Just got home from visiting my spouse’s family. Her mom is 87 and her brother is in very poor health, so we try to visit when possible, although it means 4+ hours in the car.

But we also got to see her son and the grandkids and had a great dinner socializing with family.

Everyone was vaxxed and boosted but being unmasked around other people was uncomfortable. But playing with the grandkids made it worthwhile.

Not seeing my kids and grandkids until the 30th, so that all of us can verify we are okay before getting together.

My son-in-laws Christmas tree in the living room is 16 feet tall. Got it after building the house. First year decorating was fun. This year he mentioned it’s scary up on the ladder decorating. He sighed “What was I thinking”.

Had there been regulations in place to enforce weatherization recommendations, last winter’s disaster may not have hit so hard.
A number of reports from energy experts show the Texas grid is not prepared for winter.

There isn’t a vehicle to carry hoomans and fuel to L2. There won’t be any in 10 years, none on the drawing boards.

JWST has to get far enough away from the Earth to avoid Earth’s own IR emissions, to say nothing of the (extremely rarified) gas and dust that the Earth-moon system traps.

So it’s a one-way trip.

Let’s hope it works upon arrival.

It is highly doubtful that something like the JWST would be funded if it started these days.

While the JWST is the most expensive science satellite, if one adjusts Hubble’s procurement costs to today’s money Hubble too would cost a lot (but not as much as the JWST.)

There is much competition for science funding, and I doubt that a non-reusable non-repairable science satellite more expensive than JWST will ever be forthcoming.

So this mission is critical, which is why there is so much tension around it.

Lower cost IR telescopes could be built, but with more limited capability.

The next big thing in astronomy observatories in space will be when/if a gravity wave system can be put in place. There are such things on paper. In space the device can have much more precision than the gravity wave detectors on Earth (e.g. LIGO.)

But such a system should not cost as much as JWST.

Want to dominate the entire planet militarily, you need at least three CVBGs, one for each ocean and four would be better (the Pacific is big and really requires two). Each CVN has a lot of dockyard downtime scheduled over the next few decades so they need a hot spare. After that there’s the training for Biggles, at least one CVN sailing round in circles off San Diego so the flyboys can keep up to date with the technical aspects of landing and taking off from a postage-stamp in the middle of the ocean.

Myself I’d probably consider the option of a specialist air operations training non-nuclear CV, a bit like the weirdest aircraft carriers of WW2, the Wolverine and Sable. It would be a lot cheaper to build and operate but it couldn’t be deployed for front-line duties.

Companies such as Hire Santa, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas, have been unable to meet demand because the number of trained Santas has dramatically reduced from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There’s a huge demand,” said Hire Santa founder and head elf Mitch Allen. As a result of the shortage, some retailers have been forced to ask Santas to limit their hours or work substantially more hours.

Allen told Yahoo! that Hire Santa also “lost a tremendous number of Santas over the last 18 months.” He said that at least 335 of the Santas the company have hired in the past died in 2021, and COVID-19 was the leading cause of death. “As you can imagine, our Santa Claus entertainers are susceptible to a negative outcome if they catch COVID-19,” he added, stressing that the majority of the company’s Santas are older and possibly overweight men.

My favorite bit was that Mrs Claus made sweaters for the elves, she meant well, but she has no fashion sense and they were just hideous. The elves would wear them once to avoid hurting Mrs Claus’ feelings, then slip them into the delivery bags and people would end up with them, that’s where the Ugly Christmas Sweater tradition came from.

Also, Santa and Krampus are partners. They run a good cop/bad cop scam.

I am grateful today for:

1)my husband being home from the hospital. He’s having trouble sleeping, so he’s napping right now. I think he gets anxious and scared a lot now, and I don’t blame him. But he’s home and the cardiovascular doc says he’s doing well. More doc appointments on the horizon.

2)my son has been hanging around home a lot more since this happened. He’s going out for New Year’s, but he’s been home since his dad went into the hospital on the 12th. I try hard not to be a clingy mom, but I miss his face when he’s not around.

3)the hospital hasn’t sent us any bills, yet. We shall see, but I will take blissful ignorance for now.

4)we have a roof and food. A lot of people don’t and I remember times when I haven’t, so I am always, always grateful for those things. There’s nothing that compares with the stress and sadness that comes with homelessness.

5)Cleo. Cleo is not my dog, oh noooo, she is most certainly The Husband’s doggo. But she’s goofy and weird and sweet when she’s not being a complete overprotective spaz. And she was such a good girl all those days I had to run back and forth to the hospital. That was her first time alone at home for any length of time since we got her. She deserves more than we can give her, but I wouldn’t have been functional over the last couple of weeks without her snuggles while I cried and cried.

6)for the people I have met here and on Facebook. I haven’t met too many of you in person, but someday I hope life allows for that. And if any of you find yourselves in metro Atlanta, send me a message or email. I’ll cook dinner and welcome you with open arms.

This time of year is hard for me, but I try to take lots of deep breaths and find as many reasons as I can to find joy and many of those reasons are right here in this little corner of the internet. Much love, happy times and a better year are my wishes for all of you.

So glad you’re having this day of rest and respite with the hubs and the son and the goof puppy!

Yes, it’s great when the grown kid is around — I’m typing this as I sit in my recliner in the living room, while my son plays a video game with his friend on his laptop and my semi-adopted son plays a different game on the big-screen TV. Husband has escaped to our bedroom to stretch out and read his new books. A nice family Christmas, all of my boys are enjoying their presents.

Fisher-Price has taken to Twitter to debunk any notion it has a bar-themed playset for toddlers.

The picture prompted some Twitter complaints to Fisher-Price. The toymaker’s account responded that the product wasn’t “endorsed, produced or approved by Fisher-Price.”

The image was posted just two days after Fisher-Price was the target of a spoof by “Saturday Night Live,” which aired a fake ad for toys for sensitive boys, including a wishing well
