We’re getting close to seeing (at least part of) the affidavit that led to the search warrant for Mar-a-Lago — or maybe not, if the judge disagrees with the redactions and gives the DOJ a chance to appeal. Anyway, this is the latest on the document everybody wants to read.

The Department of Justice has filed their proposed redactions to the affidavit used for the Mar-a-Lago search warrant. NBC’s Ken Dilanian has details and what the next steps are for the affidavit to be released to the public.

Ok. But if it is still coming totally off the books, then how is the proverbial machinist paying for it (particularly if there is no increase in taxes)?

they’re not

it’s government spending and like any government spending that doesnt have an explicitly stated offset (a specific increased tax, or other compensating spending cut) simply adds to the deficit

how we deal with the deficit is a separate problem from ‘the government is spending money in a way i dont like”

If you get involved with an Orwellian-named propaganda business run by a complete scumbag, you might just wind up a convicted felon.

NEW YORK (AP) — Two Florida residents have pleaded guilty in a scheme to peddle a diary and other items belonging to President Joe Biden’s daughter to the conservative group Project Veritas for $40,000, prosecutors said Thursday.

Aimee Harris and Robert Kurlander pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Damian Williams’ office said.

“Harris and Kurlander sought to profit from their theft of another person’s personal property, and they now stand convicted of a federal felony as a result,” Williams said in a statement.

Requests for comment were sent to lawyers for Harris, 40, of Palm Beach, and Kurlander, 58, and to Project Veritas.

While authorities didn’t identify Ashley Biden or the organization that paid, the details of the investigation have been laid out in court filings and public statements from Project Veritas.

The other issue of course, is that there are probably a lot of people that will receive relief who have paid many times the principal amount in interest. There will also be tons of folks who will only get a portion of the balance forgiven.

I’ve been seeing so much good news, that I’m starting to feel optimistic. It feels weird after the past five years.

Executives with the social media company Meta announced Thursday that they recently removed 480 Facebook and Instagram accounts, pages, and groups associated with the Proud Boys, for violating the platforms’ ban on the far-right extremist group.

The Proud Boys organization was banned by Facebook and Instagram in 2018. Meta is the parent company of both platforms.

Since the ban, Meta representatives say they have taken down 750 assets associated with the Proud Boys, including accounts, pages, groups, and events.

Many of the pages Meta recently removed represented so-called “front groups” that hid their affiliation with the Proud Boys, according to the company. They would “appear benign,” a Meta spokesperson told ABC News — but they were in fact “attempting to direct people off platform to facilitate discussion, recruitment, and organizing” for the extremist group.

Meta takes down hundreds of Facebook, Instagram accounts associated with Proud Boys (ABC News)

They’ll turn all of this around on their own tax returns by claiming bad debts losses.

What everyone should also consider is that this was in kind contributions to Trump’s campaign, which it surely is as he considers running for office, and keeping this outlet afloat just long enough is what they are hoping to accomplish to get others to pay for it.

Goldman Sachs economists Joseph Briggs and Alec Phillips ran through the numbers and gave a conclusion perhaps jarring to the plan’s supporters and detractors alike — that it won’t amount to much, saying the headlines are bigger than the macroeconomic impact.

If all borrowers eligible for the program enroll, it will reduce student-loan balances by around $400 billion, or 1.6% of GDP. That’s not a given — the economists point out that previous programs to reduce loan payments didn’t reach full enrollment.

The economists then drew on both Education Department data, as well as the Federal Reserve’s survey of consumer finances, to estimate the boost to income and consumption. Though lower-income households will see the largest proportional cut in debt payments, most of them don’t have student debt. The wealthy, on the other hand, are limited by the income thresholds attached to the relief. Middle-income households will benefit the most.

What’s the impact? Payments will fall from 0.4% of personal income to 0.3%. “This modest reduction in debt payments as a share of income implies only a modest boost to GDP. Relative to a counterfactual where debt forbearance ends and normal debt payments resume, our estimates imply a 0.1 percent point boost to the level of GDP in 2023 with smaller effects in subsequent years due to the natural maturation of student loans, as well as continued growth in nominal GDP,” they say.

There’s also an offset — the end of the student loan payment pause at the end of the year. “So while the new debt forgiveness program will boost consumption slightly, the combined effect of debt forgiveness and a payment resumption will be slightly negative,” the Goldman team writes.

Goldman Sachs has run the numbers on student-loan forgiveness. This is its assessment. (Marketwatch)

and as it was a state school, i also qualified for a state ‘scholarship’ of a whopping $250 a year because of my high school grades

As I recall that was about what a semester’s tuition cost at Indiana University in the 70’s

Time to put in a word for the Spam Museum in Austin Minnesota. Whatever you think of the product, this is one of the best special interest/promotional museums out there. At one time, the director was a high society Washington debutante but I can’t remember her name.

Personally, I am not crazy about the standard product but I do like the Spam Lite variant. Widely ridiculed by people like Jay Leno when it was introduced, this is actually pretty good, with only about 60% as much fat and calories as the regular stuff. I have nine cans of it in my emergency food stash.
All the weirdo Spam flavor variants, like Portuguese sausage and bacon, use the standard formulation, unfortunately.
All of these products are loaded with salt, though, and that should be taken into consideration. It may not be important in a survival/emergency situation, and you could just forego the fries elsewhere.
Foodies and health faddists are trained like Pavlov’s dogs to turn their noses up at stuff like this, but I am convinced you could rename Spam Musubi and pitch it as exotic Hawaiian cuisine (which it is, after all) and charge $72.50 a plate for it at high dollar snob eateries.

When I was a deputy sheriff (ca 1979-80) we learned from the all-knowing CHP training dude that Spam was the most frequently shoplifted item in convenience stores in southern California. I doubt that it still is, but makes you wonder whether operators ever put it under lock and key.

Goober theology
Reminds me of when I was about five and I thought the Bible stories we heard in Sunday School were about what was going on in heaven at the time, kind of a weekly update.

Until I took communion classes, I always wondered what’s Abraham Lincoln doing wandering around in the desert.

To be clear, the Indian women she attacked are South Asian, not Native American.

Which is unsurprising given that the attacker is reportedly from Plano. There is apparently a large percentage of people originally from the Indian subcontinent, both there and in a couple of neighboring Dallas area suburbs.

Far from the dry as hell areas in the Southwest, here in my part of the South it has been raining…and raining…and raining for days now.

We’re starting to run into all kinds of flooding issues because the storms just will not let up. Fortunately, the area around my home is not flood prone. Some of my neighbors are…not so lucky.

And there’s a 60% or more chance of rain for the next EIGHT DAYS, so says the local forecast.

Indicted Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters’ deputy, Belinda Knisley, has agreed to cooperate with investigators and testify in court against her former boss as part of a plea deal announced Thursday by prosecutors.

The deal represents a significant threat to Peters’ defense against felony charges stemming from a security breach of her county’s election system last year during a software update when election system passwords were photographed and later posted online.

Knisley, 67, pleaded guilty Thursday to trespassing, first-degree official misconduct and violation of duty, all misdemeanors. The felony counts against Knisley, who was indicted alongside Peters in March, were dismissed.

Knisley was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation and 150 hours of community service. She is also permanently barred from working in elections.

Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, a Republican, said during a plea hearing in Grand Junction that Knisley was interviewed at the attorney general’s office in Denver in June for seven hours, during which she provided information to assist in the investigation into Peters.

“Her value to us as a witness — it’s important, it’s critical,” Rubinstein said, adding that Knisley was acting at the direction of Peters in relation to the conduct that led her to face criminal charges.
