Just got home from visiting my spouse’s family. Her mom is 87 and her brother is in very poor health, so we try to visit when possible, although it means 4+ hours in the car.

But we also got to see her son and the grandkids and had a great dinner socializing with family.

Everyone was vaxxed and boosted but being unmasked around other people was uncomfortable. But playing with the grandkids made it worthwhile.

Not seeing my kids and grandkids until the 30th, so that all of us can verify we are okay before getting together.

My son-in-laws Christmas tree in the living room is 16 feet tall. Got it after building the house. First year decorating was fun. This year he mentioned it’s scary up on the ladder decorating. He sighed “What was I thinking”.

Early on in the pandemic, two workers in the London underground were spat on by some disgruntled man who claimed he had Covid-19 then vanished; both women became ill and one died. That charge is reasonable, but certainly assault with a deadly weapon.

Thank Gawd they included traditional Middle East tropes like the Tannenbaum, the Holly and the Ivy, Yule logs, and the Winter King into their celebrations!

Oh, wait. The Winter king got shuffled off to Baltimore pretty damn quick, didn’t he?

Midnight in Austin.

Home from late service (well-masked of course), kicked back and enjoying the Christmas tree for a few more minutes before I wander off to bed with my wine glass.

For all of the Lizards:
Blessed Christmas to those who celebrate.
A nice, relaxing day for those who can get one.
Sympathy for those who have to work and didn’t want to.
Heartfelt thanks to the medical folks among us and connected to us.
May all of us survive and find some peace and some well-deserved joy in the coming year, especially those who have been on short commons in that respect.

Have I mentioned I really appreciate this grand little corner of the intertubes? Come for the politics and the pun threads, stay for the pets and the pie pics. And the friends you’ll never meet, but get to enjoy anyway.

Despite Gov. Abbott’s lies, experts say Texas grid is not prepared for winter

Abbott’s “guarantee” that “the lights will stay on” conflicts with the little effort we’ve seen by him and Republican legislators to winterize Texas’ energy grid.
Had there been regulations in place to enforce weatherization recommendations, last winter’s disaster may not have hit so hard.
A number of reports from energy experts show the Texas grid is not prepared for winter.
Abbott is risking the lives of hundreds of more Texans for the sake of wiping his hands of a problem.

I need to get started on solarizing my house at least. In the meantime I have a good diesel generator and a couple of dual fuel portables, along with various propane appliances and a big tank.

Apparently yes, but not much. They’ll run out of fuel eventually, but the lifetime is determined by the helium coolant supply running out (5 to 10 years).

There isn’t a vehicle to carry hoomans and fuel to L2. There won’t be any in 10 years, none on the drawing boards.

JWST has to get far enough away from the Earth to avoid Earth’s own IR emissions, to say nothing of the (extremely rarified) gas and dust that the Earth-moon system traps.

So it’s a one-way trip.

Let’s hope it works upon arrival.

Thinking semi-autonomous bots for the trip. We have a lot of time invested in Webb, and it might be cool to do interferometry with a Webb II. Perhaps by then someone will have something big on the Moon.

re: #64 Decatur Deb

It is highly doubtful that something like the JWST would be funded if it started these days.

While the JWST is the most expensive science satellite, if one adjusts Hubble’s procurement costs to today’s money Hubble too would cost a lot (but not as much as the JWST.)

There is much competition for science funding, and I doubt that a non-reusable non-repairable science satellite more expensive than JWST will ever be forthcoming.

So this mission is critical, which is why there is so much tension around it.

Lower cost IR telescopes could be built, but with more limited capability.

The next big thing in astronomy observatories in space will be when/if a gravity wave system can be put in place. There are such things on paper. In space the device can have much more precision than the gravity wave detectors on Earth (e.g. LIGO.)

But such a system should not cost as much as JWST.

Want to dominate the entire planet militarily, you need at least three CVBGs, one for each ocean and four would be better (the Pacific is big and really requires two). Each CVN has a lot of dockyard downtime scheduled over the next few decades so they need a hot spare. After that there’s the training for Biggles, at least one CVN sailing round in circles off San Diego so the flyboys can keep up to date with the technical aspects of landing and taking off from a postage-stamp in the middle of the ocean.

Myself I’d probably consider the option of a specialist air operations training non-nuclear CV, a bit like the weirdest aircraft carriers of WW2, the Wolverine and Sable. It would be a lot cheaper to build and operate but it couldn’t be deployed for front-line duties.

Santa Shortage: Company Says ‘Vast Majority’ of Its 335 Santas Who Died Over Last Year Were COVID-Related

Companies such as Hire Santa, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas, have been unable to meet demand because the number of trained Santas has dramatically reduced from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There’s a huge demand,” said Hire Santa founder and head elf Mitch Allen. As a result of the shortage, some retailers have been forced to ask Santas to limit their hours or work substantially more hours.

Allen told Yahoo! that Hire Santa also “lost a tremendous number of Santas over the last 18 months.” He said that at least 335 of the Santas the company have hired in the past died in 2021, and COVID-19 was the leading cause of death. “As you can imagine, our Santa Claus entertainers are susceptible to a negative outcome if they catch COVID-19,” he added, stressing that the majority of the company’s Santas are older and possibly overweight men.

Some minor streaming platform had a fake documentary, “Secrets of Christmas Revealed” that then ran on Fox (not the news division) — supposedly a huge data breach from Santa’s computers.

It was actually really cute;

a VP at Mattel told us about the deal they cut with Santa when elves couldn’t keep up with demand, Harvey Levin of TMZ explained that Santa’s naughty list isn’t actually the worst list for Hollywood people to be on; somebody from the FAA came on to tell us that Rudolph’s red nose is because there’s regulations about navigation lights so other airborne vehicles can tell which direction you’re going; a VP from UPS talked about delivery; a real estate broker from one of those reality shows talked about why Santa chose the North Pole instead of the South Pole (penguins are *terrible* toymakers, elves were a better choice because they have opposable thumbs); a physicist and a comic book writer told us that Santa’s ability to deliver to so many places in such a short time is because electrical particles from the northern lights turned him into a superhero (like Peter Parker’s spider bite, or whatever it was that happened to the Hulk) That’s also how the reindeer gained the power of flight.

My favorite bit was that Mrs Claus made sweaters for the elves, she meant well, but she has no fashion sense and they were just hideous. The elves would wear them once to avoid hurting Mrs Claus’ feelings, then slip them into the delivery bags and people would end up with them, that’s where the Ugly Christmas Sweater tradition came from.

Also, Santa and Krampus are partners. They run a good cop/bad cop scam.

A Mom Anon  Dec 25, 2021 • 8:44:53am

I am grateful today for:

1)my husband being home from the hospital. He’s having trouble sleeping, so he’s napping right now. I think he gets anxious and scared a lot now, and I don’t blame him. But he’s home and the cardiovascular doc says he’s doing well. More doc appointments on the horizon.

2)my son has been hanging around home a lot more since this happened. He’s going out for New Year’s, but he’s been home since his dad went into the hospital on the 12th. I try hard not to be a clingy mom, but I miss his face when he’s not around.

3)the hospital hasn’t sent us any bills, yet. We shall see, but I will take blissful ignorance for now.

4)we have a roof and food. A lot of people don’t and I remember times when I haven’t, so I am always, always grateful for those things. There’s nothing that compares with the stress and sadness that comes with homelessness.

5)Cleo. Cleo is not my dog, oh noooo, she is most certainly The Husband’s doggo. But she’s goofy and weird and sweet when she’s not being a complete overprotective spaz. And she was such a good girl all those days I had to run back and forth to the hospital. That was her first time alone at home for any length of time since we got her. She deserves more than we can give her, but I wouldn’t have been functional over the last couple of weeks without her snuggles while I cried and cried.

6)for the people I have met here and on Facebook. I haven’t met too many of you in person, but someday I hope life allows for that. And if any of you find yourselves in metro Atlanta, send me a message or email. I’ll cook dinner and welcome you with open arms.

This time of year is hard for me, but I try to take lots of deep breaths and find as many reasons as I can to find joy and many of those reasons are right here in this little corner of the internet. Much love, happy times and a better year are my wishes for all of you.

URGENT COMMUNIQUE FROM GRINCH AND SCROOGE SUPREME WORLD HEADQUARTERS

Subject: “war on Christmas”

It is my sad duty to report that our efforts to intercept the “Red Elf” Santa Claus and his propaganda sleigh have once again been frustrated by the illegal, unconstitutional intervention of NORAD, a federally funded agency that has no business facilitating the religiously motivated bribery of children.
The news is equally bleak elsewhere. On the commerce front, even the grinchiest of business enterprises, Walmart, has closed for the day. The only bright spot is that the Salvation Army’s infantry, the notorious “bell ringers,” have finally been forced to retreat back to their lairs with loot in hand.

that he might be Lord over all the earth when it was suited to Man.

3 And on the seven millionth day Man rested
and did lean heavily on his God and saw that it was good.

4 And Man formed Aqualung of the dust of the ground,
and a host of others likened unto his kind.

5 And these lesser men Man did cast into the void. And some were burned;
and some were put apart from their kind.

6 And Man became the God that he had created
and with his miracles did rule over all the earth.

7 But as these things did come to pass,
the Spirit that did cause Man to create his God
lived on within all men: even within Aqualung.

8 And Man saw it not.

9 But for Christ’s sake he’d better start looking.

Joke — online parody. Fisher-Price had to respond with a tweet to explain it was not real and they had nothing to do with the fake ad.

Well yes, there is a whole sub-genre of Fisher-Price and Lego parody ads. I was not aware that Fisher-Price had responded though.

re: #164 A Mom Anon

I am grateful today…

So glad you’re having this day of rest and respite with the hubs and the son and the goof puppy!

Yes, it’s great when the grown kid is around — I’m typing this as I sit in my recliner in the living room, while my son plays a video game with his friend on his laptop and my semi-adopted son plays a different game on the big-screen TV. Husband has escaped to our bedroom to stretch out and read his new books. A nice family Christmas, all of my boys are enjoying their presents.

From a 2016 article (when this “ad” was first posted)

Fisher-Price has taken to Twitter to debunk any notion it has a bar-themed playset for toddlers.

The picture prompted some Twitter complaints to Fisher-Price. The toymaker’s account responded that the product wasn’t “endorsed, produced or approved by Fisher-Price.”

The image was posted just two days after Fisher-Price was the target of a spoof by “Saturday Night Live,” which aired a fake ad for toys for sensitive boys, including a wishing well

Whatever it takes to get more people to take the damn vaccine. There will still be those braindead morons that will still not listen (like the ones who boo’d TFG when he mentioned vaccine and boosters). But I guess we will be saddled with them until they wise up, die of Covid or just get old enough for regular age to take them.

1961: Ken and Chatty Cathy compete over the doll market
Hot on Barbie’s heels, Chatty Cathy made her debut in 1961. The doll was powered by a phonograph record in her stomach and came with 11 prerecorded phrases. By the end of the year, she was the second most popular doll in the country, after Barbie.
