TBH I haven’t been that impressed with Sting’s latest music, but this song is a return to form.

Very Police-ish in the guitar department!

He’s retained his sense of humor lyrically, too.

Bullshit is right. It’s either Cheeto or they will have to get to work proving that Putin was born in L.A. while his parents were on deep cover passing out bribe money to Hollywood screenwriters.

Nearly forgot: “We’re Glad for Vlad! Putin ‘24.”
Who should he pick as a running mate? Alex Jones? Nikki Haley? The Rage Furby?

i don’t know who claims a les paul is easier to play than a strat, but they’re full of it. Absolutely loving the pro ii. It will be my forever guitar. I will hug it and squeeze it. I will call it George.

Shooting in a bar about 2 miles from my house last night. 1 killed and 14 wounded. Apparently multiple guns pulled during an argument. Three men around 30 YO were arrested after being hospitalized. This area just west of the Xcel Center is one of the more popular nightspots in St. Paul and is usually pretty low drama. Crap.

I don’t understand people who say they need to ‘adjust’ between playing a Les Paul and a Strat. I don’t even think about adjusting, I just pick up whichever guitar and play it.

And a lot depends on setup, too. I’ve played both that were absolute dogs and put them right back down. It took me a while, but I’ve got examples of both that play really well.

Worst guitar I ever touched, bar none, was a friend’s Les Paul that he proudly strung with .011 strings. It felt like hatred and animus.

I’ve never tried the opposite end of the spectrum — the Billy Gibbons / Frank Zappa .007 setup — but it can’t possibly be worse than the egg slicer that was that Les Paul.

I was lucky that my Epiphone Les Paul turned out to be a really righteous guitar for 400 bucks. Great sound, really nice fingerboard. But it is a goddamn slab of wood. It is like walking 4 miles home while carrying you and your girlfriend’s books: it may well be worth it, but you’ll feel it. The Strat is effortless to pick up, and in spite of Clapton’s statement that he thought his bends choked out on the rosewood board, I’m not experiencing that at all.

yeah, i think people got into .11’s because of the whole Stevie Ray Vaughn thing. Stevie had absolutely massive hands. And he ended up with tendinitis, which he dealt with by tuning down half a step to make the bends easier.

I always thought the Gibbons setup story was just another of the Rev’s tall tales, but got verification from someone ho does pickup gigs with him that yeah, he did actually play with those super-duper light strings.

Me? I’d be busting strings left and right. I can get pretty good action out of .10s and I’ll stick with them.

I ran through about 20 Les Pauls that went from ‘kinda heavy’ to ‘boat anchor,’ the worst being about 14 pounds. I finally found an old Standard that’s just shy of 10 pounds, and that’s pretty bearable for a couple of hours.

OTOH, I’ve got a T-body that a guy in Wisconsin built, made out of Northern Ash. It’s weight relieved and still feels like a bag of rocks when I put it on. Sounds great, though, so there’s your trade-off. :)

I went to .8’s on the Les Paul, and my life with it has never been happier. I wonder if it really is just a question of which guitar you are on. I have .9’s on the Strat (because the obsessive compulsive part of me thought whoever strung it before they sent it to me did a shit job) and it feels fine to me. But I had .10’s on the Les Paul and it was a real heavy lift trying to string bend. I put the .8’s on and suddenly all those licks in Brit Guitar Heroes by Jesse Gess become very doable. By the way: full confession. I absolutely suck at guitar. I know no theory and there are some barre chords that my tiny little reptile hands can’t manage. But I absolutely love playing a tab lick and thinking “Yeah, that fucking sounded like Clapton/Beck/Otis Rush.”

An old friend of mine has started using .95s! I don’t even know if there would be a difference worth noticing, but he really likes ‘em.

I’ve used 10s since way back when Fender was the only company who made them (their ‘Rock and Roll’ set), and I’m an old dog, so you know where that leaves the new tricks. :)

Before I left Michigan last month my friend gave me on of his basses. It’s a 4-string Samick. Problem is the neck’s cracked and bent all weird, rendering it useless. I want to replace the neck, no dice on Google searches thus far. Can I use just any neck or does it have to be a Samick neck? Any guitar heads’ advice would be appreciated. I’ve always wanted my own bass and I almost have one.

My high school gym class spent a day on the fundamentals of curling in our hockey arena. They made their own curling stones by pouring concrete into coffee cans and sticking a bent metal rod into the concrete. Unless you set them down perfectly flat, the edge of the coffee can would dig into the ice and fall over. It was an entertaining lesson but I did not become a curling enthusiast.

I think I mentioned that my evil too big to fail employer has pushed back the return to office into early January. However, they have doubled—nay TRIPLED down. They want EVERYONE to return to office, including those people who were hired with the expectation that they’d work from home or those who spent the entire ‘10s working from home.

As you can imagine, when there was an infrastructure tech team meeting last week, this made up a good chunk of the questions. It will not go well…

Love that tune. My pops would play that album a lot when I was a kid. In fact I heard that one before I ever heard “Miserlou.”

The story goes he got the inspiration for that song from his first time snowboarding.

re: #47 teleskiguy

Before I left Michigan last month my friend gave me on of his basses. It’s a 4-string Samick. Problem is the neck’s cracked and bent all weird, rendering it useless. I want to replace the neck, no dice on Google searches thus far. Can I use just any neck or does it have to be a Samick neck? Any guitar heads’ advice would be appreciated. I’ve always wanted my own bass and I almost have one.

Look up the specs on the Samick - scale length (important), neck profile (less important), and neck pocket width (medium important). Your scale of the new neck has gotta match up or you’ll never get it intonated. If the neck pocket is a little too tight you can always remove a little bit of material with a Dremel or a file, but if it’s too wide you stand the chance of your neck shifting. Every Fender style neck joint/pocket has a little bit of play in it but you don’t want too much.

According to Dick Dale’s Wikipedia, he says he had to keep touring to the end of his life because his healthcare costs were bankrupting him and he had to keep earning money the only way he knew how. When he died in March 2019 he had tour dates scheduled into November of that year.

Reminds me of what happened to Vic Chesnutt. Before the ACA he was “uninsurable” because he was quadriplegic, which left him in deep debt for much of his life. He attempted suicide many times. He died on Christmas Day 2009 after overdosing on muscle relaxers.

What we saw on 1/6 is about as close as you’re going to see as far as “organization” on the part of these fuckers. They’d start killing each other before they could even begin to hash out a command structure, let alone logistics and communications. Likewise, 1/6 showed that most of the fantasies about the LEO and Armed Forces throwing their lot in with the “patriots” fell apart as soon as the cops realized the coup wasn’t going to succeed and they’d be subject to disciplinary action or even incarceration as soon as the dust settled.

12s would kill me. :)

Even with acoustic strings, I’ll go with lighter gauges. I started using Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze acoustic strings (after noticing that most of the players on CandyRat that have been posted here use them), and even with those I opt for the ‘semi-light gauge,’ which are 11s.

…..You have less of a chance of spreading it if you are vaccinated. There’s no reason we can’t eradicate it. Smallpox had been around for hundreds of years and we finally eliminated it. I, for one, think that having 2% of those who catch it dying and 30% with long term effects bad.

Smallpox could be eliminated because its only host was humans; Covid infects a wide variety of mammals and therefore it is unlikely that it can be eradicated with our current technology; we don’t even know the home of the bats that were the original hosts of this disease.

I’ve vowed to be good enough in 3 years to take it to the park, yes! Accompanied by the tone master twin reverb I have showing up tomorrow:-)

Ooh, a Tonemaster? I’ve heard great things about those amps, you gotta let me know how you like it. The idea of having the tone and power of a Twin without the back-breaking weight is pretty intriguing - although if I was getting a Tone master I’d maybe go for the Deluxe. That one would be a little more manageable, volume-wise.

i don’t know who claims a les paul is easier to play than a strat, but they’re full of it. Absolutely loving the pro ii. It will be my forever guitar. I will hug it and squeeze it. I will call it George.

I just bought a Les Paul last month after playing a Strat for 30+ years. I’ve found the LP to be noticeably more difficult to play. I’m getting used to it, but it’s taking some effort. I think it’s part “Neck is feels larger” part “The guitar probably needs to be set up for me by an actual expert.”

Les Paul neck widths vary depending on which model you get. The 50s Tributes have a chunkier neck while the 60s tributes and reissues have the ‘slim taper’ neck.

I’m partial to the 60s profile on the Standard, although my LP Special has the fatter 50s neck.

re: #87 Targetpractice

What we saw on 1/6 is about as close as you’re going to see as far as “organization” on the part of these fuckers. They’d start killing each other before they could even begin to hash out a command structure, let alone logistics and communications. Likewise, 1/6 showed that most of the fantasies about the LEO and Armed Forces throwing their lot in with the “patriots” fell apart as soon as the cops realized the coup wasn’t going to succeed and they’d be subject to disciplinary action or even incarceration as soon as the dust settled.

No — 1/6 was Trump’s Beer Hall Putsch. Like the original it failed, but it didn’t stop that perpetrator from gaining power and instigating the most destructive war the world has seen. Don’t count on the LEO and Armed Forces behaving themselves the next time around, unless everyone involved in support of the insurrection including elected officials are tried and convicted and sent to prison for their role.

Catching up:

On guitar strings: I like 10/47 and have used a 0.012 as high E that was a B on super lights. I liked the tone

On Les Paul, I find them very playable sitting down with the body resting on my knee

I play Fender Stratacoustic and Telecoustic in the garage and the Tele neck is wider and more like LP. I find Strat neck just a hint too narrow

On string brand: I like Stringjoy electric and Elixir acoustic. I’m in the camp that thinks corrosion is worse for tone than work hardening

Picture: garage stratacoustic

My sister was a strong advocate for unions (she was in the teacher’s union before she left teaching) and never forgave Reagan for firing them. But this is a dramatically different situation and appears to be the first real challenge that anti-vaxxers are posing to the mandate. Police officers/fire fighters/military forces and other rabid Trump supporters will take heart from this action unless it’s squelched now.

As a JAX resident I can confirm that military aircraft activity has been unusually high for several days. And that apparently F/A-18 pilots have a certain affinity for flying the St. Johns river at low level. Quite the sight as they follow the river’s course through the city at high speed with the required severe banking as the river snakes it’s way south

Yay!! Am relieved to hear that it wasn’t an organized sickout, but just a confluence of events that might impact travel for a couple days, including a large group getting the vaccine and taking required time off to monitor side effects. The last thing you want is a distracted air traffic controller due to vaccine side effects.
