Bruce Hornsby Solo: “My Resolve”

In a potentially cosmic coincidence, I had just listened to this great song on Bruce Hornsby’s latest album, Non-Secure Connection, happened to jump over to YouTube and here’s a brand new live solo recording of it, stripped down but intact in its essence.

Today’s feature draws from Bruce’s collaboration with The Shins’ James Mercer for 2020’s Non-Secure Connection album. The song, “My Resolve”, was selected by The New York Times as one of the Best Pop Songs of 2020.

Ash plumes rise
In electrified skies
Incandescent light
Oh, with flash bolt eyes
And no one knows why
I’ve been drawn to this lie
I’m down when they’re high
On a survival line
In my resolve, I move the rock
Maybe fall down trying
My ineptitude stares me down
In this space, I cower
I try to stand above the frame
Stand apart, not by it
And I move on up above the hill
To maybe fully flower
I flower
Reach for the heights
And then throw on to the depths
I look for someone wise
With a soft caress
Will I find myself alone
Repeating numbing ties
You could help roll it up
‘Cause I got no backup plan
Oh, in my resolve, I move the rock
Maybe fall down trying
My ineptitude stares me down
In this space, I cower
I try to stand above the frame
Stand apart, not by it
And I move on up above the hill
To maybe fully flower
Ooh, I flower
Move on up and I roll back down
Grandpa’s book, no one hears my sound
Upward, downward for so long
With my resolve, I climb and climb and I fall
In my resolve, I move the rock
Maybe fall down trying
My ineptitude stares me down
In this space, I cower
I try to stand above the frame
Stand apart, not by it
And I move on up above the hill
To maybe fully flower
Ash plumes rise
In an electrified sky
An incandescent light
With flash bolt eyes
On a survival line

My Resolve

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A ballot drive being launched in Michigan would protect women’s right to an abortion in case the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Reproductive Freedom for All’s petition would amend the state constitution to affirm the right to make pregnancy decisions without political interference, including abortion, supporters said.

The ballot committee needs about 425,000 voter signatures to put the measure on the November ballot.

Absolutely. I can’t smoke, but I know how to make tasty edibles from a bag of buds. Delta 8 thc tincture is a good thing too, but has become kind of expensive. I don’t disagree, and these things are pretty impressive, considering what we’re up against to do anything.

I’m more concerned with the lack of community that’s a result of this rugged individualism/bootstraps/only bad people fall on hard times and circumstances crap we’ve been sold. We have lost a sense of community, which makes it a lot easier make us hate each other. I’m not sure we can fight back against this effectively because you do have to become what you’re fighting against to at least some degree and fight back dirty to win sometimes. This is evil shit and it does not respond to rules and decorum. You use all the tools you have, and you fight back like they do. Not forever, but to knock back the evil so it’s not so overwhelming.

A better-educated voting public is the enemy of Republican politics. It’s no mystery why they’re so opposed to public education.

That may be true but the members of the Trump cult I know are well educated. Racism and hatred of the other are not limited to the uneducated masses. Contempt toward the poor and essential workers are widespread among the GOP elite, many of whom attended top universities.

Sure, the Black Death ended feudalism. And all it took was 30% of Europe’s population dying off.

COVID may be helping workers adjust the balance of the scales, but it’s nowhere near the die-off that would cause a radical alteration of our entire global economic system.

Feudalism didn’t fully end in France till the revolution. The reforms in England were bloody and hard fought and the Magna Carta had more impact on ending feudalism (by beginning stripping the power of the monarch down to other aristocrats) than did the massive death rates and movement to cities that accompanied those deaths.

History is never as pretty and simple as some would like.

Right, the Black Death did not so much “end” feudalism as it did raise the equality of workers by making labor more valuable. Lords and estates did not disappear, but workers felt greater freedom to move to where their work was valued rather than being stuck on the same land from birth to death.

One of the bigger issues with thinking that COVID is gonna totally undo the capitalist system? The bulk of the deaths due to COVID have happened in those age ranges where workers were either close to or already retired. The Black Death’s greatest impact was that it hit most age groups and demographics fairly equally, where centuries of advancement in medical tech means most people dying due to COVID are ones who the common flu regularly preys upon. There’s a lot more forces at work than simply people dying due to COVID when discussing the massive shakeup we’re seeing on the global economy.

One last thing before bed. This, newrepublic.com, is an old New Republic story about a book called The Virtue of National Conservatism. The author, Yoram Hazony, is Israeli, and argues that it is perfectly OK for conservative values to be imposed on citizens, and that nationalism, not internationalism, is the proper organization. As you can imagine, it is very well received in conservative circles.

Hostile architecture is one of my soap boxes. How I hate the way so many public spaces are designed today - human hostile. It’s like the city planners absolutely don’t want humans to sit down anywhere.

This arises, again, out of designing our lives to be car-centric, not human centric.

Also, city planners and politicians want to make sure homeless people are run off.

Weather Update:

The snowstorm portion of the predicted SE Alaska weather apocalypse has been way less than expected. Instead of the 12-24 inches of snow predicted we got about 10 inches. I checked the thermometer and the outside temp has risen from the single digits this morning to the current 36 F. The biggest temp increase was in just the last couple of hours.

The melting has begun. I just let the dogs out and the snow on my back lawn has gone from fluffy power to wet, sloppy crap. The big question is if the storm drains will be able to handle the snowmelt. Currently the 18” of snow we received over the past two weeks has been plowed into 4-6 foot icy berms alongside all the roads and the storm drains are well covered by snow and ice. Heavy rain coupled with snow melt could turn our streets into rivers. (I guess that’s O.K. as there’s lot of boats in Juneau.)

One other last comment about the local National Weather Service office. So far this year they have demonstrated a tendency to significantly over estimate potential snow accumulations in their snowstorm forecasts. I hope this trend continues with their predicted rainfall amounts.

So, the message here is: AOC got COVID because she wasn’t wearing a mask and she went to Florida? Unstated, of course, is that vaccines don’t work and FOX viewers should continue to get sick and die at ten plus times the rate that vaccinated people do.

They’re so busy trying to own AOC on social media they can’t think of what they’re actually saying. I think that’s one of the things that Biden did right in the campaign: don’t waste your time and muddy your message by trying to own assholes on Twitter. Not that I’m aware of, but it is supposed to snow on Friday. The warm air is very un-seasonal here; January is typically the time for days more like today, where we have lows deep in the negatives and highs either barely above, or frequently several degrees below, 0 °F.

They’re so busy trying to own AOC on social media they can’t think of what they’re actually saying. I think that’s one of the things that Biden did right in the campaign: don’t waste your time and muddy your message by trying to own assholes on Twitter. Who cares, especially if they’re shameless liars and can’t really be owned anyways.

The GOP hates AOC. Not just because she is educated, ethnic and urban, but also because she is hot and those pathetic limp dicks know that they never stand a chance of nailing her.

That is enough to drive them to a blind rage.

Justice is slow, we are impatient, we want to know everything now. But!! Savor the moment. This disgusting un-American disgrace to Congress and Ohio State is officially on notice that his name is on the Jan 6 list and he knows they know something but he can’t be sure what. (It’s not like Cheney or Kinzinger will leak to him). So we have to wait but every day he wakes up knowing he didn’t get away with it, the dirt will come out eventually and there is nothing he can do about it.

Then reel in disgust that Kevin tried to put this yapping bag of turds on the Jan 6 Committee, where he would have been given a podium to bray horse shit and been a mole calling up Dotard and the rest of the fascists ten times a day to tell them everything the Committee has….

Because that’s the center of the Jordan story. Kevin had to know Jordan was in on the plot, and was complicit enough in the cover-up to try to put a conspirator right on the Committee.

God bless tough smart Nancy Pelosi who saw that plot and said no f*cking way.

The Australian court apparently believes he can; they claimed that “he could do nothing more” to comply with Australian regulations, which, it seems to me, is simply bunk: He could’ve just gotten his damn shots. I do, however, agree with the court’s ruling that the government did not follow proper procedure in the decision to cancel his visa. That whole thing was apparently a bit of a Charlie Foxtrot, and in a case as high-profile as this, you kinda have to make sure you’re following the letter of the law.

Good. I hope they keep pushing on it. The filibuster is a tenuous concept on its face, but its current implementation is absolutely ridiculous. Being able to prevent legislation from even being DEBATED simply because one senator from the minority party says, “no,” is the dumbest legislative rule imaginable - all the more so in the current adversarial political environment, where Republicans oppose everything Democrats do for no other reason than, “Well, they’re Democrats.”

re voting rights:

My comment is this: Something big and complicated doesn’t happen if it isn’t discussed and normalized. In 1994, gay marriage was an impossibility. In 1923, Social Security was not possible in the US. In 1954 a Southern Senator becoming President and pushing through the Civil Right and Voting Rights Acts seemed impossible, truly unthinkable.

If you want something to change, you better be talking it up, getting debate going, confronting resisters, getting voters on your side. So, pushing your case when you don’t have Senate votes locked up yet is actually smart in a representative democracy. If it was easy it wouldn’t take negotiation and would just get done.

One comment I saw back about a year ago regarding sterilising and re-using facemasks was from an industrial engineer who was sterilising three-fold surgical masks (the “blue” masks which were in short supply then). He was using one of his facility’s Co-60 gamma ray sources to do this. The sources are normally used to radiograph welds in pipes and structural members and he figured if the source’s gamma radiation could penetrate two centimetres of steel then they’d do a number on any viruses trapped in the mask material but without physically damaging the masks themselves.

Whether something is possible with a combination of omicron and delta is one thing.

Whether it’s transmissible and able to replicate and compete with other variants - beating other variants is quite another.

If the answer to the latter is that it’s not really transmissible and it’s only a one-off, then it’s not a significant concern. If it’s transmissible and can crowd out other variants, then it’s a major concern because you’d get the transmissibility of omicron and the deadly outcomes of delta.

Right now, I think it’s a one-off or relic of a contaminated sample.

Seeing as Trump has been more than “evasive” when it comes to subpoenaed of a process surver.

Naturally, I’m rooting for Thompson’s request to be OK’d by the court. But I will not hold my breath on this one. His Orange Litiginous is very good at tying things up in the courts.

As the article points out, the guy isn’t the smartest insurrectionist:

Dustin Byron Thompson and Robert Anthony Lyon were sitting on the sidewalk on a street near the U.S. Capitol grounds hours after the Jan. 6 rioting when they were approached by two Capitol Police special agents.

Thompson, 36, of Columbus’ University District, was wearing a Trump 2020 winter hat and a bulletproof vest, and Lyon, 27, whom records indicate has resided in Columbus and Reynoldsburg, had a Trump 2020 flag. The pair told the agents they were waiting for an Uber to take them back to their Maryland hotel, according to court records obtained by The Dispatch.

The agents told the men that they were in a secure zone and directed them to a location where they could be picked up. As the two began to leave, Thompson picked up a wooden coat rack with brass holders that was behind him.

Right in front of the agents.

I don’t do Instagram or TikTok, so I don’t know if she’s said anything on any other platform, but I would like for her to come out and say at some point that she’s a great example of the need to take the virus seriously at all times.

And he won.

Judge Anthony Kelly agreed, ruling quickly that authorities’ action to cancel the star athlete’s visa was “unreasonable” and that the “back and forth” between various levels of government was a waste of time. “The point that I’m somewhat agitated about is, what more could this man have done,” Kelly told the court. “The transcript is replete with statements by Mr. Djokovic saying, ‘If you will let me talk to people, though you’ve taken my phone from me, I will try and get you what you want’.”

Djokovic had received a medical exemption to compete in this month’s Australian open where he hopes to win his 21st Grand Slam title later this month. Djokovic’s exemption was based on the fact he tested positive for COVID-19 in early December and, as such, did not need to be vaccinated to compete. A copy of his positive PCR test was released as part of the court proceedings, but the date on it—December 16—means that a slew of photos of the maskless athlete with young kids taken on Dec. 17 came after he likely knew he was positive.

He could have gotten vaccinated like a responsible adult.

everybody who gets infected does not live
everybody who gets it does not die

some cases are severe
some cases are mild

some require hospitalization
some do not require hospitalization

some people experience very long term health problems
some people experience none at all

how can you be sure which infection you are going to have?

There are good reasons to hold people in jail without a conviction. Poor, mentally ill, or addicted to drugs are not good reasons. Locking a person up should be because they are an imminent danger to others (imminent danger to themselves is a mental health issue, and should be treated as such). Do that, and our prison population would go WAY down.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, a top fundraiser for former president Donald Trump and the girlfriend of his son Donald Trump Jr., boasted to a GOP operative that she had raised $3 million for the rally that helped fuel the January 6 Capitol riot. In a series of text messages sent on January 4 to Katrina Pierson, the White House liaison to the event, Guilfoyle detailed her fundraising efforts and supported a push to get far-right speakers on the stage alongside Trump for the rally, which sought to overturn the election of President Joe Biden.

Guilfoyle’s texts, reviewed by ProPublica, represent the strongest indication yet that members of the Trump family circle were directly involved in the financing and organization of the rally. The attack on the Capitol that followed it left five dead and scores injured.

I take 50 mg spironolactone 2X daily to suppress testosterone. My Endo was hesitant about that high of a dose as spiro is primarily used to treat high blood pressure and I also take 40 mg Lisinopril once daily. Spiro is also a f-ing diuretic so I am always going to the bathroom because of the amount of water I drink to counteract that. Which in turn messes with my sodium level. Toss in the Estradiol (increased risk of blood clots) and HRT can be a bit of a challenge at times. But it’s better than being dead.

All this fake cure stuff is the result of people not being mentally well enough to vaccinate, but wanting to pretend that they’re doing something to save themselves while not being culturally able to save themselves. These quack testosterone-based “therapies” are based on the fact that covid deaths were more common in men, at least early on in the pandemic.

Antibody therapy (only one works for omicron, and is pretty much out) and fluvoxamine (no strong evidence for or against - which of course means the effect is weak) are not quackery in and of themselves, but the idea that you could doctor yourself instead of getting vaccinated and seeing a good doctor is stupid.

Therefore, they must do everything within their power NOT to get vaccinated, or mask, or social distance, or do ANYTHING WHATSOEVER to mitigate the pandemic - purely because The Enemy (tm) IS doing those things. At the very least viagra was developed initially as heart medication before the um, side affects were seen. I can see where a vaso dilator improving blood flow could also improve oxygenation. Of course I think there is all of 1 anecdotal case of it working in a nurse in the UK.

Up until Ivermectin, as far as I’ve been able to tell, they have been picking things that have some veneer of anti-viral or immune-system-boosting properties. I don’t know how in the hell Viagra or any of those hormonal therapies entered that conversation.

I had read somewhere that ivermectin was helpful in Africa and certain countries elsewhere because it treated parasites, a frequent comorbidity in those nations, so its effect was improving odds of survival by curing other health issues.

re: #177 Dangerman

this is my question w/r/t covid infections, especially to the not vaccinated and anti-mask/social distancers:

everybody who gets infected does not live
everybody who gets it does not die

some cases are severe
some cases are mild

some require hospitalization
some do not require hospitalization

some people experience very long term health problems
some people experience none at all

how can you be sure which infection you are going to have?

I think most antivaxxers would say the problem is that you frame those outcomes as equally likely and that their risk tolerance allows them to accept a 1 in 500 chance.

personally I wouldn’t play russian roulette even if the odds were 1 in 500, especially when the only payoff for taking that chance is continuing to live. I’ll do whatever I can to improve those odds short of walking around in a hazmat suit.

Isn’t it amazing how the pipsqueak Duchy of Moscow managed to expand into the largest country in the world simply by pre-empting various, and continuous, outside threats of aggression and expansion? This line worked in the 16th century, and it seems to still be working. In 1939-40, for example, the Wise Peace Policy of Stalin (ie Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) allowed Mother Russia to thwart the imperialist ambitions of Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The Finns escaped with their independence but it is a fact that none of their cavalry horses or their dozen or so tanks ever got anywhere close to the Kremlin.

Trump and GOP consider GOPers in WH to be immune from all crime. But that only applies to GOPers. A Democrat looking askance at a law that he complies with in fact will draw an impeachment hearing - as GOPers are warning will occur with Biden.

It was an interested thread, but it’s worth noting that Ian Ricksecker isn’t a doctor. Another thread by Robert M. Wachter, MD, chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine, had this to say:

Am I worried about Long Covid? A little. The literature is a mess: some studies show 50% of people have persistent (>1 month) symptoms. Other studies say it’s more like 5%. It seems like vax lowers the risk. So it’s a concern, but there’s not much we can do but wait & see.(22/25)

No, since impeachment is a constitutional power of Congress, and they would be impeaching him for the crime of taking a bribe, not making a speech about it.

Imran Awan thought he was living the American dream.

As a teenager in Pakistan, Awan spent money he received during the Muslim holiday of Eid on an application for the United States’ green card lottery and won. After immigrating with his family to northern Virginia, Awan built his life from almost nothing to become a shared IT employee for dozens of House Democrats, eventually landing similar jobs in the House for three family members and a friend.

But early in the Trump era, Awan found himself hounded by House Republicans, the Justice Department, and the conservative media. Thanks to conspiracy theories propagated in right-wing media outlets, Awan was turned from a total unknown into an arch-villain, accused of spying for Pakistan, extortion, and even murder. Seeking to deflect attention from the investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election, Trump demanded prosecutors look into Awan, dubbing him “the Pakistani Fraudster.”

He’s suing wingnut media, but does not seem to be suing the mad former President who ruined his life in an attempt to distract from the failed President’s own crimes.

No, since impeachment is a constitutional power of Congress, and they would be impeaching him for the crime of taking a bribe, not making a speech about it.

A better issue is whether Trump could be criminally prosecuted for soliciting a bribe from the President of Ukraine in return of weapons, an action he actually took. Trump’s lawyer would argue that because conducting foreign policy was within his presidential authority, he is immune from prosecution for asking Zelensky to announce an investigation into Joe Biden.

My guess is that it was the media that first propagated this story, which was then seized by the House Republicans and finally Trump himself. We know that, while president, Trump listened devoutly to media for hours at a time and regurgitated their lies. He wouldn’t know the name of any House staffer unless it figured prominently on some Twitter account or RW cable outlet.
