About that gallows that was constructed on Jan. 6: it was political theater. It was way too flimsy and low to hang a cat, much less a Vice President.

That part of January 6th was political theater: breaking and entering, vandalism, theft and violent assault went way beyond that

Just because that particular gallows was unusable does not mean the mob didn’t plan to “Hang Mike Pence” or murder him in a different way.

They really, really wanted to murder Mike Pence for daring to betray them by rejecting a coup attempt by the enemies of our democracy. That mob should have died that day.

i keep telling myself not to be surprised with how far the corruption goes, surely some of these folks are simply venal and can see the writing on the wall… then I have to check myself and remind myself that 18 months later, only foot soldiers are in jail. With these hearings, you have to feel like the walls are closing in and the media attention is something that will permeate into the national consciousness.

I don’t know if the gallows was built simply as a prop or if they were just too stupid to know how to construct a functional gallows, but their words and actions combined to constitute a credible threat to Mike Pence’s life and safety (and that of numerous others).

He didn’t want to pay $7.90/gal (or however much they were gouging) at the “Last Chance Gas”

Life’s been easy for a long time, other than the pandemic, so I can see why some people would be too stupid to know how to act in dangerous situations like hanging out in Death Valley, even though the danger is right there in the name.

The Department of Justice reportedly is criminally investigating the formation of alternate slates of presidential electors for Donald Trump as part of a plan to undo President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win.
That probe is particularly focused on a team of attorneys who were working for Trump on that effort, The New York Times reported.
A federal grand jury in Washington earlier this year issued subpoenas to people connected to the plan to put forward alternate electors seeking information about Trump’s former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and another Trump lawyer, John Eastman, The Times reported.

I’m actually going to argue that. Similar to pleading the Fifth Amendment, I think it’s perfectly plausible to propose a pardon for yourself, even if you don’t believe you broke the law. It’s harder to make that case, and in this case, Dr. Eastman very obviously knew he was breaking (or proposing for others to break) the law, so my hypothetical doesn’t apply here.

I have two friends who speak that slowly, and am very fond of both of them. But it was frustrating to be in prolonged visits with them, as my mind started finishing sentences (usually wrongly), as in the Bob and Tom wonderful episode, Slow Talkers of America. At one time, the two of them were working on a complicated project together, and mutual friends wondered if they would ever get down to finishing it. It took a long time, but they did!

It was in the mid-1600s when there was a spike in samurai “following their lord in death” instead of looking for a new job. The Tokugawa gv’t frowned on this kind of behavior. In the early ’80s my granddad bought a literal “driven by an old lady” for super cheap 1971 Plymouth Valiant for my brother. By the time my brother sold it to me for $1 in 1986 it had been set on fire in his Philadelphia neighborhood. The entire control panel didn’t work: no speedometer, heat, A/C, radio; it stalled whenever I made a left turn so that I had to throw it into N to restart midturn, and I had to pump the brakes a couple of times to get them to engage. Oh, and in a separate incident the passenger—side door could only be opened from the inside (which was the first embarrassment on at least one date).

And yet I managed to sell it for $120 to a guy I met at Earlham College when I was training for a few weeks to go to Japan to teach English.

they elect tim scott because he got installed in that seat and they recognize the name.

Also, because all of his Dem opponents have been Black, women and/or Black women. (I’m going all the way back to his election in House District 1—that Repub primary was the only truly contested race he’s been in, where he beat Strom Thurmond’s son in the runoff for the nomination)

re: #204 Barefoot Grin

Those slant-six Valiant/Darts were amazing cars. The body would rust and rattle and disintegrate to dust. But that engine and drive train would run forever.

I’m still amazed at how many of us survived our first car. Mine was a 1970 Dodge Demon. It had originally been owned by a scuba diver. She got sand inext to the gasket for the trunk lid. Water eventually rusted through that and pooled into the trunk onto the dimple at the bottom. It eventually rusted through that and pooled onto the top of the gas tank. When it rusted through that, she sold it to me for $200.

I told friends not to smoke in the back seat. They thought I was joking. Until they got in. (There is back pressure in the gas tank. Which led to terrible gas mileage.)

Eventually, I had a friend at a shop replace the gas tank and fix the holes in the floorboard. Then drove it to a friend’s farm and we replaced the entire exhaust system from the engine block on back.

After all that, I started to drive home and ended up having to have the car towed home…

Why? Well the float in the carburetor’s reservoir got gaslogged? waterlogged on gas? And kept flooding the engine. I replaced the carburetor and it ran for years afterwards.

Also had a friend who stopped his jeep at a light. Only to watch one of the wheels roll into the intersection.

Hahahaha. It’s true though. My second son now drives his brother’s 2007 Prius that passed all inspections until this last one (needed a part to the exhaust system, and it was costly). Otherwise, it’s a completely reliable car.

My Dad was the General Manager of an automotive supply and machine store back when the slant-six engines were popular. He never stocked parts (valves, pistons, gaskets, etc.) for those engines as they were never brought in for rebuilding. Next to the GM 283 and 350 those slant-sixes were one of the best engines ever built.

I love our Honda Civic and Toyota Rav4, but you have to hire a child to replace a headlight. After my Plymouth Valiant, I owned a Ford Ranger. I both cars there was so much room under the hood to work.

Son1 had a mid-60s Mustang, with the small engine. I remember sitting on the radiator mount with one leg down each side of the block to work on the carb.

My brother—the one who got the Valiant—first had an MG Midget. He spent so much time in the driveway with his gearhead friends trying to fix the oil leaks.

I had one—the old chrome bumper version from before ‘80. (And two parts donors out back on blocks.) Totally fun car.

The woman to Jacob’s left has the most remarkable resting bitch-face I’ve ever seen.

Not That There’s Anything Wrong With That. Just an observation.

There were a couple of other things that got my attention today.

Like how Trump called Pence a “pussy”? On the phone? From the Oval?

The man is an idiot. And he is without any guardrails, a complete Sociopath.
