Teddy's Person  Aug 13, 2022 • 3:06:00pm

Ivanka’s PR team is on it.

“Ivanka has basically dumped her brothers,” a source exclusively tells [gossip rag] OK!. “She doesn’t want to be part of the family business anymore or even the controversial family. Her future is with her husband, Jared Kushner, and her kids. They are out of politics and won’t be campaigning with her father anymore or defending him on TV.”

The Kushner’s have their billions. The Trump boys go under the bus.

My new counter-height table. I bought the top online from a place that makes tables out of recycled wood. I got the legs and swivel chairs on Amazon. My dad and I built the cabinet on the end and I attached a power strip on each side:

Well, Ivanka was always cited as the “smart one” in the Trump family (low bar to hurdle, indeed, but she clears it)……

Meradalir volcano from yesterday - the northern most vent still active built itself a little pizza oven of a cone (that by today has totally closed in.) Northwest notch of the valley now has new lava totally covering the old (2021) lava, but the eastern portion of the valley still has lobes that the new lava has yet to cover.

Near the end you can see the Geldingadalir volcano hovering several hundred feet above the current one. It’s going to take a while for the young volcano to reach that size:

Just watched Prey on Hulu. Damn, that was actually worthwhile. It isn’t gonna win an Academy Award, but if you want some very decent action with a Predator movie, it ain’t bad at all.

I watched in English the first time. I got so much more out of it with her Comanche dub. You should try that if you haven’t.

If some Proud Boy neckbeards do try to stage an organized attack on an FBI building somewhere, it won’t go well for them. I guarantee the FBI is readier for a situation like that than they are.

But that chud who did try to attack the FBI a few days ago was also trying to get others to join him. Nobody showed up, and he didn’t survive the encounter. I think that’s going to be the most common neckbeard reaction.

Reuters had no trouble identifying the terrorist yokels whose threats forced MTG’s opponent to quit the race. It should therefore be easy for federal law enforcement to identify quite a few of the goobers making threats against the FBI, Judge Rinehart, and his synagogue. They should be arrested in a series of high profile, middle of the night, no knock raids, complete with ninja suits, accompanying media, and battering rams. This is well within the law and hasn’t been done solely because of right wing sensibilities. Fuck them, war is here, let the gloves come off. If they resist, so much the better.

The radical right’s bullshit to action ratio must be the highest of any large group in human history. There are literally millions of gun humping Repugs out there, shaking with rage, flinging spittle and posting blood curdling threats at the rate of thousands per minute. Yet only a handful, perhaps a dozen, are willing to put their lives on the line and back up those threats. Thousands showed up on 1-6 only because they had it from the highest authority, Cheeto himself, that their actions had official approval and would therefore be safe.

I think it’s a mistake to be afraid of provoking them. If a bully has to back down publicly, his bullying loses power. Having declared the other side’s actions intolerable, the more they rage without taking action, the more power they lose.

Was at our local dog friendly bar for snacks today and looking at the new stage backdrop. The owner came and told us his dog had passed (he was admiring Milo as he looked a bit like the house border collie)…he said he just adopted a new puppy and talked about the guy who did the backdrop (his father was a set designer for Lucas & Spielberg).

He’s hoping to get Neil Young back because of the ‘harvest moon’ component (Neil’s played at the bar 14 times). But the unveiling will be August 26th…The Mother Hips (I bought six tickets so I’d have extras to share)…nice thing is this place is walking distance from our house.

This Newsweek story seems click baity and a lot of people are running with it.
Exclusive: Trump Raid Documents Could Reveal Informants on U.S. Payroll

In pursuing the unprecedented search of Donald Trump’s residence on Monday, the FBI was seeking to retrieve Top Secret and “compartmented” documents dealing with intelligence “sources and methods,” two federal government sources tell Newsweek—documents with the potential to reveal U.S. intelligence sources, including human sources on the American government payroll.

*could* reveal. It could reveal anything. People are running with it as *does* reveal.

102
BigPapa  Aug 13, 2022 • 7:21:22pm

One thing in that Newsweek article is pretty clear to me. The National Archives and others gave them multiple opportunities to cough all the stuff back up. They didn’t. In June they went back in and got a few more things but they probably knew what they were looking for and didn’t get them, or only got a little. Then the DOJ went quiet with Trump’s camp until Monday when they showed up. They knew.

Trump could have gotten away with another law breaking activity but his own vanity wouldn’t allow him to escape unscathed.

Personally, I’m thinking “not” - if for no other reason than he likely has amassed a veritable Everest of dirt on the whole Trump Empire and its rulers: and (“shmendrick” demeanor aside) seems very much the type to have already made sure that said dirt will avalanche down and bury various folks who won’t appreciate it should things get too hot for him….

tl;dr She is a good doctor and has absolutely awesome colleagues.

We are absolutely proud of her. I assume the mom is doing ok, though of course she must be incredibly stressed by all of this. I think there is a long road ahead if the babies survive, but Children’s Hospital Oakland does good work, so there is certainly hope.

Heh!

Years ago I had a friend who raised sheep on his farm. One day we were talking and watching the flock of sheep graze. Suddenly one of the sheep jumped a fence into the next field. And a number of other sheep followed. The friend turns to me and says “I know who is going to be on the truck to market next week”.

Hi! I am back from Shabbat.

My depressing take on all this is that Jared will be the fall guy. Ivanka will get “born again” and shove him under the bus and the Trumps will all get off while Jared goes to jail like his dad.

Then it will be the good ole Bad Times for Teh Juice.

Jared is the one who received the 2 billion dollar payoff from Prince Bonesaw. Trump provided him and Ivanka security clearances to which they were not entitled. We are in uncharted waters where a former President is the literal definition of a traitor and 10s of millions of Americans worship him, most of the GOP in House support him, and there may be 100’s or 1000’s of Americans willing to sacrifice themselves to harm those they consider enemies of their lord and master.

A Saskatchewan Amber Alert for two children has been cancelled. The children were believed to be with their mother and common-law husband (the hub is a convicted sex offender of children and vulnerable adults). Two others were also involved in taking the children.

The four people and the children were found ninety minutes later by the Meade County Sheriff at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Arrangements are being made to return the children to Saskatchewan. The adults are in the Meade County Jail.

The closest I can think of in terms of foreign espionage are Benedict Arnold and James Wilkinson. And Arnold, at least, did a lot of things in service to the fledgling US before turning traitor.

My final iteration of this code. I have now created a main class and a couple of helper classes that generate the following possible arrangements:
1. All possible permutations
2. All distinct permutations, what I call the “Mississippi” problem. Since the i’s are all the same, the s’s are all the same, and the p’s are all the same, only one instance is generated for the values in a given position. For instance, swapping of the s’s with each other doesn’t change the permutation, so I only generate one of them.
3. All possible combinations.
4. All distinct combinations.

I like to describe computer science as the branch of math that does all the things the other branches count. In this particular instance, it only computes the minimum sequences. It doesn’t generate a list and then check to see if it has done it before.

Without reading it, here is my guess:

Someone is proposing that a month-long “atmospheric river” could hit California.

I don’t like the phrase “atmospheric river” but weather forecasters began using it a few years back.

If you look at a global map of water vapor, in both hemispheres you’ll usually find streams of high-water-vapor going from the tropics into the mid latitudes, over the ocean. These things get pushed along in front of low-pressure cells.

Every few years one of those things hits California and wherever it hits has a higher than normal rainfall. Usually a few inches in a a day.

But then it passes east and quickly all the water is rained out.

My guess is that someone is saying that a stalled low-pressure system could hang off the California coast for weeks.

The lead author of the study at UCLA has a press release about it.

Climate change makes catastrophic flood twice as likely, study shows (August 12, 2022, goes to UCLA)

The last great flood in California was in 1862. Sacramento was flooded to the point that Governor Leland Stanford had to take a boat to his inauguration.

California lives with a sleeping giant — an occasional flood so large that it inundates major valleys with water flows hundreds of miles long and tens of miles across.

Motivated by one such flood that occurred in 1862, scientists investigated the phenomenon in 2010. They called it the “ArkStorm scenario,” reflecting the potential for an event of biblical proportions.

To account for the additional flood-worsening effects of climate change, scientists from UCLA and the National Center for Atmospheric Research have completed the first part of ArkStorm 2.0.

“In the future scenario, the storm sequence is bigger in almost every respect,” said Daniel Swain, UCLA climate scientist and co-author of the paper, which is published today in the journal Science Advances. “There’s more rain overall, more intense rainfall on an hourly basis and stronger wind.”

In total, the research projects that end-of-the-century storms will generate 200% to 400% more runoff in the Sierra Nevada Mountains due to increased precipitation and more precipitation falling as rain, not snow.

The researchers used a combination of new high-resolution weather modeling and existing climate models to compare two extreme scenarios: one that would occur about once per century in the recent historical climate and another in the projected climate of 2081-2100. Both would involve a long series of storms fueled by atmospheric rivers over the course of a month.

The United Nations and disability rights activists are calling out Canada for violations of the UN Declaration on Human Rights over its euthanasia law.

There are documented cases in Canada of physicians railroading disabled people into euthanasia when they don’t understand what’s happening, or failing to provide proper social services such as housing or food for the poor.

‘Disturbing’: Experts troubled by Canada’s euthanasia laws (Associated Press, August 11, 2022)

Typically things don’t go well for disabled people when health systems are overburdened (such as the ongoing pandemic) or fascists take control.

TORONTO (AP) — Alan Nichols had a history of depression and other medical issues, but none were life-threatening. When the 61-year-old Canadian was hospitalized in June 2019 over fears he might be suicidal, he asked his brother to “bust him out” as soon as possible.

Within a month, Nichols submitted a request to be euthanized and he was killed, despite concerns raised by his family and a nurse practitioner.

His application for euthanasia listed only one health condition as the reason for his request to die: hearing loss.

Nichols’ family reported the case to police and health authorities, arguing that he lacked the capacity to understand the process and was not suffering unbearably — among the requirements for euthanasia. They say he was not taking needed medication, wasn’t using the cochlear implant that helped him hear, and that hospital staffers improperly helped him request euthanasia.

It’s the white-grievance theater claim: that Tolkien was writing stories about England, or at most north-western Europe.

Except that Tolkien wasn’t.

Sure, the Shire is a fictional telling of Tolkien’s love of his is rural England, but Amazon’s RoP has nothing to do with the Shire.

The descriptions of Rohan include some items that Tolkien took from Anglo-Saxon culture, but Amazon’s RoP has nothing to do with Rohan.

With his writings on the pre-3rd Age, Tolkien is going straight into the territory of Plato and Genesis, which are definitely not concerning England.

But the problem is saying an event that hasn’t happened in 160 years (last one in 1862) will have double the chance of occurring, in a period 60-80 years in the future, when everyone reading the story will be dead….

Ironically, one of my Canadian friends found out she had lung cancer in early 2015 and it was very aggressive and not amenable to treatment. Towards the end she was having trouble breathing. Stephen Harper was prime minister at the time, and she made the decision to seek euthanasia in Switzerland because she was terrified the Harper government would force a medical establishment to keep her alive and in great pain against her will. She ended her life about 10 days before the federal election that brought Justin Trudeau to power.

I’ll note that it takes a shitton of paperwork to get approved by an assisted dying clinic and my friend was having to collect all this paperwork while dealing with an inoperable tumor. Seven years later I still think what Elizabeth did was one of the bravest things a person could do. I’m not sure I could do that. I do know that she chose to end her life on her own terms, which was a far cry different from me sitting in hospice for a week the year prior waiting for my father to die. I still think there has to be a better way, but I don’t know what…

That said, forcing people into euthanasia is abhorrent to me!

As the study notes, when the last flood hit, the population of the entire state was 500,000. Now it’s closer to 40,000,000. Additionally, that percentage goes up for every one degree C of warming.

Double the chance of occurring in eighty years also means it could occur next year. As the overflow from the Oroville Dam a couple years ago showed, infrastructure is not ready for such flooding rains or snows, and thought and investment needs to take place now for something which will most certainly happen in the future.

The estimated damage in the study from a Sacramento-sized flood would be $1 trillion, creating instant food shortages in the USA and damaging worldwide trade.

His intention was indeed to create a mythology for England, which doesn’t really have one.

Yes and no.

When Tolkien made a statement lamenting that England did not have its own mythology, by which he meant creation story, pantheon of gods, and such, it is clear that such a lament worked as a motivation for him.

But that does not mean everything he wrote has to do with England.

As time went on Tolkien became more engrossed in the problem of his Catholic beliefs melding with his imaginary world he created, that was first published in a book in The Hobbit.

IIRC, Tolkien’s first published work that had one of his imaginary personalities was way back in 1917, in a poem.

But it wasn’t until WWII, when he was penning parts of LOTR and sending them to his son in the service (in South Africa), that the larger novel took shape.

And Tolkien kept reworking, and never published, his Silmarillion. It was edited, compiled, and published by his son after death.

All of which to say, that as time went on Tolkien became more and more of a culture figure and he never stopped reworking his back-story to the LOTR.

To think Tolkien’s larger world is thus limited to England is really missing the big picture.

Tolkien wrote an essay on the “Faery” story, and his goal was to convince the publishing world that faery stories will find an audience among adults, not just children.

So Tolkien’s faery stories become more important in that light, not as some ancient history of England, but as a means by which he could sell his belief system through fiction.

We had massive flooding along the Missouri River, which broke through the levee then flooded Offutt AFB in 2012. They only just reopened the base a few weeks ago.

The problem is that there will be such a flood in California again, and the infrastructure in the state is not ready for it. Infrastructure takes time and money to improve. After a disaster is too late.

Year-on-year there isn’t much chance that the Cascadia Fault will have a major earthquake either, but planning and infrastructure improvement goes into that now for the same reason.

A multi-state fraud involving an IT company ripping off a Kansas Christian child services contractor has ended in the FBI raiding the IT company’s bank accounts in New Jersey and South Dakota.

St. Francis Ministries provides two-thirds of services in Kansas and was contracted by Gov. Ricketts to provide services in Nebraska (because they are Christians and the previous service provider is not). The contract was terminated as St. Francis was failing to meet its basic obligations. St. Francis intentionally underbid the local company providing those services. In the end, the state of Nebraska wound up paying more to St. Francis than the previous provider was charging.

The IT company owner bought a multi-million dollar home in New York City along with sloshing around money stolen by inflated billing.

Since St. Francis is a church organisation, it does not report income and expenditures, which would have allowed Kansas to see the organisation was being ripped off. A whistleblower from St. Francis brought the hinky accounting and billing to the FBI’s attention.

Currently Nebraska is trying to replace St. Francis, and a patchwork of emergency providers is in place.

After a week of outrage in Hays, Kansas’s school board after a mother objected to the elementary dress code prohibiting Satanic imagery, likening it to gangs or crime, the school board has reversed its decision. (Something something lawsuit.)

Hays BOE reverses position; satanic apparel no longer prohibited (Hays Post)

The Hays school board voted 6-1 Friday morning to reverse its prohibition on Satanism in the schools’ dress code.

The school board met in executive session for 45 minutes in consultation with its attorney and an attorney from the Kansas Association of School Boards.

About two dozen community members were present at the meeting, but there was no public comment session during the special meeting.

The revised policy unifies all the school dress code policies in the district to match board and KASB policy. It says …

“Students must dress in a manner that is not obscene, offensive or substantially or materially disruptive to the learning environment. Apparel that is sexually suggestive or that promotes violence, illegal activities, drugs, alcohol or tobacco or that is determined to be gang related is prohibited.”

Needs moar of these “rare moves.”

In rare move, school librarian fights back in court against conservative activists (NBC News, August 13, 2022)

A Louisiana school librarian is suing two men for defamation after they accused her of advocating to keep “pornographic” materials in the parish library’s kids’ section. It’s a rare example of an educator taking legal action against conservatives who use extreme rhetoric in their battle against LGBTQ-themed books.

Amanda Jones, a librarian at a middle school in Denham Springs, Louisiana, filed a defamation lawsuit Wednesday, arguing that Facebook pages run by Michael Lunsford and Ryan Thames falsely labeled her a pedophile who wants to teach 11-year-olds about anal sex.

Jones, the president of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians, was alarmed and outraged by the verbal attacks, which came after she spoke against censorship at a Livingston Parish Library Board of Control meeting. She said she’s suing the two men because she’s exhausted with the insults hurled at educators and librarians over LGBTQ materials.

“I’ve had enough for everybody,” Jones said in an interview. “Nobody stands up to these people. They just say what they want and there are no repercussions and they ruin people’s reputations and there’s no consequences.”

Gay man wins lawsuit against Catholic employer who refused to give his husband health care benefits

A federal judge has ruled that the non-profit Catholic Relief Services violated federal laws against sex discrimination when it denied health insurance benefits to the male spouse of a gay employee, rejecting their argument that they have a religious right to discriminate in employment.

The employee, identified in court papers as “John Doe” to protect his privacy, claimed that after being told that that CRS’s insurance plan provided health coverage for employees and their spouses regardless of sex when he was hired in 2016, his husband’s coverage was dropped in 2017 because same-sex spouses are not, in fact, covered.

In her decision, U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake said that exemptions to federal laws against sex discrimination for religious-based organizations do not apply in this case because Doe’s job as a data analyst was not part of the Baltimore-based organization’s religious mission.

Also a court win in Idaho.

The state of Idaho has been ordered to pay $321,224.50 in legal fees because of an anti-transgender law it passed in 2020 that had already been ruled unconstitutional.

In 2018, U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy Dale ruled that it was unconstitutional for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) to completely block transgender people from correcting the gender marker on their birth certificates. That case was brought by a transgender woman who was called a “tra**y” and a “fa***t” at a Social Security office when she showed them her birth certificate.

In 2020, state Rep. Julianne Young (R) introduced a bill to ban changes to birth certificates outside of a narrow set of exemptions. She claimed that the birth certificate is a “historical document” and that allowing transgender people to have birth certificates that reflect who they are threatens women.

Religious liberty win in North Dakota.

The board only imposed the Pledge in April on its meetings. That turned out a large portion of the town to object against it, both due to the compelled patriotism and the phrase “Under God” shoehorned in back in the Fifties. Parents argued the phrase is explicitly Christian and exclusive of other faiths and none.

The school goes back to the way they opened meetings before (let’s just get on with it).

So God smote her house along with the Christians but the Christians have no problem leaving her homeless?

I guess they have decided that she is a smite-magnet who brought misfortune on the whole neighborhood because they know that God can be terribly imprecise when it comes to smitation.

That and they have no problem praising God for deliverance whilst not mentioning their dead neighbours.

That bit from the AL GOP still supporting Trump heavily shows that the rot goes all the way down. They are going to back him despite any revelations that occur and have just backed themselves further into that corner since putting out that resolution now (instead of simply remaining silent or taking a “let’s see” attitude) is simply something else they will to unwilling to step back from since it will be another admission of error.

And never admitting an error is, if anything, the true hallmark of the modern GOP.

I was just listening to Al Franken’s podcast. This week he interviews the authors of George Floyd, Say His Name. I’m sure most of us are familiar with parts of his life through media and the trial, but the authors show how closely his family’s past and George Floyd’s own trajectory is the very story of systemic racism going back to Reconstruction and before. I say this because it really demonstrates the sickness and cruelty when Eric Trump says that there’s a separate and unfair justice for his father.

Also, I hope that Christopher Rufo gets some kind of comeuppence for his anti-CRT and anti-LGBTQ activism. I wish the Claremont Institute would slide into the ocean.

The latter is an inevitable consequence of lying for too long; you lose the compass which tells you what lies you can get away with. There are theories as to why, but one is that they begin to buy into their own lies, and fall prey for the trap of being lied to and believing the lies for too long, which is the loss of the ability to recognize truth. In fact, in many cases, the people will think truth suspect and fake.

Not that they don’t know: it’s lilkier that they simply just don’t care: RWNJ media feeds its audience what they want to hear, and if what they want to hear is Triumphalist Trumpism, that’s what they’ll get: and if their bloodthirsty fantasies get validated by a Brilliant Yuropeen Intellekshual like Sebastian Gorka, so much the better.

“…”We have some people who are pretty fanatical and radical about things,” said Gillespie County Judge Mark Stroeher. “Unfortunately, they have driven out our elections administrator, and not just her, but the staff. Everybody has resigned.”

Stroeher was sympathetic to Herrera’s frustrations in the position.

“The job had been made much more difficult than probably it should be because of some individuals who are continuing to question how they are doing things,” said Stroeher.

Herrera mentioned that, following the 2020 elections, Texas legislature had passed approximately 300 new laws regulating the voting process. This made her oversight overwhelming to manage. Herrera feels confident about the integrity of the county’s voting process.

“Texas is very safe and secure,” said Herrera.

With Herrera’s resignation and those of other members of the department, the voting process in Gillespie County is uncertain, and those who feared a fragile election system may have inspired real difficulties.

“It’s unfortunate because we have candidates that need to be elected, and we have voters who want their voices to be heard by the ballots,” said Stroeher. “I don’t know how we’re going to hold an election when everybody in the election department has resigned.”

Stroeher plans to contact the office of the Secretary of State for Texas for guidance on holding the upcoming November elections.”

We’re well past that stage. When you murder dozens of children in schools, worshipers in a synagogue, or concert goers from a hotel window, you’re there.

It is Trump whose election led to the worshipers slaughtered in a synagogue; the other acts of violence are part of our long standing gun worship and GOP allegiance to the NRA; they aren’t a sign of insurrection.

re: #173 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I am truly and profoundly sick and tired of repeating this again and again, particularly when it is — at second hand — a response to tweet-level “arguments” by white-only advocates, but one more time…the story that Tolkien started with was a mythology for England, with a creation myth and a story that explained how England got to be what it was “today.” The basis of that story was Germanic mythology, and Tolkien’s imagination. Formally, it is related to the sagas and oral histories (Germanic and Scandinavian) that Tolkien loved and that were his life’s work as an academic. You would be hard-pressed to find anything at all in his work that is not in the European tradition. (Atlantis? Plato, a European, is the sole source of the story, which probably relates to the destruction of Thera and the end of Minoan dominance. The Kalavela? Finns aren’t Indo-Europeans (a linguistic classification), but they’ve lived in Europe for as long as anyone can remember, and they look like other Europeans.) It is intellectually dishonest to pretend anything else in advancement of arguments with the whites-only crowd.

So why does it not matter that Amazon didn’t use lily-white casting for its show? Because Europeans come in all colors and have for a while now, as do Americans (country or continent).* Because there are prominent Europeans of color today and have been for centuries (e.g. Pushkin, and the Dumas family). Because “race” has no biological basis, so you can be just as European as you want to be no matter where your ancestors came from.

And I’m done with this. The people that argue for white ROP are never going to be persuaded, and your time is your own, but I’m not wasting any more of mine on it. After all, I haven’t quite finished the History of Middle Earth, volume 12, and now there’s another volume from Tolkien’s manuscripts, and I have too much else to do.**

*Mary Beard, the classical scholar, uncovered so e history of Roman Britons of color, and oh, what a row that stirred up.

** On Fairy Stories is a discussion of Tolkien’s ideas about secondary creation and its position in a created world. It may have had something to do with his decision to write a sequel to The Hobbit, but it had nothing to do with getting it published — the only problem with that was that he wanted to publish the Silmarillion at the same time.

Also, the churches claim about having gotten permission from the “Hamilton” team to do the show is (surprise!) complete bullshit.

Funny, I thought the Bible said something about not lying…

Lying for Jesus to save a buck or after the fact seems to be part of the default behavior pattern. Much like never admitting an error or declaring mea culpa and attempting to make amends.

I was watching a video this morning showing the erupting volcano in Iceland. Two people were shown having walked across fresh lava to a point where there was a active stream of lava flowing past and a relatively close distance to the volcano (hard to assess distance through a telephoto lens). The volcano itself appear to be in a lower state of activity than previously but it was still throwing up towers of molten rock. The commentor was saying, over and over, how dangerous this was and how stupid. They stood on the lava for a bit and then casually strolled back to land.

The only thing I could think was that they had to be americans.
