Colbert: Former Pres Suspected of Witness Tampering; SCOTUS Takes Tire Iron to Separation of Church & State

Politics • Views: 18,946

The former president publicly went after Cassidy Hutchinson after her testimony in front of the Jan. 6th Committee, and he may have attempted to intimidate her behind the scenes as well. Over at the Supreme Court, their recent rulings regarding religion further erode the idea that America’s government should operate independently of any church. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

SAN FRANCISCO - Wastewater samples taken from a San Francisco treatment plant this week have detected traces of monkeypox virus, researchers say.

Results of a second detection of the virus came on Friday, according to representatives from the Sewer Coronavirus Alert Network (SCAN).

The Oceanside Treatment Plant serves about a third of San Francisco’s residents on the city’s west side. The samples were taken Monday, June 20 and Thursday, June 23.

The samples “showed small concentrations of viral DNA for the disease,” researchers said.

SCAN has been testing wastewater for COVID-19 during the pandemic. Earlier this month they began testing for monkeypox DNA.

Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight is part of a special breed of Hollywood dinosaurs who, in recent years, have gone full red pill and let their questionable political views overshadow their decades-long career. (Looking at you, James Woods and James Caan!)

But Angelina Jolie’s very understandably estranged father went perhaps a step too far this week by calling for the impeachment of President Joe Biden for “wronging this nation’s glory.” The dubious nature of the allegation notwithstanding, however, last time we checked, that was not actually an impeachable offense.

Jon Voight is swiftly reminded how irrelevant he is after calling for Biden’s impeachment (WeGotThisCovered)

It wasn’t on track to get this bad until they got Catholic Barbie on the Court. Once they replaced the venerable Ruth Bader Ginsburg with that nakedly partisan hack, they had a Court majority that they could ensure would survive any last-minute changes of heart by any one of their bunch of robed assholes. That’s when I knew that the coming Court term was going to be an unmitigated disaster. It was then that the right-wing nutjobs decided to start suing for anything and everything, with the express intent of getting it before the Court before anyone could do anything to stop it.

I will echo this but not bother with the sarc tags. A fundie judge won’t have much to do re abortion in Kentucky. I will need to see what Biden got from the deal. I hear it’s a free hand with judge nominations for an unspecified time period. Not sure the minority leader can whip hard enough to make time wasting objections go away.

If that’s true, and IF - biggest IF of my life - McConnell and the faithless Republicans actually honor that agreement, I would take it. However, I have absolutely zero faith that their word means anything, and I am sure we’ll get a news article talking about how Biden is “disappointed” after one of his big judiciary appointments gets blue-slipped by Senate Republicans.

I don’t think it’s enough to toss all those miscreants in prison. The ALEC-izing of state legislatures and judiciary is a foundational change. When I see a Democrat respond to right wing fuckery with a cool ‘we don’t want to polarize the situation or lose trust in the institutions’ I have a big sad. The Democrats have been gifted with an issue, abortion, on which the Republicans are taking very unpopular stances on forcing children and the victims of rape and incest to give birth, and banning abortion nationally. This gives the Democrats a real shot at retaining their control of Congress, and maybe even increasing their Senate majority, but we can’t succumb to hopelessness and must devote ourselves to achieving this goal. All is not lost yet!

The Supreme Court’s decision to junk Roe already appears to be deeply unpopular. Several midterm polls already show voters moving toward the Democrats since the ruling came down. It sure seems like Joe Biden and his party would be wise to do anything within their power to keep the conversation focused on abortion issues, given that Democrats are probably going to get trounced in any discussion of the economy due to inflation and gas prices right now. And there may not be a better topic to focus on than the fact that many Republican-run states won’t even make exceptions for cases of rape. If your opponent sounds like a total ghoul talking about an issue, it’s probably best to make them talk about it as much as possible.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
Circuit Judge John Cooper announced Thursday he will be issuing a temporary injunctive order after determining the state’s 15-week abortion ban is unconstitutional.

“Florida passed into its constitution an explicit right to privacy that is not contained in the U.S. Constitution,” he said.

He ruled the new law, moving the deadline for women to terminate pregnancies from 24 weeks to 15 weeks, violated privacy rights in place in Florida since 1980.

I remember when GOPers like Trump were claiming that West Virginia was a paragon of virtue and that they were successfully handling the covid pandemic.

Well.. guess what…

On a per capita basis, they’ve got the fourth worst per capita death rate from covid. Mississippi is the worst in the nation, followed by Arizona and Alabama.

New Jersey is 7th, even though as of last summer, it had the highest per capita rate (the initial wave absolutely devastated the NYC metro area and NJ in particular). But good masking rules and social distancing and good vaccination campaigns blunted all the following waves.

GOP states didn’t care about any of that, and the results show - a huge body count of preventable deaths.

Pro life my ass.

Frankly, I wish we all followed the Washington State example, because they were not only part of the initial wave, but managed to do better than most everywhere else in containing, contact tracing, and stopping the spread. Had the nation followed their example consistently, the death toll would have been cut nearly in half. That’s nearly half a million people who’d still be alive if they followed Washington’s lead.

I don’t curse but McConnell can go jump off a bridge and take his scolding with him. He got exactly what he wanted and now wants the rest of us to shut up and take it. We won’t.

re: #74 lawhawk

Jay Inslee, there’s a good Democrat.

I got this from an LA city councilman when I was a deputy sheriff (circa 1979). I said, “Yeah, you’re a drunk on my highway and you’re about to be an inmate in the Bakersfield jail.” Our sheriff would back up up against politicians. Many wouldn’t, and it is unheard of in Texas. The drunken fatcat duly went to the slam, bailed out, refused to resign and was voted out that fall.

Jennifer Rubin’s solution:

The media would better serve the public if it followed two rules: First, unless they have new factual information that meet the standards for anonymous sourcing, respectable publications should not afford anonymity to those offering takes from Trump’s camp. Second, if a source is going to contest testimony under oath, the outlet should determine if the source already met with the Jan. 6 committee and consider the credibility and relevance of the source’s story (or testimony).

Of course she wasn’t being a bully. Anyone who claimed so should be slapped until they show some damn sense. Only a theocratic fascist would claim that calling out powerful theocratic fascists is bullying.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lori Lightfoot says she strongly stands by her remarks about US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas during a pride event last weekend.

Lightfoot was attending a campaign event Thursday morning, receiving endorsements for re-election from three black members of Congress: Danny Davis, Bobby Rush and Robyn Kelly. The mayor was asked about her vulgar comment made toward Justice Thomas on Sunday.

No apologies, no regrets, she said. Lightfoot believes that she was not being a bully, but rather speaking the truth.

“Clarence Thomas has proven himself, over and over again, and particularly with that concurring opinion, that he is somebody who doesn’t care or respect for the rights of anyone, except for himself,” Lightfoot argued.

Wow, what a rotten day yesterday.

Between Kimball, Nebr. and Pine Bluffs, Wyo., I drove right into a rain-wrapped F0 tornado. Aside from our ears being all screwed up, I’m lucky I was able to stay on Interstate 80 rather than upside down in a cornfield.

Got the eyedrops at the ophthalmologist, so my eyes look like targets again (a wide blue outer circle, a smaller brown circle, and pupils). I don’t know what it is about that stuff but apparently it was marketed by Crystal Gayle.

Good news though, cataracts aren’t getting any worse.

Took the car today to a mechanic in Cheyenne to look for damage after the tornado; they didn’t find any.

Interesting. But the resolution is so low I have to caution against drawing too many conclusions from it. When the visual details are this scarce it’s very easy to see what you want to see.

Hate to point this out, but although Trump got the right wing Supreme Court fully enabled, Joe Biden played a big part in undercutting Anita Hill’s testimony and helping Clarence Thomas get confirmed to the court. It’s one of the reasons I was reluctant to support him.

And now it’s biting all of us on the ass, big time.

Barefoot Grin  Jun 30, 2022 • 4:16:08pm

I would say Trump should be convicted regardless, but given the lawlessness of the court and Republicans at every level and branch of government—especially SCOTUS, it should be the message of the Democrats that they will indict Trump and all of his enablers. I know this seems obvious, but the Dems are weak because they don’t do this. The media doesn’t want reasoned debate; they want blood. Now is the perfect time to give it to them, and they (Dems) need messaging discipline.

It’s our 38th anniversary today. It was 115F on our wedding day. We got married at the home I grew up in. The Reverend almost literally ran for it after the ceremony. The cake frosting melted. The bartender got drunk. He got the musician drunk. My Bestmans’ ex-girlfriend was stalking him, (was not invited) was drunk and high on cocaine. On one of her inebriated and angry trips around the block, she totaled my dads parked car and hers too.

What a start to wedded bliss. Can’t help but ponder the changing times since 1984.

State senator Patty Pansing-Brooks will be running in the general election for NE-1, after failing by several thousand votes in the special election Tuesday. Gov. Ricketts reiterates if she is elected to the US House he will appoint her replacement then call for a bill to ban all abortion in Nebraska.

As of yet, I am not aware of anyone running in the election for her seat. That said, Pete Ricketts would take advantage of the small window between the election and the next session of the legislature to get his wingnut in to overturn abortion in Nebraska.

If Pansing-Brooks loses on November 8, then Ricketts is blocked from appointing the wingnut he needs.

I wouldn’t be averse to MI-6 or the DGSE helping us out with these folks. Most Americans would go ballistic at “foreign intervention” but they ignore what is routine practice for us. Many foreigners even approved of some of our interventions (D-Day and that whole Liberation business for example.)
And it IS ok for the allies to intervene and not for Russkies, since NATO allies would be trying to save us while Russian agents and their loathsome stooges are trying to destroy us.
