LYRICS:

German puppets burned the Jews
Jewish puppets did not choose
Puppet vultures eat the dead
Puppet corpses they are fed
Puppet winds and puppet waves
Puppet sailors in their graves
Puppet flower, puppet stem
Puppet time dismantles them
Puppet me and puppet you
Puppet German
Puppet Jew

Puppet Presidents command
Puppet troops to burn the land
Puppet fire, puppet flames
Feed on all the puppet names

Puppet lovers in their bliss
Turn away from all of this
Puppet reader shakes his head
Takes his puppet wife to bed
Puppet me and puppet you
Puppet German, puppet Jew

Puppet Presidents command
Puppet troops to burn the land
Puppet fire, puppet flames
Feed on all the puppet names
Puppet night comes down to play
The after act to puppet day

Just now reading about teleski’s meltdown. Bummer…ski’s many homages to Umphries McGee and others introduced me to so much good music. Hope he can smoke a bowl and get it figured out…

Speaking of which…found a job a couple months ago that allows off-duty cannabis use. Started using indica gummies last month and I’m getting some of the best sleep I’ve had in years.

Just read an interview on CCN with Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, R-OH. He’s one of the ten GQPs to vote for impeachment and pretty much drops the boom on Trump, saying he led the party into a ditch and should never be allowed to hold office again.

Okay, so far, so good. Let’s read a little further.

Gonzalez beat a Trump-backed candidate to get re-elected. All right, not great that a Republican is re-elected, but the alternative was way worse. Let’s soldier on!

Ahh, now we find why Rep. Gonzalez is speaking his mind: he’s heading for the exits after this term. Like 99% of all Republicans, they only do the right thing as they’re jumping ship.

And now we get to the crux of the matter:

“If he’s the nominee again in ‘24, I will do everything I personally can to make sure he doesn’t win. Now I’m not voting for Democrats, but whether that’s finding a viable third party or whether that’s trying to defeat him in primaries, whatever it is, that’s going to be where I’ll spend my time,” he said. “January 6 was the line that can’t be crossed.”

All of the other bluster about doing everything to defeat a potential 2nd Trump run is simply bluster if you’re taking voting Democratic off the table. I appreciate that the guy did right thing via impeachment, but fuck him on the “Never elect a Democrat” both-sides bullshit.

Gonzalez is essentially saying that any Democrat is as bad as Trump. Which means if someone like Christie or Haley run, who are all the evil policies with none of the outward crazy, he’ll do that in a heart beat.

Fuck the people both running the party and those who still support it.

Not really sure what I can say re the teleskiguy/Joe Bacon flap that erupted overnight: other than I was quite disconcerted to see it. I realize that participating in a blogsite is a purely voluntary endeavor, and that commenters in a community (of a sort, which is what I think we are here) have the right to/can/should stay or leave at their pleasure. It’s one thing when it’s ideological (a la DF, or the irredentist Muslim-bashers in the Olden Days); it just seems to be unnecessarily harsh when it is “personal” issues - I mean, Joe would work my nerves a tad some times, but never to the point of wishing him ill, or wanting him gone. And Charlie’s ski posts were always intriguing. In my experience, LGF has always been a “nice neighborhood” to “live in”: it’s disconcerting when a loud noisy fight breaks out a few houses down, and one sees moving vans being called on short notice.
My $0.02, anyway

I shot the Houston Open yesterday and that chant of 12-year-olds was everywhere. People were yelling it after tee shots and chanting it from the stands surrounding the 15th green where they were trying to turn it into a version of the Phoenix Open. It’s the dumbest fucking thing in the world, so of course they think it’s clever.

Eclectic Cyborg  Nov 14, 2021 • 3:15:03pm

Austria is placing about 2 million unvaccinated people in lockdown from Monday amid record infection levels and growing pressure on hospitals.

”We are not taking this step lightly but it is necessary,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said.

Unvaccinated people will only be able to leave home for a limited number of reasons, like working or buying food.

About 65% of Austria’s population is fully vaccinated, one of the lowest rates in western Europe.

Meanwhile the seven-day infection rate is more than 800 cases per 100,000 people, one of the highest in Europe.

Overall, Europe has again become the region most seriously-affected by the pandemic and several countries are introducing restrictions and warning of rising cases.

I can only imagine the insanity that would follow if something like this was attempted in the U.S.

Yeah, I read through that CNN hatchet-job on the “Biden-Harris dysfunction”, and the reek of bullshit was choking. Vague citations, nobody willing to comment by name; “CW” generalities and superficialities abounding, (especially about 2024) - but little actual “evidence” (surprise!!). Oh yeah, and the “racism and sexism” issue demoted to one passing remark.

Yeah, I realize articles like “WH/Veep relations in dysfunction” sell a lot better than “WH/Veep relations running like clockwork”, but this is pretty trollish stuff. AFAICT, Biden and Harris have as good a POTUS/VPOTUS trip going as any First Duo have in memory (seriously, how much press interest did Mike Pence get in 2017? Or Biden himself in 2009? But, alas, good news doesn’t sell papers/get clicks…..

Ashkenazi Jews NEVER use a Jr or III. In fact, we never name a child after a living person.

The superstition is that someday, the Angel of Death will see this name on his day’s assignment list. If he’s in a mood that day, he might take IV instead of III, just to be a dick. Then he’ll have to swing back around for III, so now you’ve lost them both.

Also… unlikely, but someone has to win the lottery… if your child has the name of an already dead person, the Angel of Death might see that name on the list and say “oh, no, already got him, must be a mistake” and skips that pickup. It could take years before he realizes his error and comes back around.

My own family’s tradition is to never reuse a first name.

The last couple generations we’ve had a few unusual first names in my family. It’s why my ethnically-Polish son has a Celtic name.

It will be a poorer place without you.

This is a good corner of the internet. There aren’t many. Being a small community frees it from so much of the toxicity that pollutes other online communities, but as a result, every person that leaves is a large loss. We don’t gain too many new members, and over the years we have lost many - some made the place better by leaving, but that’s not very common nowadays.

What makes this even more of a community is that many feel safe enough to use their real names. I don’t, but I’m sure I’ve inadvertently mentioned enough over the years that it wouldn’t be too hard to find me. But those that do always impress me, and it makes all of us feel that we know each other all the better. Even with that, I think it’s easy to forget that we’re just people - people who have pressures, problems, idiosyncracies, and baggage - and that the internet can sometimes leave those wounds very raw.

These are difficult times. We can all use a place to rant and vent, and part of a community’s job in looking out for each other and taking care of each other is to be able to help when one of us crosses a line or rubs someone the wrong way. If someone needs to step away for a bit, that’s understandable, and I’m sure they’ll be welcome back with open arms whenever they care to return.

re: #9 Mattand

All of the other bluster about doing everything to defeat a potential 2nd Trump run is simply bluster if you’re taking voting Democratic off the table. I appreciate that the guy did right thing via impeachment, but fuck him on the “Never elect a Democrat” both-sides bullshit.

Gonzalez is essentially saying that any Democrat is as bad as Trump. Which means if someone like Christie or Haley run, who are all the evil policies with none of the outward crazy, he’ll do that in a heart beat.

Fuck the people both running the party and those who still support it.

I don’t have a problem with this. From the republican point of view the choice is to elect a corrupt manbaby who will lead the country to ruin through his incompetence or to elect someone competent who will intentionally implement policies diametrically opposed to what they believe and that will lead the country to ruin in just a different way. If we had more than 2 viable parties people wouldn’t have to make that kind of “split the baby” choice.

For the past four years and change, journalists and GOP insiders have been publishing books where they make all kinds of documented claims about the corruption, criminality, and misconduct by Trump and his cronies.

These didn’t get reported until the books were on their way to the shelves, not at the moment when they were occurring despite all the evidence of criminality and misconduct that was being reported.

The corroboration by named persons should have been done contemporaneously and it should be page A1 above the fold in 30 point font.

Instead, we learn about this in books where the Trump insiders are trying to rehab their images, or journalists held back bits of their reporting in order to publish books with “new” information.

Journalists should do better. Insiders should be hauled before Congress and courtrooms to testify under oath - that’s the only place where I want to hear from them.

I’ve only loosely been following the kerfuffle this weekend and that two long time members of this community decided to part under difficult circumstances. It is hard to watch, and I’ve been here over 20 years now. I’ve been here through the great flounce waves and the purges of the right wing extremists who used to call this site a home. My views have changed and moderated too, but keeping the conversations civil has always been important here especially since Charles instituted the login methods all so many years ago.

Joe,
I don’t know if we always see eye to eye on all issues, but I think the majority of us do treat you with respect and understand your positions, especially around the death of your son. Grief is a difficult thing and it can be like a raw nerve no matter how many years since that person’s death. Take care of yourself, and do consider lurking or returning at some later date. The community benefits from diversity of views and opinions.

Teleskiguy:
I appreciated your ski pics since I used to ski as a young’un and miss the mountain air and the freedom of cutting new edges in fresh snow (even if it’s the groomed variety and not the off trail powder you find yourself in all the time). Take care of yourself. I know you’ve had your ups and downs here and there off the slopes. Moderation and taking a few deep breaths before the plunge is always a good idea.

Charles,
Reading upthread, I see how this all puts you in a difficult spot, so you’ve got to do what’s best for yourself and your site (and sanity). I’ll continue supporting you as well. I got your back.

re: #112 lawhawk

Vi/vim has come in super handy when working with Docker containers. Many base images from third-party vendors have vi installed by default, and I can exec into them and figure out what’s broken. I wrote thousands of lines of code across dozens of projects using vim and my trusty Gentoo Linux box in my four years of computer science training. It really does come down to which one fits you better and which one you’re more used to, though.

Americans are rating the economy as worse right now because of how expensive shit is getting.

It’s also because the media is promoting this notion everywhere that this inflation is devastating and that higher unemployment is preferable to a few extra percent of inflation.

On Fareed this morning, Lawrence Summers attributed part of the inflation to the “too large” American Rescue Plan. OTOH he was totally supportive of the BIF and BBB infrastructure legislation since the bills are far smaller than the American Rescue Plan (expenditures over 10 years, not one year), they are mostly paid for by taxes, and they provide a necessary expenditures that will ultimately boost the economy through their improvements to our hard and soft infrastructure.

I have done a bit in PowerShell is it does have some useful stuff in it. Definite progress over the Windows Cmd stuff. Though I have also seen it be wonky here and there as well.

It might well have been that I was used to how DCL behaved when it was not working correctly and how to debug the scripts. Debugging CMD scripts just seemed to be sorcery at times given how it behaved regarding very innocuous changes in a script.

(My pet “gaaaaahh!” target currently is scripts being used inside the Arma 3 game. Since the editing is on a single machine, but it is played on a client-server setup locality of commands is a big issue and can make stuff that works great in editor testing go completely nuclear on a server.)

I’m figuring to hit Genghis Cohen’s (unknown to me until you mentioned it) someday and Phillippe’s French Dip (I’ve passed by so many times). Also, I enjoy the sayings of long past Bacon family members. Special.
Keep healthy as best you can. I struggle sometimes with diet and I suppose many of us do. Life to me is similar to diet in that sometimes I just have to make a little tweak and everything works much better. With me, its sweet stuff like a good pastry with a nice coffee. I gotta stay away from sugar. It’s a battle. I moved to Decaf coffee a couple months ago. It’s my most recent tweak and surprisingly everything mellowed out.

By the way, I’m gonna hit Louise’s Trattoria before year end and it will be Chicken Marsala as you recommend. You must like that dish because you also suggested the same for Maggiano’s.

I don’t know how you find the articles and pics that you post. Amazing.

How much of it is shit they need to buy, vs shit they are buying because they want it and have more money?

Sorry but groceries and gas are both way up. Objectively the economy as a whole was worse in march/april 2020, but subjectively if you never lost your job back then it will feel worse to you now.

So one minor challenge to this. In what way did Biden get a handle on Covid? I am not saying he didn’t try or even there was anything else he could do, but in the 9 months since the inauguration there have been about 350000 deaths(according to worldometer).

193 million Americans are fully vaccinated. Shopping malls, restaurants, movie theaters, Broadway, are all open again. Flights are full. There’s been fewer deaths in the 10 months since he took office, than in the 10 months before. And 95% of the people dying now are people who chose, of their own free will, to be unvaccinated.

And how much of it is shit that’s more expensive because of supply chain issues? Anything that needs semiconductor chips is more expensive because they can’t get enough chips. Imported stuff is more expensive because there’s dozens of ships can’t unload at the port, and even the ones that can unload there’s not enough truckers to get the stuff where it needs to go.

The one thing that might be Biden’s “fault” — Saudis may be strangling oil production and/or exports because they’re pissed off that Biden won’t forgive them for Kashoggi.

Thanks but I find very little joy in coding these days. At one time i wrote tons of popular tools in addition to code for telecom switching equipment. Spent 12 years before recently retiring troubleshooting networks and applications for the major telecom company. Being called at 4 a.m. and having to analyze thousands of lines of IP, TCP and SIP in real time while VPs were pulling their hair out sort of took the fun out of coding.

Do you have a minute to talk about our lord and savior, Ansible?

No, but seriously. Have you ever given thought to writing automation to configure a new server? It’s ridiculously easy these days. We use it extensively. We can provision an entire clone of our production environment in minutes, if need be, simply by executing some Ansible playbooks to create a new set of Docker swarm hosts with the exact configuration we need to be able to redeploy any application in our topology.

We still have massive community transmission:

Vaccines are starting to wane and I am dubious about how many of those 193 million people are going to get a booster every 6 months. Until that map is mostly blue and yellow I don’t think we can really say we have a handle on it. Regardless of who it is currently doing the dying.

I used Ansible to provision a lot of servers in a cloud environment. Changes had to be done in the maintenance window between midnight and 6 a.m. by the production teams.

We were able to create playbooks that would run quickly and without user input errors for tasks that previously required 30 page plus instruction documents.

I’m a fan. But maybe most appropriate when doing multiple servers.

Oh, it’s definitely ideal for multiple server operations, but being able to stash the server configuration in source control and maintain it means that, on the rare occasion that an upgrade or replacement is warranted, the boss’s job is a lot easier. It’s not as much use to our illustrious host as it is to you or me in a corporate environment, but if it saves him a little bit of effort later on, I’ll be happy I suggested it.

It was very handy in the cases where we had to re-implement virtual machines. That required running any OS updates and all the OS/application updates, patches as well as site specific data.

We just ran all the appropriate playbooks in order. The task took a few hours instead of days.

We’re switching over to a Kubernetes-based infrastructure in 2022, and Ansible playbooks are going to play a prominent role. I’m definitely very pleased with the ability to just “hit the GO button” and in a few minutes, my cluster has the capability to do whatever it is that I built the playbook to do. And we can destroy the cluster and rebuild it in 15 minutes and nobody is the wiser.

The Panhandle Unified Command on Nov. 3 reported that the Southern Panhandle had 73 cases of COVID and last week’s positivity rate was 13.6%. There were 28 active hospitalizations for this district.

The following people who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines are eligible for the booster if they are 65 years and older: age 18+ who live in long-term care residents, age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions, age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings.

Anyone 18 and older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is eligible receive the booster.

COVID has disrupted children’s lives, interrupting school, youth sports, and time with friends and loved ones. Health authorities say vaccinating children is a step toward protecting their health and restoring their lives.

The authorities warn that there’s a lot of misinformation out there, some targeted at parents. They say don’t believe everything you see or read online, and seek answers from credible sources.

Continuing the local newspaper round-up:

Alliance Youth Finds Megalodon Tooth (Alliance, Nebr. Times-Herald, November 10, 2021)

While vacationing off the coast of Florida, Riggins Wehrli, 11, of Alliance, found an item straight from the history books: a megalodon tooth.

Megalodon is an extinct species of mackerel shark that swam through the oceans during the Early Miocene to the Pliocene period, millions of years ago. It is known as one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived.

Michelle Wehrli, Riggins’ mother, explained that the family was vacationing in Florida when they took a ferry to Egmont Key, an island located near St. Petersburg. The family prepared to go into the water, which is when Riggins made the discovery.

“I found it in the first five minutes,” said Riggins. “I dove down and saw what I thought was a rock, but it looked like a tooth. So, I showed my dad, and then he said it was a megalodon shark’s tooth.”

Riggins said his family wanted him to show them where he got the tooth, and he dropped it in the water.

“They were like, ‘No!’ But then I found it right away, because it was like buried,” Riggins said. “They couldn’t believe that I found it.”
