than people, reducing costs and giving Amazon a competitive advantage.

Amazon started its gig-style Flex delivery service in 2015, and the army of contract drivers quickly became a critical part of the company’s delivery machine. Typically, Flex drivers handle packages that haven’t been loaded on an Amazon van before the driver leaves. Rather than making the customer wait, Flex drivers ensure the packages are delivered the same day. They also handle a large number of same-day grocery deliveries from Amazon’s Whole Foods Market chain. Flex drivers helped keep Amazon humming during the pandemic and were only too happy to earn about $25 an hour shuttling packages after their Uber and Lyft gigs dried up.

But the moment they sign on, Flex drivers discover algorithms are monitoring their every move. Did they get to the delivery station when they said they would? Did they complete their route in the prescribed window? Did they leave a package in full view of porch pirates instead of hidden behind a planter as requested? Amazon algorithms scan the gusher of incoming data for performance patterns and decide which drivers get more routes and which are deactivated. Human feedback is rare. Drivers occasionally receive automated emails, but mostly they’re left to obsess about their ratings, which include four categories: Fantastic, Great, Fair or At Risk.

Bloomberg interviewed 15 Flex drivers, including four who say they were wrongly terminated, as well as former Amazon managers who say the largely automated system is insufficiently attuned to the real-world challenges drivers face every day. Amazon knew delegating work to machines would lead to mistakes and damaging headlines, these former managers said, but decided it was cheaper to trust the algorithms than pay people to investigate mistaken firings so long as the drivers could be replaced easily.

Going back to that discussion from the previous thread about whether are not the Ferengi of Star Trek are basically “Space Jews”, I would say no.

They are a race of greedy capitalists who are not really established in Trek lore to have experienced any widespread racial persecution. Also, I’m not sure there is much religion in the Ferengi culture. Sure, the Grand Nagus has the trappings of a religious leader but he’s more like the Grand CEO. The Star Trek wiki describes his role thusly:

“The Grand Nagus was the leader of the Ferengi Alliance, and the financial leader of billions of Ferengi. Virtually all decisions that affected the Alliance required the approval of the Grand Nagus, whose power was backed by the Ferengi Bill of Opportunities and supported by the Board of Liquidators.

The Nagus’s offices were located in the Tower of Commerce on Ferenginar, where he presided over the Alliance from the Chamber of Opportunity. Petitioners regularly sought to speak to the Nagus to solicit advice on business ventures and decisions.”

It’s also established that while Ferengi are primarily driven by profit and financial gain, they can sometimes be selfless and genuinely care for people. It’s well established that Quark does care for most of the senior staff of DS9, even Odo. Rom also made some very serious sacrifices during the Dominion War to help the Federation win (though he did eventually become Grand Nagus himself).

I see the Ferengi as basically a race of intergalactic corporate suits who for the most part are only interested in making money above all else and not so much focused on race or religion.

It’s my understanding that Roddenberry chose the name “Ferengi” for the space capitalists as a direct reference to the East India Company’s corporate contract-rule of India under the Raj.

“Firanji” being the Hindi/Urdu/Farsi/Arabic word for “white foreigners” and particularly European colonialists, and all that.

Not only that, but one has to wonder just how relevant “Jimmy Carter” references are going to be in 2021, seeing as how Carter left the WH forty years ago.

I know the GOP has spent decades trying to paint old Jimmy as The Worst Failed President EVAH!!! (sort of a James Buchanan minus the Civil War thing) - but SRSLY? Aren’t most people under 50 going to think of Carter mainly as the old guy still injuring himself building housing in his 90s…?

One of the more serendipitous chairlift rides I’ve taken was on the Silver Queen Gondola in Aspen on 7 March 2013. I get in the singles line and breeze on in to a gondola, and a dude a few paces behind me in a red jacket gets on with me, we sit across from each other. He takes off his goggles, it’s Joel Cummins! Keyboardist for Umphrey’s McGee! See, that’s why I was skiing at Aspen that day, I was seeing the band that night at the Belly Up club.

The Silver Queen Gondola is a 15 minute ride on a good day. So we shot the shit, had a very pleasant conversation. Found out he had a degree in theology from Notre Dame and was *gasp* an atheist. We took a couple of runs. We got someone to take our picture.

(this was taken on my old iPhone 4S, I put all the pictures on a couple of hard drives before I replaced the phone, I don’t know why it’s sideways)

re: #97 A Three Hour Tour

I need my memory refreshed since it’s been almost 20 years since 9/11 and the rise of the right-wing blogosphere out of the warbloggers that came to prominence in the aftermath of that attack.

Just how soon did “Allahpundit” come on the scene afterward and what online presence did he have before, if any?

I remember it being fairly early, but I could be wrong.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

Allahpundit (born September 5, c. 1972) is an anonymous blogger and the senior editor for the American political news and commentary website Hot Air.

The persona of Allahpundit first appeared through a parody blog, Allah Is In the House, which rose in popularity circa 2003 by being referenced throughout the conservative and anti-jihadist blogosphere. In March and April 2006, Allahpundit guest-blogged for Michelle Malkin before becoming the most active contributor to Malkin’s Hot Air.

Very early. From the beginning, really. He first became popular by doing anti-Muslim photoshops, then deleted them all and there’s apparently no trace left of them on the web.

Don’t know. It’s paywalled.

The deal was concluded at the OECD in Paris on Thursday after the G7 group of leading economies reached an agreement last month.

It will introduce a global minimum corporate tax rate of at least 15 per cent and grant countries new rights to tax large companies based on where they earn their revenues, rather than where they are located.

—-

Just two weeks ago many countries were refusing to sign up, prompting an intense period of high-level arm twisting by the US, which reinvigorated the stalled global talks earlier this year by setting out fresh proposals.

The video in the previous article lays out the timeline fantastically. At about the 28 minute mark they cover the shooting. There were 3 regular cops in front of the door without riot gear. As they saw a group of either swat or riot cops coming up behind the crowd they cleared out. At that point, when the three cops in front had cleared out and the riot cops were still at the back of the group is when Babbit went through the window.

Involuntary manslaughter (instead of felony murder), conspiracy to commit assault and battery, conspiracy to obstruct justice, housebreaking (instead of burglary), hazing and making false official statements
Final member convicted. Other three took pleas. Figure this hero will get the most severe sentence. The SEAL that actually choked him to death got 10 years for involuntary manslaughter, obstruction of justice and hazing.

Video

That reminds me of a show I shot years back, with my dad. I’m in the back with the 8” mortars, my dad’s up front with the 3” guns. We also had banks of 5” and 6” guns in between. Each bank had a shooter and a loader. Well, right as it was getting to be show time, it started to rain, out of the blue. We had already loaded the field, and we didn’t want all that product getting wet, so we started firing everything as fast as was safe. Boy howdy, rural Indiana hasn’t seen a blaze of gunfire like that since William Henry Harrison fought Tecumseh on the banks of the Tippecanoe River. Round about the time we finished firing the field, the rain stopped, so we decided to continue the show as planned. However, we got a little sloppy because we were worried the rain would return. Our finale was supposed to be a series of 3” shells chain-fused together; they were supposed to be loaded carefully, each in its own tube, as cross-loading could cause problems. Wouldn’t you know it, my dad’s loader cross-loaded two tubes. He fires the fuse, and I’m standing there in the back a hundred feet away and see a shell flop out of its tube and land right at his feet. I’ve never seen my old man run so fast in my life. No damage was done and nobody was hurt, but yikes, I was sure I was going to watch my dad get blown up in real time.

That’s a stretch to seriously consider an auto correct of radical to racial

Have to say that on my phone last year, when I started typing “prot”, the phone helpfully suggested “protomolecule” as the default autocomplete. So, suggestions are tied to words that it recalled that you frequently used — and “racial” is likely a very popular word in Rand’s vocabulary. But then again, so is “radical”.

I have not! That’s pretty epic.

I have several stories about shooting professional-grade fireworks. I was licensed for several years, shot shells both manually and electronically. (The electronic shoot was an absolute SHIT SHOW.) I always favored the heavy artillery, the satisfying *WHUMP* of the shell leaving the ground.

If you happen to have about 30 minutes, there are two time-lapse videos: one of a Blue Tit mama taking over an empty bird house and building her nest and laying her eggs, over 46 days. The second one is 21 days from hatching to fledging. The interplay between the parents was so cute. And suddenly the mother flattened out over the babies and shut them up and did not appear to even breathe. Then this monstrous beak and claw (probably a crow?) pokes into the hole. Anyway, I sure did not intend to waste time watching these, and I adored them.

I’m going to have a fun weekend. Cleo is scared to death of fireworks and the jackasses who live in the subdivision behind us are already firing them off. She won’t even go out to pee or poop with this happening. I can’t imagine what this is like for people with combat related ptsd. Then we have the idiots who have cars designed to backfire on purpose. What the actual fuck is this about? It started a few months ago and it’s been happening non stop since. Apparently it’s not illegal either. Wtf?

Lizards calling it a night. Got a lot of yard work done this morning before the heat set in, but even after a nap, I am still beat. Picked up some more supplies up this afternoon for the R.V. project from a vendor that made the promise of curbside delivery a fucking joke.
