In good news, San Diego county is at 74.4% (12+) fully vaccinated, and 85.0% partially vaccinated.

Cases have gone up of course with the rest of the Delta surge, and there is thus an increase in hospital occupancy.

However, the ICU capacity is not yet breached.

I put that down to the relatively high vaccination rate compared to some parts of the US.

Case rates are 7x higher for unvaccinated compared to vaccinated.

Hospitalizations are 32x higher for unvaccinated compared to vaccinated.

That last statistic is really all the evidence one needs to shut up the anti-vaxxers.

MrsTarH needed a heart procedure today. She was lucky to get a room, given that we had been told earlier she would have to spend the night in outpatient recovery. Hospital is being overrun with COVID cases. My county is only 36 percent vaccinated.

Just so effing fed up with TFG, GQP, and right-wing propaganda! I try to be the nice, understanding guy with folks. Not gonna be so nice going forward with those who would endanger my wife’s life, or mine.

The media cheered because they wanted stories that let them perpetuate the myth that Donny was “not a normal president,” while the MAGAts cheered because they got off on the idea of “libruls” being pissed at what their God-Emperor was doing.

Neither group ever really believed that it was a step towards getting us out of Afghanistan. They were both sure that once the election was over, the “get us out” rhetoric would end and the bombings would recommence.

NYT: How Government Decisions Left Tennessee Exposed to Deadly Flooding

If all you read is the headline you’d think it was that satanic gubmint who are killing Tennesseans.

But if one reads the article:

[…]

The story of the disaster in Humphreys County, the hardest-hit area in the state, arguably begins in the late 1970s, when the federal government began offering communities around the country a deal: If they agreed to take basic precautions to limit the damage from flooding, the government would let people in those communities buy publicly subsidized flood insurance.

Most cities and counties said yes. But not all of them. Humphreys County declined to take part, federal records show. So did neighboring Houston County, which was hit as well over the weekend. (Some cities within those counties, such as Waverly, which was hit hardest by the floods, do take part in the program.)

A spokeswoman for Humphreys County said officials there were unavailable to comment. But in general, communities that decide to stay out of the flood insurance program typically do so because of an aversion to building restrictions, according to Roy Wright, who ran the program until 2018.

[…]

No building codes

As officials in Humphreys County spurned the federal government’s offer of flood insurance, they were shaping the future of the county in another way: by declining to adopt residential building codes.

The headline **ought** to be: “Locals who willfully spurned government officials now paying the price in floods”.

But no, that would have been too direct to the point and put the blame where it rightly belongs.

Chances are really good that the locals who thought they didn’t need those intruding government flood experts also think they don’t need any government vaccine or mask mandates.

Of course. Because just like those flood victims who are now pissed that the government wasn’t there to bail them out, the anti-vaxxers want so badly to believe that they can just wait until they’re already sick before seeking out a “cure” for COVID.

Likely true, but to me the tell is the bit about “residential building codes” : my guess is the locals decided that cheapskating cutting their initial costs was more important than thinking about what might happen in case of a bad flood.

With a heavy heart, this week’s #tbt features the beloved Miraculous Love Kids, the charity I’ve been involved with and collaborating with for the last 8 years. The founder and reknown guitarist, Lanny Cordola, (the creator and past guitarist for famous hard Rock musicians) is stuck in Islamabad right now, wondering if he and the girls can find safety. I may never see those Afghan girls I worked with ever again, and their lives are literally in danger. Along with them are virtually any and all bravely unmarried women with respectable careers who drive their own cars are being abused, whipped in the streets publicly, and forced into marriage with taliban soldiers.

It looks like after so much blood, sweat, & tears for building this community, it’s all gone now. On a personal note, it is very serious for the families of the Miraculous Love Kids. I can only hope they find refuge at this point.

If you have any contacts with military or security personnel who are helping to arrange safe passage to the airport and seats on planes, please contact LANNY CORDOLA, who is currently in Islamabad, Pakistan. He can be reached 24 hours a day by telephone at +[no phone numbers allowed] and email at lcordola19@gmail.com

I’ve seen the same mentality again and again here in VA with regards to those folks who live on the Outer Banks, an area that has problems with coastal flooding even when there’s no hurricanes: “They wouldn’t let that happen.” The they is understood to be the government, whether it’s the state government that keeps shelling out money to keep the homes of wealthy and/or elderly donors from getting washed into the sea, or the federal government that foots the bills for such projects as well as providing access to affordable insurance policies for same.

Repeat after me, right-wing propaganda outlet talking heads: Ashli Babbit was a domestic terrorist and part of a violent mob invading the Capitol intent to do physical harm to, up to including the outright murder of, the vice-president of the United States and the Speaker of the House of Representatives with the intent of overturning the legitimate results of a valid election, thus overthrowing the legitimate government of the United States. Byrd’s actions were justified and proper.

Capitol police, in the Capitol… that’s totally federal. The city has nothing to do with it.
