Music and Lyrics by Courtney Barnett

If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight Lyrics:
Stars in the sky, are gonna die, eventually it’s fine.
Just like a lonely satellite, drifting for a little while.
If I don’t hear from you tonight, if I don’t hear from you tonight.

And it’s so quiet outside, with this curfew lullaby.
Is now an okay time to, tell you that I like you?
I wait for your reply, wait for your reply.
If I don’t hear from you tonight, if I don’t hear from you tonight.

And I swear i’ll never mention, this ever again.
But now that I got your attention, I don’t wanna bore the brains outta your head.

All my fears collided, when our mutual friend confided in me that
There’s a ninety-nine percent chance that it’s requited.
I read my bible left to right,
I fantasise I’m by your side.
I lay awake and wonder why,
I pray for rain and angels cry.
If I don’t hear from you tonight, if I don’t hear from you tonight.

Babe I need reminding, I got feelings too.
And I tried my best to hide them, but I don’t wanna hide anything from you.

Stars in the sky, are gonna die, eventually it’s fine.
Yknow that every morning I’m rising with you on my mind.
If loving you’s a crime, then gimme those front page headlines,
across the country and worldwide, singing I won’t give up this time.

If I don’t hear from you tonight,
I know you probably closed your eyes,
And everything will be alright,
If I don’t hear from you tonight,
If I don’t hear from you tonight,
If I don’t hear from you tonight,
If I don’t hear from you tonight.

It’s the 2nd Monday in November, which means it’s Enterprise Quarterly Release time. Thankfully, I pull the 6AM-3PM shift.

I think I might try to restart my attempt at physics, though I will do it on my own rather than go through a college. So I went looking for some recommendations. Here’s one really long list, from basic mechanics through quantum field theory and general relativity, susanjfowler.com. I can skip the calculus book, since I have practiced that twice with my oldest two kids. But I’ll have to squeeze it in with studying machine learning, Spanish, and raising a 16 year old, who is struggling with a subpar physics teacher.

I’m presuming you’re already with The Feynman Lectures on Physics, boxed set: The New Millennium Edition ?

Yep. I have a copy. And while they’re great reading, they’re best at complementing studying a book with problems to work through.

Cool. I’m getting seriously into paleoanthropology myself. My GF gave me a copy of one of the best current text books on the topic - Processes in Human Evolution: The journey from early hominins to Neanderthals and modern humans

Biggest problem I have is that I can’t afford when papers come out in places like Nature. Their pricing sucks for amateurs though there are more and more open-source journals out there. And you have to read the current papers in this field more than some because it’s changing nearly daily.

University libraries often have copies of the important journal, and offer some access to the general public (for a fee).

Yeah, unfortunately I currently live 1+ hours from the nearest real library (though the local public one tries with the limited funding they have). I am looking forward to getting a library card at the University of Memphis once I move there to be with my better half.

In another lifetime, I was spoiled rotten by both my parents working for the University in my hometown (mother was the acquisitions librarian, heaven for a reader ;) ) I would say I’m as well read as many college grads because I damn near lived in that library in Jr & Senior High School.

Is there a nib sticking up that allows you to press the key and have it be recognised? If so, you should be able to find a blank keycap and replace it. If not, then the external keyboard will be your best solution. Is it old enough to be PS/2 or can you use USB?

Yes — there is a nib that allows the “key” to be recognized BUT the keycap doesn’t stay attached. I am able to type by manually pressing the nib.

next question - is it not staying on because the C is damaged or is the bits that hold the key cap in place damaged? If the former, replace it with a key cap that you hardly use (scroll lock is a good one these days). If the latter, alas, it’s external time.

I messed with that for awhile. And eventually went with a separate USB keyboard.

You might also check to see if a replacement keyboard for the laptop can be found secondhand, or on the cheap.

Copy a “c” from some other document, and paste it into whatever word requires it (I once had a similar problem with my e and r keys)

Hate to say it, but then an external is the best way to keep using this one. There are good and reasonably priced keyboards out there though so hopefully you can find something that feels good to your typing and isn’t badly priced. I have a laptop that my son used for a few years and trashed the built-in keyboard. So, I have a nice Sun Type 7 USB keyboard that I use with all my computers - Sun, PC, laptop :) I don’t have to get used to something else when changing machines here at home as a result.

One other option - check ebay for a parts laptop for that model. Perhaps you can swap out a keyboard from a doner machine?

Never really cared for the M keyboard. Noisy and hard to press. OTOH, I know lots of people who hate the VT100 and classic Sun keyboards that are what I prefer. So that’s what matters - find it, plug it in and enjoy it. I’ve been freaking happy typing on the Sun USB keyboard I bought recently.

How ancient? It is usually pretty easy to swap out a keyboard on a lenovo. You can probably find one on eBay. Depending on the rarity of the model you may get fleeced for it, but if it was a common model you can probably get one cheap..

Yep. That’s why I dearly love emulators. I can get 99.999% of the experience without the hassles of dragging, for example, a PDP-11/93 into my house, fixing it’s power supply (which is always trashed) and then paying the enormous number of watts that sucker swallows. But simh running through a good a good terminal emulator? With BSD 2.11 on the simulator? There is nothing different in any real way. I have a Sun 4 emulator running SunOS 4.1.4 that I can keep on a USB stick. 3 ~ 4 gigabytes of storage can salve every moment of nostalgia I have ;)

Yeah, that’s the great thing about geek culture, there’s emulators cropping up for most every OS you can think of, and most are pretty good at playing the old games we knew and loved. The headache sometimes is tracking down the necessary files because the games either no longer exist on physical media or they do but rely upon outdated DRM/drivers.

And of course one problem for both fellas is that, no matter how bad things get this winter, they can’t mandate masks or vaccines because they’ve burned those bridges.

If enough people were vaccinated, things would not be as grim, but we are paying the price for taking education out of schools and replacing it with a combination of day care and limited vocational training.

(Omaha World-Herald, women’s volleyball reporting)

Nebraska leaders ‘disappointed’ by response toward Maryland players who knelt during national anthem (four hours ago)

LINCOLN — Moments before the Maryland-Nebraska match was set to begin Friday night, Rainelle Jones continued her usual practice of taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem.

However, for the first time, the crowd responded to the silent protest from the Terrapins’ senior middle blocker.

Several fans at the Devaney Center yelled at Jones and two of her teammates as they were kneeling before the anthem began. According to Landon Flux, who sang the national anthem, one person in the crowd shouted, “Stand up you piece of trash.” (Flux tweeted out his sympathy to Jones for the incident after the match.)

The moment adversely impacted several Huskers as they were moved to tears. After the match, the Nebraska players met Jones at the net to apologize for the pregame incident.

“For those that know, I kneel for a purpose, not to disrespect,” Jones tweeted after the match. “However, being disrespected by others is what I and many other people battle with daily.”

I suppose that’s the famous “Nebraska nice” I keep hearing about.

So in September, the boss came in one morning and declared that we had to scrub the place top to bottom because she’d heard a rumor that inspections were getting ready to happen and inspectors could be by “any day now.” We spent days cleaning and fixing everything, only for no inspectors to show for the entire months of Sept and Oct.

Then yesterday, she comes in on her day off to declare that not only do we know for sure that inspectors are coming, but they’re gonna be here on Monday and we have to do the whole routine again.

Oh, as a Unix nerd I am very familiar with that messy weird history. One of my favorite emulators is of a Sun 3 running Research Unix Version 9.

Ultimately Unix exists because a couple of programmers enjoyed playing “space wars” on Multics and they found an unused PDP-7 (unused because it was perhaps the worst thing DEC ever made, but I digress… ;) ) to run their game on. That grew into an OS out of necessity. Then the port happened and it became what we think of now.

To me the finest moment remains BSD 4.x but Bell taught many really good lessons too.

Apparently most MAGAts can’t, because they seem to believe it a time-honored tradition that’s been part of the sport since the very beginning. Just like they don’t know that playing the national anthem at sportsball games didn’t become routine until WWII as a gimmick meant to boost morale at home.

Welcome to the party, pal! I’ve seen people go both ways between EE and math. If you’re coming from math to EE, you have to remember that you don’t have to account for EVERYTHING in the problem; there’s a lot of second and third order effects you’re supposed to ignore (because they’re buggers to solve and don’t make any real difference to the solution). Also, for the vector calculus and various transforms you have to learn, the courses spend the time teaching you to calculate using them and much less time teaching the foundations of the math.

Japan has what they call the Imperial Household Law (only men can ascend to the Chrysanthemum Throne). Men may marry anyone, but women must leave the Royal Family if they marry a commoner.

Other princesses have married commoners and left the royal family without any particular public notice; Mako is the first to draw a public outcry.

Former Emperor Akihito married a commoner. Current Emperor Naruhito is also married to a commoner.

Polling shows 85% of the Japanese populace favour allowing Empresses, as a way to shore up the Imperial line. Almost as many agree that an Empress should be able to pass on the throne to her heirs in her own right.

Currently, there are only three heirs to the throne. At the end of WW2, there were sixty-seven royal family members. Today that is seventeen. The government seems bent on allowing the oldest dynasty in the world to die out before allowing women to ascend to the throne. The Emperor or Royal Family cannot do anything about that, as the laws regarding ascension to the throne are set by the Diet, not the family.

The Japanese Royal Family costs the government about three times the money to support the Imperial Household as does the British Royal Family.

However, like the United Kingdom, the Royal Family is seen as an investment in that they draw tourism which helps drive the economy.

Imperial physicians describe the tension the former princess suffers as a form of PTSD, in that the extreme restrictions on her life caused trauma.

The world’s oldest monarchy is running out of royals (Japan Post, in English, October 26, 2021)

It’s really becoming a crisis of sorts. Imperial men can now marry commoners. Mako’s grandmother was the first and caused a big sensation in the 1950s. The current empress also came from a prominent businessman’s family. But, if memory serves, there’s only one male heir right now. And the women who have married into the family have suffered traumatic stress over the pressures society and media places on the family, not to mention the Imperial Household Agency. So, good luck getting anyone to marry the heir to the throne.

You can blame that on the USA.

Imperial Household Law (Wikipedia)

The law was adopted in 1947, replacing the previous law of 1889. The USA forced the law on Japan to bring the Imperial succession in line with the surrender treaty of WW2. The law was drafted by Douglas MacArthur.

The law had the effect of dramatically restricting membership in the Imperial Family to the Emperor Hirohito’s immediate family, his widowed mother, and the families of his three brothers. It abolished the collateral lines of the Imperial Family, the shinnōke and the ōke, which had traditionally been a pool of potential successors to the throne if the main imperial family failed to produce an heir. The fifty-one members of the eleven cadet branches renounced their Imperial status; and they were formally removed from the Imperial household register and became ordinary citizens on October 14, 1947.

“Deconstructing faith”.

Had to read up on the concept.

Hell, that’s part of growing up.

I shed my catholic upbringing by the time I was 15 and never looked back.

Campus Crusaders for Christ really put me off any further interest.

In the mean time, I have met some Christians who impress me by quietly living their faith and not preaching or even advertising it. Not enough to convert me but enough to show me that there is (or can be) a positive side to the faith.

I still consider myself Christian in the broadest possible sense; in that I believe in do unto others, etc., and believe that (almost) anyone can be redeemed if they really strive to be. And in the notion that the truly great and enduring kingdoms are not man-made earthly ones, but those of nature and of the spirit.

if you leverage unrealized capital gains as loan collateral and use the loan proceeds to live on, those loan proceeds are taxed as ordinary income

it’s simple. it’s called sourcing the funds.

He seems to think we all give a shit if Tesla stock loses 5% or not. I don’t, and I encourage Musk to sell as much stock as possible so it’s easier for other Tesla shareholders to toss this toxic lunatic out on his ass and not destroy the company. A staunch anti-vaxxer and his wife are dead from covid. His daughter, a prominent sports reporter, nearly died from Covid last year and has been a strong advocate for vaccination. She couldn’t break through the rightwing echo chamber her MAGA dad inhabited, unfortunately. How stupid do you have to be to watch your daughter nearly die and still refuse to listen? sorryantivaxxer.com

The dead parents abandoned four children as orphans, two of whom are under eighteen.

I suspect the oldest child who survived Covid-19 before there was a vaccine and tried to convince her parents to get it is now going to have to raise her siblings herself whilst burying both her parents and settling the hospital bills.

Her latest blog post is entitled “Covid-19 Injections - A Gateway to Transhumanism”

Her “practice” is in McDonough, Georgia.

Snake oil in the age of anti-science, anti-modern medicine. The thinking that goes into rejecting everything 99% of the professionals and experts say is all wrong and the correct answers come from (at best) folk medicine and the truly bizarre mythology of “liquid computers”. Wut? Liquid computers? Made up on the spot BS. That’s more believable than say the results in past months from vaccination?

re: #152 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

The dead parents abandoned three children as orphans, two of whom are under eighteen.

I suspect the oldest child who survived Covid-19 before there was a vaccine and tried to convince her parents to get it is now going to have to raise her siblings herself whilst burying both her parents and settling the hospital bills.

I have to confess that my anxiety level has been rising over the past few weeks and I attribute that to an unfortunate duo: the persistence of the pandemic and the change in weather. For those of us more cautious (perhaps excessively so?) and living in more northern climes, it’s no longer going to be possible to dine out with friends or really visit with them in person. Too many had hoped that vaccines would end this and we could return to normal but thanks to the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, we may be facing another winter of surges. It really hit home when a friend cancelled our weekly walk because, as she admits, she is a “wimp” about walking outside in the cold. It’s easier on her, with her husband there; the pandemic tends to be harder on those of us living alone.

Of course, there is another reason that so many seem in a foul mood these days: here we thought the November 3 election would bring at least a temporary halt to the widespread political dissension in our nation but instead it just inflamed the discord, with our entire country immersed in anger and hostility on steroids. We all want to go back to a time when our focus is on family and friends, without having to spend so much energy on anger and outrages.

And her degree (if she even has one) is from a fucking diploma mill I’m sure.

She is licensed as a physician in Georgia. She is a doctor of osteopathic medicine. I don’t know about Georgia but a significant number of doctors in Arizona are osteopaths, including my gastro doc. They’re not usually kooks. But as we learned over the past 20 months, there are a lot of kooks with MD, DO and PhD after their names.

My niece just became a doctor in Germany. She told a doctor joke to my brother in Chicago, but it lost something in translation, I think. My brother said ‘orthopedist’ when it would have made much more sense with ‘osteopath’.

Yeah, we have a Naturopathic “doctor” with an office next to the grocery store I have shopped at since I moved here. All perfectly legal and above board. No vaccines available but you can buy holistic health supplements there. I don’t know how she’s stayed in business for almost 3 yrs, there’s never anyone in the waiting room or going in and out, you can see through the big windows out front.

It appears that in Arizona, naturopaths are the ones who are certifying medical marijuana patients. This can be quite lucrative. That said, you really do need a lot of paperwork to get a naturopath to sign off.

AIUI (as I understand it) osteopaths have much more medical education than naturopaths.

In Arizona, the only difference between an osteopath and an MD is that osteopaths have a couple of additional courses they have to take. They have to get the same licensing as MDs. I’d also note that Arizona only had one MD school (University of Arizona) up until quite recently, but had two schools of osteopathy. That’s changed; I think there are a total of five medical schools in AZ now, or about to be (ASU and Mayo Clinic are opening medical schools).

Naturopaths are quite a different beast. There’s a school of naturopathy over in Tempe.

There’s reason to believe that anybody wearing a mask labelled “antifa” is, in fact, not antifa. They don’t do branded merch. The whole point of their generic outfits is that anybody can pick up the pieces anywhere; a ski mask from the sporting goods store, black shirts and sweatshirts and pants from anyplace that sells shirts and sweatshirts and pants, etc.

I have had to do this at another hobby-related site where I’ve been a member for years. It had to do with Rittenhouse. There was a discussion where a consensus was reached that he’s not guilty under Wisconsin law. I so want this not to be true—even though there were good arguments of why it’s likely—that I kind of lashed out and then had to apologize. It felt bad. I could easily go back, but I know I’ll likely get triggered on that specific topic again and so for the good of all have decided to take a break. And on that note, off to the office for some quiet Sunday PM work.

re: #176 Charles Johnson

So. Teleskiguy ranted a bunch more on Twitter, and now apparently is wishing death on people at LGF. And Joe Bacon canceled his LGF subscription without a word and probably won’t be back.

This is really shitty behavior. I don’t know what’s driving it but I know he’s hurting people who don’t deserve it - including me.

I’m thinking about next steps.

I was lurking last night when all this shit dropped. I basically sighed, noped out and moved on to more pressing business (finishing up The Last of Us 2; you know, God’s work.)

Sorry to see all of this happening. Both participants seem like decent people overall and like all social spaces, you’re going to butt heads with people from time-to-time. I’ve had a couple here myself. I’m hoping things can resolve without permanent flounces and/or bans.

For what’s is worth, this site has helped me keep my sanity and perspective on things over the last ten (!) or so years I’ve been chatting here. I appreciate you letting me hang around, particularly with what little I typically bring to the table.

Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s greatly appreciated.

re: #204 IngisKahn

In all my years here, there have been a few commenters where I’ve downdinged just about every post (mostly before all the anti-choice and anti-science people left). I never once felt like flouncing or demanding that they not post here. It’s much healthier to have a discussion. If things get too crazy, just take a break, NBD.

Additionally, I’m pretty sure that we all have experience with posters who just rub us the wrong way, whose quirky rhetorical tics make you want to pull out what’s left of your hair and scream into the void, and yet, you find yourself updinging their posts when you think they’ve made a damned good point or said something particularly funny.

And then there are others whom you generally like, but they frequently drive you crazy, but you realize that part of the behaviors that drive you mad are largely the results of significant traumatic experiences they experienced years, even decades, earlier and the scars they carry from those experiences, so you try extra-hard to be understanding and refrain from going for the jugular in an online argument.

I’ve been very online since 2000’s, mostly for professional forums. Some I stayed a few years and moved on. Some of us moved to other forums. I’m close to leaving Facebook but all my professional peers are there and forums for various tech groups. Basically, tech support goes this way:

1. Stuff not working, check manual/Read Me files
2. Check online tech support portal
3. Call tech support: while on hold, go to Facebook forums and find issue
4. If not found, still on hold, go to LGF and post memes

LFG is the longest tenured place for politics I’ve stayed. No plans to leave, even though sometimes I’m not here as much. It’s about as stable and safe a port from the storm as one can find. But it’s a big family and sometimes not all get along. I like both dudes, they clashed, one went pretty far and created more discord. I can empathize with where he’s at but at the same time ack the toxicity he created and empathize with his targets.

For many, this site is an island of reason and sanctuary from the stupidity ravaging this country and the world. It’s helped many of us to maintain our sanity.

From that perspective, gloom and doom comments could be disturbing. But so would plugging our ears and yelling “nah, nah, I can’t hear you” in response to reality.

I can understand the frustration with this country’s issues (why aren’t the former guy and his cronies in jail, how can we return to normal if people don’t get vaxxed, etc) and the cynicism that results.

But you can’t hide from reality and I believe it’s helpful to have reality based discussions, even if it’s uncomfortable. Discussion can help motivate actions in response to the bullshit spewed by the right wing and their odious actions.

So while I can be cynical about the state of the world, I will remain engaged and work to make things better.

Or I could just go to sites with puppies and kittens being cute.

This is so infuriating.

(CNN)Isabella “Izzy” Tichenor, a 10-year-old Black and autistic student in Utah, died by suicide last Saturday after allegedly being bullied by classmates and her family’s complaints were ignored, the family’s lawyer tells CNN.

The tragedy comes just weeks after the Justice Department publicly detailed a disturbing pattern where Black and Asian American students at the Davis School District in Farmington, Utah, were harassed for years, and officials deliberately ignored complaints from parents and students. The DOJ detailed the pattern in a report and settlement agreement released in October. The agency had been investigating the school district since July 2019.

“Izzy was a happy child. She was a happy little girl, she did well in school … All she wanted was to be connected with family and friends,” attorney Tyler Ayres tells CNN ahead of the private funeral planned for Saturday morning.

Please note this girl killed herself mere days after the Davis School District and the Department of Justice came to a settlement over harassment in the district.

cnn.com

I hated school because I got bullied—it’s only as an older adult that I realize how much I got bullied. My heart is breaking that a little girl was being bullied so much she thought death would be better. I want to slug people but I know I can’t.

I got picked on occasionally in elementary school and high school. Nowhere near what other people have gone through, but enough to empathize with the victims. To this day, I still tense up when someone is getting bullied in a tv show or movie.

It’s also why I get angry with the whole “Just ignore them” or “Just get over it” advice people often dispense in these situations. Because 99.9% of the time, the people dealing out those bullshit platitudes either have never had to deal with bullying, or did it themselves at some point.

This place is not toxic. Personalities have conflict and sometimes they go too far and become toxic interactions. Our friend went there last night.

I’ve typed some things I regret and I’m thankfully still here. So I’m going to stress cook after doing some design work this morning.

I’ve been making lots of salads for the last year. Lately I’ve been using raw vegetables but will cook one or two a tad to give it complexity. I tried lightly roasting small Yukon Gold potatos just until soft and starchy, cooled, and sliced. Last night I threw some asparagus stalks under the broiler just until they made cooking sounds and smells, then right into the freezer to cool. That was tasty. And my pee smells amazing today!

I get the bigger picture with him, so I scroll the stuff I don’t like and that’s that. There are a couple of folks that changed over the years for the better too. Have to disagree. My husband was a III. He didn’t do it, and he used it to differentiate between himself and his father, who went as Jr. It had just become part of him, without thinking about it.

On the other hand, my father was a Jr, with a pretty uncomfortable name. When my brother was born, and my father’s father started putting pressure on for a III, pop said ABsolutely NOT.

Ashkenazi Jews NEVER use a Jr or III. In fact, we never name a child after a living person.

The superstition is that someday, the Angel of Death will see this name on his day’s assignment list. If he’s in a mood that day, he might take IV instead of III, just to be a dick. Then he’ll have to swing back around for III, so now you’ve lost them both.

Also… unlikely, but someone has to win the lottery… if your child has the name of an already dead person, the Angel of Death might see that name on the list and say “oh, no, already got him, must be a mistake” and skips that pickup. It could take years before he realizes his error and comes back around.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to imply that kids were included in that - I know they don’t choose their own names. I’m talking more about people who use them when they don’t have to, for example: “George J. Terwilliger III”

To change the subject on purpose, anyone have any good cold/flu home remedies to share? We’ve got NyQuil, Pepto and all that sort of stuff, but hubby is nauseous and can’t eat, plus having a torn up tummy. I made a pot of chicken and rice soup two days ago,but it’s gone, looks like I have to make another one. The BRAT diet is helpful, is there anything else that works?

Yeah, we have a Naturopathic “doctor” with an office next to the grocery store I have shopped at since I moved here. All perfectly legal and above board. No vaccines available but you can buy holistic health supplements there. I don’t know how she’s stayed in business for almost 3 yrs, there’s never anyone in the waiting room or going in and out, you can see through the big windows out front.

it’s a front for an accountant with really good gun skills.

I think Teleskiguy took it really hard when he got laid out by a number of people in a thread a while ago. I felt kind of bad because I don’t think he’d meant to get as far over his skis as he wound up doing. Sometimes people get wounded by stuff like that and just don’t really know how to recover. I’ve had a couple of moments on LGF where I got hammered for a comment and of course it can be a little hurtful because one typically isn’t aware that something crossed a line, and suddenly there’s a bunch of red on a comment. If one doesn’t have a lot of online experience in discussion forums, I could see how someone might not recover from a taste of that.

re: #245 Mattand

I got picked on occasionally in elementary school and high school. Nowhere near what other people have gone through, but enough to empathize with the victims. To this day, I still tense up when someone is getting bullied in a tv show or movie.

It’s also why I get angry with the whole “Just ignore them” or “Just get over it” advice people often dispense in these situations. Because 99.9% of the time, the people dealing out those bullshit platitudes either have never had to deal with bullying, or did it themselves at some point.

my problem in elementary school was parents who insisted “don’t fight back” because they had no goddamned experience getting bullied. I finally had to smack the crap out of the 300 lb. fourth grade gal who kept getting up in my shit, and after that, I got some peace. I never got my revenge on the two other kids who made my life hell in elementary school, but they both died really young, so I guess someone was evening the score for me.

My dad always told me, “Don’t ever start a fight, but you won’t get in trouble if you finish one.” However, I was lucky enough never to be physically picked on; my bullies were perfectly content to upset me with words and not injure me. I did get in a couple of “fights” - put in quotes because it was basically them swinging at me and me dodging until a teacher finally noticed and put a stop to it.
