VIDEO: Trevor Noah Walks Back His Semi-Defense of Joe Rogan

Culture • Views: 25,138

YouTube

A few days ago, Trevor Noah actually sort-of defended Joe Rogan over his anti-vaccination shows, and irritated the hell out of me — because I could tell he hadn’t seen very many of Rogan’s shows, and didn’t really know what was going on.

Well, now he’s seen some more of that stuff, and he has a different opinion.

India Arie, the latest musician to remove their music from Spotify because of Joe Rogan’s podcast, shares multiple videos of Rogan saying the N-word, and Spotify throws another $100 million at the problem. #DailyShow

They’re being told that any edgy comic will be a target because Rogan has been condemned for saying racist shit and spreading COVID and vaccine disinformation. It doesn’t make any sense, of course.

I’m going out on a limb here and guessing it’s really possible to be very funny without being a racist, lying asshole. It can be done.

Also, you are surely allowed to speak and say what you want in America. You do not have the right to be paid 100 million dollars for it. Or even make a living at it. Or be immune from being fired over it.

I found a couple of minutes of Cawthorn speaking. He lied about election fraud, and he used the word “fight” a couple of times, but I didn’t hear him expressly encourage the crowd to assault the Capitol, so I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to be barred from running for reelection.

Tying in with the OP: Apparently Ricky Gervais, proving that there’s no daylight between him and his character on the original Office regarding cluelessness, is launching some sort of “I want to get canceled” tour.

Gee, can’t wait.

My only surprise is that he isn’t teaming up with Bill Burr, Dave Chapelle and Bill Maher for a “Comedians Against Consequences” traveling shit show.

He’s a white male Republican and cannot suffer consequences. We can all see the various crimes that these people have done and continue to do in public, but none of them are ever going to suffer a consequence. It’s just not something America can do.

Our new little kitten was just at the vet today for a couple more shots. He has gained about 1.5 lbs since his last visit just over a couple weeks ago. I could tell he was growing a bit longer and taller, but didn’t think he grew that much. He might turn into a real bruiser.

re: #2 Punish Domestic Terrorists

They’re being told that any edgy comic will be a target because Rogan has been condemned for saying racist shit and spreading COVID and vaccine disinformation. It doesn’t make any sense, of course.

as i posted the other day:

- explain the humor
- explain exactly why it’s ‘comedy’
we’ll wait…

- if this is just ‘comedy’ and ‘an act’, does that mean that privately rogan doesn’t actually believe any of this nonsense? that privately he’s vaxxed, wears a mask, does all the right things and in fact is not a racist?

because what is the comedian’s job?
‘To entertain’ is only part of it. i mean if you think he’s entertaining, ok.
But that’s not enough.
A comedian’s job is to make us laugh at the same time.

not merely to point out hypocrisy, or inanity or any other human emotions or foibles.
If your only shtick is to be ‘edgy’ and dark, to make us uncomfortable so we’ll be self reflect and better people, well that’s fine but it’s not comedy.

Show me lots of successful comedy careers built just on that.

alex jones claims to be a ‘performance artist’, not a comedian.

even Dennis miller *tried* to get laughs. his material and delivery didnt sustain his career.

michael richards was (is?) in fact a comedian.
in response to heckling he thought he was being funny on the fly with a racist rant.
he wasnt. and it didnt work.
he apologized pretty quickly and imo sincerely.
but as opposed to spotify/rogan’s ‘defiant justification’, it didnt seem to matter much.

So I again ask, where’s the comedy in all this?

I do hope Rhodes throws Tarrio under the bus, because Tarrio will throw Stone under the bus.

It’s unclear at this point just how important this meeting in a garage between Rhodes and Tarrio really was. As David Neiwert has documented extensively, the Oath Keepers were deeply involved in planning for the events of Jan. 6. That included setting up communications channels and storing caches of weapons near the city. Just before that meeting with Tarrio, Rhodes had made a purchase of over $10,000 of ammunition. That was just part of $40,000 on military equipment and ammo Rhodes acquired in the days before the assault.

Tarrio himself was not present at events on Jan. 6, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t involved in planning, or that he didn’t want to be a part of those events.

re: #371 Decatur Deb

There is an old photo saying: “The difference between a good photographer and a great photographer is the size of their garbage can.” The writer of the article is an art historian, but she doesn’t show much understanding of how a photo essay makes it to publication. All or most of the punctured photos are well-killed.

There is a huge difference between editing and destroying. For example, the contact sheet from Diane Arbus “Boy with a toy grenade” shows all the alternate takes that were rejected for the one that became the famous print:

Should the rest of the negatives had a hole punched in them? That’s what I think is the real sin here.

was mcconnell bodysnatched?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticized the Republican National Committee for its censure of Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) for serving on the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol riots, The Hill reports.

Said McConnell: “It was a violent insurrection with the purpose of trying to prevent peaceful transfer of power. That’s what it was.”

McConnell said he had confidence in McDaniel but that the job of the RNC was supporting all Republicans, not “singling out” members of the party.

“This issue is whether or not the RNC should be sort of singling out members of our party who may have different views from the majority. That’s not the job of the RNC,” he added about the censure resolution.

Useful shots? Yeah, that might be right. One really good shot a month, one exceptional shot a year, one great one in most photographer’s lifetime.

The big problem - the elephant eyeing the darkroom as it were - is that most don’t really do a good job at editing. It’s fooking hard work so you see lot’s of people throw the entire contents of their SD card on the web with no editing or curating at all.

Avoiding that is the biggest reason I have so few photos posted at Poetry of Light and Landscape by William Lewis When I do want to add a photo, I remove one to maintain that number.

Law enforcement investigating and arresting crypto thieves seems to me more like money than crypto used to be, but their involvement also undermines the primary uses of crypto, buying drugs, and money smuggling. Bitcoin was built to be traceable, and the software to trace it is no longer in its infancy.

I start most of my Wordles with AEGIS and YOUTH to hit all the vowels, and some common consonants.

It tends to reliably deliver results at the fifth guess, which isn’t great compared to some others here.

I usually start with STARE to get a number of the most common voewls and consonants out of the way (as well as the very common ST grouping) and work from there. For the occasional attempt that nothing hits, then my second guess is usually CLOUD to hit most of the rest of the vowels (including the OU combo) and some of the other common consonants.

Heh. Live and learn….

But you’d never get it in one. Wordle has a list of valid guesses those words could be in, but the list of valid answers is words that are reasonably well known. It’s a high risk, high reward strategy with the objective of maximising your chances to get it in three.

It’s also incompatible with Hard Mode, where you must use the yellows and greens appropriately in your subsequent guesses. I’m using it, but I find “hard mode” a bit of a misnomer as it prevents you from making a lot of silly mistakes.

The problem with hard mode is that when you have to find a specific letter and there are too many possibilities, you cannot narrow down the choices by testing a word that contains several of the letters.

I’m looking seriously at making a big push to get HTTPS set up here. One of the reasons I’ve been holding off is because you get a lot fewer ads from Google Adsense in HTTPS mode; there are lots of complaints online from developers who saw their ad income drop after making the switch. And the reason is because HTTPS mode makes it harder for advertisers to collect demographic info.

But our Adsense revenue is shitty at this point anyway, to be honest. Google has a habit of taking away, oh about 60% of your projected earnings because of unspecified “bad traffic” that they don’t tell you how to avoid. So I might as well jump into HTTPS. I have the SSL certificate - our login/registration pages have been HTTPS for years, actually. There’s just a bunch of work needed to ferret out all the HTTP links that have built up over the years. I may end up just archiving the earlier stuff and taking it offline because it would take a fucking century to go through it all.

It’s illegal what she did.

Such a weird way of speaking. Those of us who speak English as our first language would say “What she did” (subject) “is illegal” (predicate)

Trump always puts the predicate first “This Horrible Thing!” then the subject “That They Did!” (whoever he is blaming)

I think this reversal of subject and predicate is deliberate and it’s not because English isn’t Trump’s first language (I suppose incoherent babble is his first language) it is blurting out stuff that he knows he has done and then finding someone else to blame it on.
