Basically true. There was one teller and one customer. The customer wanted to get $1000 cash, but was very exacting in the denominations. Then he had to have the bills all facing the same way: “I’m kind of OCD like that; really, like my dad, though my mom had it a bit…..” About 10 minutes later* and then another teller finally appeared to help me as we learned about OCD guy’s family history.

*Possibly somewhat shorter than 10 minutes. In fact, it was probably more like 2 minutes, but I’m an asshole in my own way about these things.

I face bills automatically. Cashiers at work don’t need to, but managers at the end of the day do.

My husband spells it CDO. You know, alphabetical order. I used to think it was a joke.

But you didn’t do it at the teller’s window with no one else around except a guy wanting to check his cash, I’ll bet.

QAnon leader touts death as a necessary step in their evolution towards enlightenment:

While the group initially appeared to be waiting for the reappearance of JFK, over the weekend, the tone of Protzman’s comments shifted dramatically. Besides proclaiming that he was God’s representative on earth, he also took part in a video chat where participants openly spoke about having to experience death in order to learn the truth.

“Ultimately… we have to experience that physical death… let go… come out on the other side,” one of the participants in the video call suggested.

I was wondering if anyone remembered anything about smallpox outbreaks in the US before the vaccine and how it was handled.

I know nothing about pre-vaccine… but here’s a good story about a 1947 outbreak when the vaccine was first mass-produced and mass-distributed:

en.wikipedia.org

The 1947 New York City smallpox outbreak occurred in March 1947 and was declared ended on April 24, 1947. The outbreak marked two milestones for America. First, it was the largest mass vaccination effort ever conducted for smallpox in America, and second, it marked the last outbreak of smallpox in America. Within three weeks of the discovery of the outbreak, the U.S. Public Health Service, in conjunction with New York City health officials, had procured the smallpox vaccine and inoculated over 6,350,000 adults and children. Of that number, 5,000,000 had been vaccinated within the first two weeks. The rapid response was credited with limiting the outbreak to 12 people, 10 of whom recovered, while 2 died.

Anthony Fauci was a little boy in NYC at the time, and the episode had a profound effect on the course of his life. His choice of career, for instance.

Variolation goes back to the beginning of the 18th century, and the procedure is similar to vaccination, so there isn’t really a US before any effective “treatment.” During outbreaks the usual procedure was quarantine and widespread inoculation.

If someone who enters high office screws over his or her constituents like that knowing full-well there’s a nice likely payday the day after, that payday should somehow be nuked from orbit as soon as possible. There needs to be some way of making it clear that such behavior will have consequences the day after, make them so toxic so as to discourage others from trying it down the line and prevent it from happening again.

Immersion blenders are my friend. I had a run in trying to make apple ginger soup years back with a regular blender and the hot soup went everywhere despite my best efforts to contain. After getting an immersion blender, have never had that particular problem and all manner of soups benefit from puree. I also use the immersion blender to make all kinds of pestos too.

There is the advice for the reader: “If you or someone you know is addicted to marijuana, call Domino’s at [no phone numbers allowed], rent a tape and enjoy!”

How did you escape?!??
“He turned to plug it in and we made it out the door.”

It does read like a 1920’s marihuana scare movie translated into 1970s ad typography.

Good piece on Asimov and the latest Foundation:

“…The reason Asimov remains so well-known today is not because his books are so great — they are, but plenty of great books don’t get blockbuster TV treatment 80 years after publication. Like passengers on a sub-FTL starship, the Foundation stories spend most of their time in cold sleep, awakened every 20 years or so when a superfan with influence finds a reason to revive them — and for most of the past century, the ideas have remained current. Apple’s TV adaptation is an attempt to modify Asimov’s universe for a world in which Foundation’s themes have lost their intellectual hegemony (see The Atlantic piece for more detail). The show’s execution is ultimately very disappointing, but if there is any justice in the world, it will re-up Foundation for another twenty years or so of public life, by which time someone else will come along with a better update.

Cheers, nerds.”

Local news update.

The dozens of looters who rushed Walnut Creek’s Nordstrom on Saturday night made off with between $100,000 ad $200,000 worth of merchandise, Walnut Creek police said Monday.

Lt. Hollie Connors said up to 80 masked bandits blocked the street up and down Broadway Plaza with up to 25 vehicles that had license plates covered from possible identification. Though the city began placing officers inside Nordstrom earlier this year after similar smash-and-grab robberies, no officers were on site just before 9 p.m. Saturday when the coordinated attack took place.

re: #29 Belafon

I was wondering if anyone remembered anything about smallpox outbreaks in the US before the vaccine and how it was handled.

There was not much that could be done. During the famous 1775-1782 epidemic the two options were quarantine or inoculation. Sometimes individuals who were ‘busted’ with recognized infections were sent to a remote or designated area. And in some cases entire villages were quarantined.

The other option was inoculation. Which was even more controversial. Although George Washington, a smallpox survivor, required the Continental Army to get inoculated.

During the Smallpox outbreak of 1775-1782 at least 130,000 Americans out of 2.4 million died. And thousands more Native Americans as well. And waves of the epidemic spread throughout the North American Continent, Mexico and Alaska, with some occurring into the 19th Century.

Among the reasons the United States invasion of Canada in 1775 failed was a major smallpox epidemic in the invading American Army.

Hmm… I wonder if there might be videos of cars. license plates, people involved, the merchandise stolen. Plus the several that were busted right then.

Crimes relying on anonymity are becoming more and more difficult to successfully carry out these days. As is claiming a sasquatch sighting.

re: #44 Charles Johnson

Rod Serling voice:

Imagine, if you will, a world of two soups.

The first is one in which a carrot/ginger soup in a vegetable stock is served in a bowl in which the carrots and ginger are all 1/2” cubes.

The second is one in which, after cooking, the soup was put into a food processor and pureed.

One is inedible (#1!). The second is fan-fucking-tastic!

So by and large, I’m a pureed soup guy when the ingredients include stuff that needs to be atomized to mix, rather than overpower, the other ingredients. So, ginger/carrot soup, pureed. Vegetable beef, non-pureed.

I think this is an absolutely perfect argument.

And I’m going to go ahead and proclaim myself winning the Interwebs today based on this perfect post. Yay, me!
