Fortunately, antivaxx propaganda is killing them off at the rate of a thousand or more a day. If we were doing anything to cause this, we would stand trial in the Hague. As it is, though, their own leaders like Carlson, Hannity, and Flynn are doing it to them and those leaders are the ones who should stand trial.

Over and over I see liberals applying the same logical standards to Trump that they do to other liberals, and it just misses the point. Trump told us: he can say or do anything and not lose a single voter.

Plus, they probably got a thrill seeing him embarrass a black woman, never mind that she’s ostensibly on their side.

news media currently going insane, thinking it’s a hung jury. hey, media, if the jury were hung, they wouldn’t be telling the judge there’s an outcome. they’d be telling the judge they can’t come to a decision and the judge would indicate that the jury was hung.

about Nancy’s brooch/pin
Behind Nancy Pelosi’s Power Brooch Is an 86-Year-Old Texan Jeweler

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech last week, she set off an avalanche of vitriol (from Trumps fans) and celebration (from her liberal base). But little did she know that she also helped an 86-year-old Texas doyenne of the D.C. scene sell a big pile of jewelry.

As Pelosi ripped up Trump’s speech, some keen observers noticed a small detail in the made-for-TV moment: a formidable-looking, stiletto-shaped gold pin on her left lapel. The brooch is a miniature of the speaker’s mace, the official symbol of the House of Representatives, a ceremonial version of which stands on a pedestal to the speaker’s right when the House is in session.

The pin was made by a Texan—jewelry maker Ann Hand, the wife of LBJ confidant and Democratic party éminence grise Lloyd Hand, who came to Washington, D.C., in the sixties, one of the last of the contingent of LBJ-era Texans still in D.C.

Even if that were a caduceus…

I don’t think Nancy Pelosi has ever hid the fact that she supports common sense measures to prevent Americans from killing Americans, ranging from vaccination to gun control.

Maybe the Republicans like to see Americans killing their fellow Americans…

re: #343 Jay C

Not hard to figure out: maybe more cases in pure numbers, but with a high-enough rate of vaccination, they aren’t going to be as severe or fatal.
Except among the unvaxxed, of course …

I think that would account for increased case (and positive test) rate with steady, not decreasing hospitalization and death rates. Or omicron really is less dangerous — I’ve seen as many suggestions that it’s worse as that it’s not as bad.

Very true. I was thinking the same thing as you.

I guess that we will see whether the view was a literary tool or a statement of intent.

Personally, I think that Alaska would not be on my list of ideal locations. I grew up in Pittsburgh. The cold, damp, and dark of winter are not to my liking. In Pittsburgh enhanced by the high hills that block the sun for several additional hours in the winter.

re: #173 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I’m stuck on Tracfone’s site trying to noodle out what I should replace my flip phone with.

Tracfone says support for 3G is going to drop dead in February so I have to replace it.

There are other flip phones available, along with a bunch of smart phones.

The smart phones confuse the crap out of me from their descriptions (Samsung, Apple, &c).

Neither my wife nor I can figure out what to do with the smartphones on offer, so I’m guessing flip phone (plus we almost never use it).

Presumably we can buy a different phone later from them.

You’re on LGF, probably the best tech support you’re going to find. Ask us how to do something.

Yeah, 3G has been delayed from retirement twice now and there won’t be a third year of postponement.

If you like flip phones look at Nokia. They’re probably the most reliable manufacturer out there. I always had good luck with their phones. They have a 4G LTE model through Verizon - the Nokia 2720V - less than 200 bucks on Amazon if you just want to keep your current contract and get the new device.

This is apparent even within the Bay Area. When we had loosened masking requirements in Alameda County a few months back, those areas closer to the bay in Alameda County had 90% indoor masking, whereas once I had gone 10 miles to the east inland (e.g. Pleasanton), it had dropped to about 50% masking.

Is that true everywhere? For information divulged during marriage, does the divorce render the privilege void? i.e. something told in confidence during marriage can now be publicly disclosed when the marriage is over?

From what I understand (hint, grain of salt here) all marital privilege does is protect the spouse from contempt and or obstruction charges if (s)he refuses to testify against her/his spouse or if they refuse to answer questions during an investigation. There is nothing that prevents a spouse from voluntarily choosing to testify. Not even one of tRumps infamous NDA’s.

Saw my pulmonologist today. Asked if she deals with COVID-19 patients and turns out she’s on the critical care team at the hospital. She said the staff members often joke about which stage of grief they are feeling emotionally that day.

Said she personally gets stuck at anger.

When asked, she also confirmed dealing with people demanding ivermectin and hydroxycloroquine and being abusive to staff.

Whenever I hear someone encourage *others* to drop out and saying ‘education is over-rated’. What I hear is a subtext implying that education would only confuse serfs and cannonfodder from proper servility to the ‘important people’.

This has been a theme in wingnut circles for at least a couple of decades. And the recommendation has always been that *others* should be the ones to drop out. Not the speaker.

This is true not just in wingnut circles, but in _all_ circles, which try to control your mind, regardless of religious or political orientation. The less educated you are, the less you can question what they have to say.

- Cawthorn, et al, don’t mind people going to college just to be an engineer or a doctor.
1) You _have_ to have a reality based world view to succeed in those areas, at least to a certain extent.
2) You _can_ craft a curriculum that skews the morality of people becoming engineers or doctors, either by leaving out the “liberal arts” parts of the education, or having a non-STEM part of the education that is heavily skewed.

As far as the law is concerned, there are already plenty of right-wing/evangelical laws schools (Patrick Henry?).

- The Jehovah’s Witnesses have long told their membership not to get a college education, because college is “confusing”, according to some of their propaganda.

- In Hong Kong, the pro-Beijing government replaced a mandatory high school class on liberal studies, with one that includes less liberal studies and more “patriotic education”, and specifically calling out “discussion of news” as a topic to be avoided in classes.

IMO, it’s not fair to expect service employees making $9-$14/hr to enforce mask policies. Getting screamed at, spit on/physically abused for trying to make a customer put on a mask should not be expected of them.

Any educated guesses as to when their nomination hearings will be held and, then, how long after that to get rid of DeJoy? I admit I’m impatient but would like an idea of a realistic time frame.

In the 1990’s and early 2000’s I met in my social circles a number of Former Soviet Union ladies who had come to the US by marrying some US citizen, then after a while in the US, divorced him.

The ones I encountered socially who did not have professional skills, were very unhappy about life in general. I guessed that many of their issues predated their move to the US. It seemed to me that it would take a lot to make someone leave their home and ‘hood to a far off and very strange land with a strange culture and strange language.

I know that was probably in jest, but that’s pretty unlikely, given they’ve only been married for 8 months.

If you apply for a green card through marriage to a US citizen, it will take at least 8 months to come through.

If you get a green card through marriage to a US Citizen, if you haven’t been married for at least 2 or 3 years, you get a _conditional_ Green Card that can be revoked if you’ve get divorced within a certain time period.

New Jersey is enshrining marriage equality into state law as a means to fend off any threat from the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court.

Same-sex couples in New Jersey have had the right to marry since 2013, due to a ruling from state courts, and then the U.S. Supreme Court took marriage equality nationwide with its 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. But LGBTQ+ activists and allies in the state have noted that abortion rights may be in danger due to a case recently heard by the nation’s highest court, and they fear marriage equality could be imperiled next.

“We fought to correct the injustice that denied these rights for too many loving couples for far too long,” New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg said, according to nj.com. “We don’t want to see those rights lost to an archconservative agenda of recent Supreme Court appointees.”

We need a brig on airplanes. No room, you say? Of course there is. Enclose a 7 by 3 foot section of the cargo compartment, put a door on one end so it can be loaded with luggage in the normal way, and a hatch on top. When some entitled wretch gets obnoxious, tape them up, open the hatch, transfer the luggage to their seat, and drop them in it till the next stop. Also tell them it will depressurize if they try to open the door or the hatch. It won’t of course but the average asshole MAGAt is orders of magnitude too stupid to know that.

The Seinfeld writer who gave the world Festivus reveals the origins of the holiday—invented by his father, not Frank Costanza, and featuring clocks and wailing children rather than the famous pole—which are pretty dark indeed.

Dan O’Keefe, who also worked on iconic shows such as Silicon Valley and Veep, joined The Daily Beast’s Fever Dreams podcast to talk about satire in the post-Trump age. But first, he gave hosts Will Sommer and Asawin Suebsaeng a surrealist tour through how Festivus came to be.

“I mean this in the nicest way possible: My father was an undiagnosed bipolar, severe alcoholic who nonetheless was extremely high-functioning and held down a job as an editor at the Reader’s Digest and had an advanced degree and was extremely erudite,” O’Keefe explains, noting he “came from an extremely working-class background, which he was constantly trying to make sure no one knew about—and in so doing, he reminded everyone of it constantly. I think the phrase is, ‘came up from nothing and brought it with him.’” O’Keefe’s father invented the holiday: “At one point he said it was an anniversary for his first date with my mom, but he also said a lot of crazy shit… so who knows?

Illinois state Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, was robbed of her vehicle in suburban Chicago on Tuesday night and Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., was carjacked the following day on Wednesday afternoon in South Philadelphia, according to news reports in those cities.

Lightford was reportedly with her husband when three masked suspects hijacked her family’s Mercedes. Police say shots were fired during the incident, but Lightford and her husband were unharmed.

woot!

(CBS News/CBS Newspath) - A potential vaccine that would prevent the most deadly and aggressive type of breast cancer — triple-negative breast cancer — is undergoing testing.

The key protein for the vaccine, which would be a “holy grail” of cancer treatment, was found through “a matter of luck and tenacity in going through databases and looking for proteins,” Dr. Vincent Tuohy said, almost like finding a needle in a haystack.

The vaccine works by jumpstarting the immune system and attacking any tumors that contain a specific protein that should not be present unless a woman is lactating.

“Once we’ve established that we can produce an immune response, we want to rapidly move it earlier to the disease process again, to the prevention setting where we think it will have an even greater impact,” Dr. Thomas Budd said.

Tuohy and Budd are leading a trial still in its early stages. If successful, the vaccine would be given to young healthy women at higher risk for breast cancer, which is known as a triple-negative.

Now we learn of a similar case in Finland where Tuomas Katainen, a 2013 Tesla Model S owner, had a battery pack that was out of warranty fail, and Tesla asked for the equivalent of $22,000 USD for a battery pack replacement.

Katainen didn’t like the value proposition considering used 2013 Model S vehicles go for about 35,000 euros in Finland and he didn’t have access to a third-party shop to fix the pack.

What options does one have at that point? Quite a few actually: You can try to find a used battery pack, you can sell the car as non-functional and still get decent money for it, or you can sell it for parts.

But Katainen decided to go a different way.

He reached out to YouTuber Pommijätkät, a channel known for blowing things up, to strap 30 kg of dynamite to the electric vehicle and blow it up:

Oh, baby…

JUST IN: Nirvana’s surviving members and Courtney Love have responded to Spencer Elden’s #Nevermind lawsuit. In a motion to dismiss the case, they argue, “Elden has spent three decades profiting from his celebrity as the self-anointed ‘Nirvana Baby’… He has reenacted the photograph in exchange for a fee, many times; he has had the album title ‘Nevermind’ tattooed across his chest; he has appeared on a talk show wearing a self-parodying, nude-colored onesie; he has autographed copies of the album cover for sale on eBay; and he has used the connection to try to pick up women.”

The deluxe version of Live at Leeds, which features most of Tommy live, leads (pun not intended) off with a monster version of another obscure song “Heaven and Hell”.

The album is in constant rotation on my computing devices.

I used to listen to “Live at Leeds” with crappy plastic headphones in my high school library on a creaky old turntable. But I don’t think I’ve heard “Heaven and Hell.” I learned about “So Sad About Us” from my friend’s band doing a great cover, then found the original.

Seven day forecast is full of rain. Or at least a chance of rain.

Unusual for us down here in the corner of the country.

Usually the train of storms happens later in winter, not at the beginning of winter.

But I’m not complaining. As long as I don’t have to go outside, the strong westerly winds keeps the temps from getting too low.

And the loquats are very happy.

Orbital dynamics. They need Guiana Space Centre to launch it at the correct declination to get it out to L2 where it needs to be. SpaceX would need their heavy launch booster to be ready and I don’t think it is.

A Mom Anon  Dec 23, 2021 • 4:57:03pm

Against my better judgement I ended up going to Kroger today. After lunch. Holy shit muffins. Hardly any masking at all. Full parking lot. I ended up running over a lady’s foot with my cart, fortunately I chose a small cart because I only needed a few things. She was wearing boots, thank goodness. I apologized and then tried to keep the hell away from her, lol. I can’t even imagine what the local Walmart is like right now- nope, don’t wanna.

So Christmas dinner this year will be what I was going to make for Thanksgiving but couldn’t because I was pretty sick. I tried the same meal again on Dec 12, and I ended up having to tell my son over the phone how to finish the turkey while his dad and I were at the hospital. My kid and Cleo ate that turkey over the next 4 days. Sooo, today I got a 5 lb turkey breast and I am having another go at it for Christmas. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, the dreaded green bean casserole(husband loves it, so I make a tiny batch for him, ack), salad and maybe rolls. Dessert is still up in the air, not sure. I have the stuff for pumpkin pie, or maybe a cake of some kind. I kind of wanted to change course because of ,well, not so great luck with this particular meal. But,The Husband wants it, so I am making the healthiest turkey dinner I can manage and still keep it tasty and traditional.

I hope you all are well, safe, happy and have enjoyable times with love and laughter over the rest of the winter holidays. If it’s tough, my heart is with you. And hugs too. I really hope more than anything for peace, stability and much more sanity in 2022. I would just like to not have this OHFUCKWHATNOW???!!! feeling so often, ya know? ❤️🦎

Here at the Pie House we have considered the weighty question of what to do about the Chinese food when Nittel Nacht (Christmas Eve) falls out on a Friday night (Sabbath). Do the traditional Sabbath foods (gefilte fish, challah, chicken soup) override the newer traditional Chinese foods or is one allowed to substitute egg roll, wonton, in place of the gefilte fish & chicken soup?

Yeah, there’s a whole string of posts about the AI facial recognition business he somehow got involved with, and that company does big business with a ton of law enforcement, including the NYPD.

Mind you, critics have noted that this kind of software is notorious for not being able to identify persons of color accurately (which I argue is entirely the point) - it’s an excuse to target persons of color. It’s working as designed.

Hope the turkey turns out well this time, and you get the relaxing Christmas Day that you need. Will keep my fingers crossed for the stability and sanity, you’re more than due for a goodly share.

With my hubby it’s green beans cooked with new potatoes for his comfort food, rather than casserole. If I outlive him, there are a few things I will probably never cook again — the green beans & potato combo; ham and pintos; and black-eyed peas. Too many memories attached to that old ex-Texan.
