Never really thought I’d love a gal with whiskers, back hair, and a liplessness that makes her sound like a breathy Kissinger when she tries English: “Fater, vould you open der fwont dohr fur mich. Tank.”

Actually made a small contribution to his campaign about a week ago. Too many candidates and organizations are soliciting funds. Mainly sticking to those who have a better chance of success and higher profile. However, as I’ve said before, in a possible wave election (and who knows whether this will be one and which wave will dominate) especially in an off-year, people will vote against a party regardless of their knowledge about the candidates and their qualifications. That’s how Rostenkowski lost to a no name Republican in 1994. People were inflamed by Gingrich’s rhetoric and the GOP rants have only deteriorated since then.

Inspired by Paul Ehrlich’s alarmist best seller The Population Bomb. Ehrlich predicted famine, food rationing, and, finally, cannibalism, in the twenty-first century. Instead we have an epidemic of obesity.

The first sentence set the tone: “The battle to feed all of humanity is over.” And humanity had lost. In the 1970s, the book promised, “hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death.” No matter what people do, “nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate.”

Ehrlich, incidentally, is still alive and still sounding the population alarm, though he has admitted “that some of what he had published had not occurred,”

Slowing of population growth rates and new food production technologies have increased the food supply faster than the population.

The lie that will not die - Democrats are funding IRS more than the MARINES!

No. They aren’t. Marines get annual budget of over $50 billion. IRS got $80 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act over 10 years, which means $8 billion increase to help reduce tax evasion and improve collections and customer support to process returns faster.

$50+ billion > $8 billion.

It’s no wonder the GOP hates math. They suck at it something fierce.

It’s claimed that they are overreporting the population by 115 million (and the 115 phantom people are in the 18-30 range, making their demographics problem even worse). People I know who have spent time in China believe it’s much worse than that.

The demographics chart in China is so top heavy with seniors that their population is going to be cut in half in about 30 years.

Everything about the CCP is smoke and mirrors. Their military is a giant police force. The level of hand-wringing about Taiwan right now is massively overblown IMO.>>>

They should start with Kinmen County, which is, literally, a long rifle shot (less than two miles) from Xiamen on the *western* side of the Formosa Strait.

Yes, the current concern is that tfg has outmanuevered DeSantis (we need a good euphemism for that pos) has apparently been a topic of discussion in gqp circles that I monitor.

As I understand it, big donors and “BS Mountain” (Fox) had been trying to move to DeSantis. But apparently tfg has been able rally the fascist base. So the donors and “BS Mountain” are moving back to tfg.

Wilson had a good explainer recently and Frum had a thread on it.

My assumption is that the retreat is tactical and those predators will try again after the November elections. Particularly if there is a Blue Wave.

Thing is…people will starve, but not because there’s an absolute lack of sustenance, but because they can’t afford to eat, or because markets would rather gamble on selling those commodities at a higher price in the developed world then pay for logistics to send it down to the developed world to sell at a lower one…or just write off the spoilage.

Which makes the obesity epidemic and the hunger problem shoots from the same stem, because bad food—lacking nutrition, basically addictive in its amounts of fat, salt, and sugar—is often food that’s sold cheap but has a great profit return (because it’s made of the same small set of ingredients that are cheap)—tends to be what’s available to people who needs to eat cheap or don’t have the time and space to cook.

I am fascinated by the apparent campaign by the GOP to use the Afghanistan withdrawal anniversary to bash Biden.

Personally, I think Biden’s determination to go forward with it even the chaos involved and the hawks trying to get him to keep the money flowing to the defense industry might be the finest moment of his long career.

I absolutely have empathy for the Afghan people struggling under the renewed Taliban regime (which would not be possible without the Trump/Pompeo prisoner release). At the same time, we not only failed to help with the establishment of durable civil institutions there, we couldn’t even keep track of the various contractors we brought over there to earn hazard pay.

The Afghan people deserve our support. There can be no question that sending $300 million there EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR 20 YEARS did not significantly improve the lives of most. Time to think of a different approach to the problem.

Thank you Biden for belatedly putting an end to this debacle a year ago.

Yes, that is thread. And I agree with the commenter and her point.

I think that Frum’s argument that [Oh man, so many good euphemisms for DeSantis, I can’t choose just one!] won’t steal the rubble after he burns everything down isn’t a very convincing one. I am also not convinced that he will just give up power as Frum asserts.

He may be the least worst option on the table for the gqp at the moment. Still a fascist and way outside the bounds of a pro-democracy candidate. I agree with Wilson that the gqp is gone as a responsible organization, and disagree with Frum’s dream that it might still be saved.

I say that as a Democrat that believes the US needs two pro-democracy parties.

Republicans will never understand because their media is paid to keep them from understanding, and a bill that did the things that all nations need to do would hand them the majority.

Somewhat less horrific than the worst-case scenario is the best I hope for with right-wing idiots around who will blame sinners for the horror of climate change while entirely denying the science on the topic.

I agree with you.

Yes, the Afghan people deserve our sympathy. Yes, the 20 year occupation did not achieve our goals. (Unless those were to enrich defense contractors.)

Yes, Biden did the right thing by agreeing to honor the US commitment to withdraw. He also did a pretty good job in instituting a withdrawal after tfg set up the situation and did no planning. As Jim Wright and many other knowledgeable observers pointed out, a withdrawal is never elegant and never without human cost.

I think that Biden certainly did far better than the US did in 1975 in Vietnam.

Also, the withdrawal did wonders for us Geo-strategically. If we had stayed in Afghanistan, we would be dependent upon Putin and Pakistan for the safety of our forces there. Intervening in Ukraine to save Europe would have been impossible. We would also have been much weaker in terms of supporting Taiwan.

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

While I was in Canada I had to re-acclimate myself to something I had forgotten was the norm up there: Paying for plastic bags when checking out at a retailer or using a reusable shopping bag.

It certainly made me think more about what I was buying and how critical each item was than if I could have just loaded up as many bags as I desired like at a U.S. Wal-Mart.

Also made me think of the wingnut couch fainting that would inevitably ensue if similar policies were enacted in this country.

Personally, I like the idea of a reusable bag for cutting down on waste.

NJ has essentially a total ban on plastic bags. We’re 100% reusable bags at this point.

Miss the plastic bags from stores since we’d use them for garbage bags, instead of buying a purpose made small garbage bag. But we’ll deal with that when we get through our stockpile of bags.

” famous for reportedly being the only member of an army of 4,500 men, plus 12,000 accompanying civilians, to reach safety in Jalalabad at the end of the long retreat from Kabul. “

(Yup, officially the only one to make it back from the 1842 retreat from Kabul by over 16,000 people.
Although there may have been a few Indians that straggled in over the next few weeks. Plus under 3000 that survived to be captured.)

The problem is that the Republicans who are not as bad as Trump have no chance of winning the nomination, or even making the attempt. Maybe Cheney will try but the GOP doesn’t even consider her a Republican these days. As much as we detest her, “furrowed brow” Collins would be far better than any of the current crop of possible candidates, as would Murkowski or Charlie Baker or (maybe) Ben Sasse or (gag me with a spoon) Mitt Romney.

There are plenty of idiots who are not religious fanatics but are devout believers in the fossil fuel industry and whatever lies they promote. But it’s more than that: I had a discussion with a friend who believes that the plans are too aggressive and that people will be starving to death because with the reduction in the use of fossil fuels, there won’t be sufficient power generated from other sources to transport goods to markets or farm agricultural lands. That the problems facing Germany will be coming here.

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;

Stalin was a discrete external threat, so it was relatively easy for the US to ally with him vs. an even worse threat.

Trumpism is everything Republicans have worked toward for decades, so the intrinsic paradox in trying to work with anti-Trump Republicans vs. Trumpist loons is never going to go away.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wolfgang Petersen, the German filmmaker whose World War II submarine epic “Das Boot” propelled him into a blockbuster Hollywood career that included the films “In the Line of Fire,” “Air Force One” and “The Perfect Storm,” has died. He was 81.

Petersen died Friday at his home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood after a battle with pancreatic cancer, said representative Michelle Bega.

*if* cheney decides to run for prez as spoilers, she might do it as a libertarian, if they’ll have her.

trying for the R nom is silly, even if it gets her on the stage with the clown show - she wouldn’t last long enough in the primary process to have any effect or make a point.

alone and indie, she’d have to qualify in all 50 states - that’s a long slog.

Republicans still don’t understand what “free speech” means, and thought they had a site to freely promote terrorism on, but they were on Gab, rather than Truth Social, and while Gab has extremely low standards when it comes to user conduct, terrorism seems to be a line they don’t want to cross.

Right-wing “Christians” are upset that terrorism isn’t OK.

On Monday, federal prosecutors announced the arrest of a Pennsylvania man for allegedly threatening on Gab to kill Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents.

Gab users are apoplectic. They feel betrayed by the far-right platform and its founder Andrew Torba, who often touts his commitment to “free speech,” and has no qualms with Gab being a haven for racists and other extremists.

According to the arrest affidavit, upon request, Gab gave the FBI records including a user’s email, IP addresses, and chat logs. The FBI then used this information to identify Adam Bies of Mercer, Pennsylvania.

Bies is allegedly among the many people who took to social media to agitate against the FBI over its search of former President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida last week. The complaint asserts that he posted numerous threats against the FBI such as, “My only goal is to kill more of them before I drop,” and “If you work for the FBI then you deserve to die.”

It’s not known whether Bies has issued a plea in the case.

News of Gab cooperating with the feds launched a volley of angry posts on the platform. People likened Torba to Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, and accused Gab of betraying its users and commitment to free speech.

‘Judas’: Gab users are furious its founder handed over data to the FBI without a subpoena (Daily Dot)

Also made me think of the wingnut couch fainting that would inevitably ensue if similar policies were enacted in this country.

Personally, I like the idea of a reusable bag for cutting down on waste.

I’ve gotten much better at remembering to take my two canvas bags to the grocery when I shop. Plain, unadorned, and both are 25+ years old since they were given to me by my mother way back when.

Here’s the thing…

Trump and everyone remotely associated with him have been screaming this shit for a week, and have been giving lip service toward domestic terrorism for months before that.

And only one mullet with a nail gun showed up at a Federal Building.

It’s one too many, but seriously this hard core of a push. He’s practically begging people to start a civil war. 1 dude showed up.

it does say a lot…

Except DeSadist *IS* as bad as trump. He’s just in slicker, smarter packaging. Actually, DeSadist is everything trump is except possibly a spy. He’s more fascist then trump for sure.

Yes. My point was to list some possible candidates who would not be as bad as Trump. DeSadist is worse as is Abbott (though I don’t know if he has Presidential ambitions) and Cruz.

re: #69 lawhawk

NJ has essentially a total ban on plastic bags. We’re 100% reusable bags at this point.

Miss the plastic bags from stores since we’d use them for garbage bags, instead of buying a purpose made small garbage bag. But we’ll deal with that when we get through our stockpile of bags.

My stockpile of plastic grocery bags goes for the following:
1. A bunch went to my sister-in-law (bio prof) who needed them for something.
2. Two semi-torn up ones are cat toys for Floof Cat since they make crinkly sounds when she attacks them or drops another cat toy on them.
3. Scooped cat litter.

Robyn keeps about 6 of the reusable in the trunk of the car. I also like having to put a Looney into your cart to insure you return it and get you coin back.

One random idiot showed up because there hasn’t been time to plan yet. The militia lunatics will need time to plan their attacks and will look like the Oklahoma City terrorist attack if they succeed.

They should put that tank up for sale on E-bay. I’m sure they will get a secretive bid from Russia to acquire it!

Aren’t they planning on shutting the government down unless they get their way? Rick Scott is as evil as Trump. No funding at all for anything. Let’s not forget his plans to defund Social Security and Medicare.

The Aldi’s here in town is like that with the carts. They also charge for bags if you don’t bring your own.

It’s excellent.

I’ll second that, and the fact that I still miss Gus, KT, and a few others who used to be sane.
