Maybe: I’m sure that there will be some GOP Congresscritter who will introduce a bill for one anyway: if only to generate another opportunity to screech “baby-killers!” at Dems/libs (and fund-raise thereby)…

ugh

Since leaving office, people have often asked me about my relationship with President Trump. I tell them I will always be grateful that he chose me to be his vice president. He was my president and he was my friend. For four years, we had a close working relationship. It did not end well. But as you have read on these pages, we parted amicably when our service to the nation drew to a close. In the months that followed, we spoke from time to time, but when the president returned to the rhetoric that he was using before that tragic day and began to publicly criticize those of us who defended the Constitution, I decided it would be best to go our separate ways.

President Trump and I may never agree on the events surrounding January 6, but I will always believe, by God’s grace, I did my duty that day, and I will always be proud of our record and the good work we did for the American people.

In four short years, we rebuilt our military, secured our border, revived our economy, unleashed American energy, and, most important of all, gave the American people a new beginning for life. The Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade righted a historic wrong by returning the question of abortion to the states and the American people. The fact that three of the five justices who joined that opinion were appointed during the Trump-Pence administration makes all the hardship we endured from 2016 forward more than worth it. Restoring the sanctity of life to the center of American law has been the calling of my life. Now our movement has the opportunity to save countless innocent lives and come alongside women facing crisis pregnancies as never before, supporting the unborn and the newborn with generosity and compassion. To have had the privilege — along with generations of pro- life champions — to have played some small role in that victory for life will be something I cherish for the rest of my days.

Weird how all toss-up seats and many red seats went totally blue this year in a historically unpopular environment for Democrats.

Assuming facts very much not in evidence (especially after seeing the election results).

It’s almost like Dems used COVID as a pretext to kill the value of the individual voter and replace them with managerial mass ballot systems.

WTF does this gibberish even mean?? Sounds like Greenwald’s blather about “new and opaque voting systems” - which are neither, of course.

The Public Image Ltd. guitarist - who was also one of the original members of The Clash - died of liver cancer at the age of 65 on Friday (11.11.22), his family and friends have revealed.

His partner, Kate Ransford, who was with the musician in his final hours along with his sister Jill Bennett and her husband, said Keith had died “peacefully, settled, cosy and loved”.

The news was first announced by writer Adam Hammond, who had been working with the musician on a history of PiL.

He tweeted: “It is with great sadness I report that my close friend and legendary Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levene passed away on Friday 11th November.

“There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.

“Keith sought to create a new paradigm in music and with willing collaborators John Lydon and Jah Wobble succeeded in doing just that. His guitar work over the nine minutes of ‘Theme’, the first track on the first PiL album, defined what alternative music should be.

WaPo had a good day today, which means it had articles I agreed with. There was one about re-establishing grizzlies in the northern Cascades. I agree with that, but have no desire to meet one. I don’t have enough “gift” links left to post them all, but here goes TMI.

Jen Rubin had a column: 7 reasons to be optimistic about the future of democracy
washingtonpost.com

1) courts have proved adept at heading off election-related shenanigans. Marc Elias said many of the rulings got no national press noise, which meant the system was working correctly.
2) massive early voting demonstrated the ability of voters to adjust to new election rules. People are becoming accustomed to the long process of counting, and Republicans mostly conceded races they lost quietly.
3) low turnout in competitive midterm contests is no longer the norm.
4) younger voters have learned to show up at midterm elections…
5) a number of “firsts” occurred. “Despite the reactionary movement that seeks to take the country back to the 1950s, the US continues to expand the definition of ‘We’ in ‘We the people.’”
6) the movement for women’s autonomy has arguable never been more energized.
7) finally, the Republican Party might finally be tiring of Donald Trump.

In sum, democracy is looking stronger than it did a week ago. And with federal and state prosecutors still at work, I’ve never been more optimistic that Trump and his cronies will face accountability for their actions. This all bodes well for the survival of American democracy.

If we don’t squeak out a win in the house and I’m not as sure of that as some others seem to be still, we will have to put up with 2 years of nothing getting done and a billion hearings on Hunter Biden’s non-existent laptop and a witch hunt against the members of the Jan 6 committee.

Oh and them playing games with the debt ceiling for the 11ty billionth time too.

Also at WaPo today:

At COP 27, an artist asks attendees to feel climate change — literally
Bahia Shehab’s “Heaven and Hell in the Anthropocene” is an immersive installation that invites visitors to think about global warming with their bodies
washingtonpost.com

Before entering the installation viewers respond to a questionnaire: One question asks participants if they would agree to limit showering to four minutes, wash only with a bar of soap and reuse a day-old towel to conserve water and limit plastic usage. At the end, participants receive a score, which sends them to a room.

Some will find themselves in a light, domed interior set at a comfortable temperature in the low to mid-70s, surrounded by nature sounds and scents of “freshness, orange blossoms,” Shehab said. Others will find a dark, claustrophobic space set around 95 degrees and reeking of decomposing fruit and hospital rooms. So far, Shehab said she has sent 537 people to “hell” and 969 to “heaven” in what she calls a “very interesting social experiment.” Later, she encourages them to visit the other room.

“We think with our bodies.”

And finally, I am going to give this one, because we are always talking about how Democrats have just left state and local elections to the Republicans, and how that handicaps the forward motion of our country.

Democrats surged to flip state legislatures, defying past GOP gains
wapo.st

If the early results hold up in states where some races remain undetermined, Democrats will not have lost control of a single legislature that they previously held, a feat not accomplished by the president’s party during a midterm election since 1934.

The victories blunted Republican plans to push further restrictions on abortion, transgender rights, school curriculums and spending, and in some states expanded Democrats’ possibilities of passing their own priorities.

The party’s unexpected legislative successes came after a new, laserlike focus on state races by both longtime operatives at places like the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), which rarely receives much help from the national party, and other relative newcomers to this lower-profile battlefield.

Anyone else rubbed wrong by what MSNBC is doing here? The Falwells are…gross and hypocritical…but they’re the above water part of the iceberg. They fucked a 20 year old in some kind cuckold scenario.

The SBC:

“Our ministries aren’t under our control, so we wouldn’t know if there was a problem with grooming children and wouldn’t have that kind of information.”

Also the SBC:

“Hey, here’s this curated list of who’s done some kid fiddling, best keep this in our back pocket in case we have to play defense.”

These are ultimately manifestations of the same phenomenon—conservatives actually believe that fucking is good if you’re a powerful man—but the latter deserves to be responded to with more vehemence.

and throwing shit at these people. literally.

Maybe it’s age, but I feel like the highlighting of individual hypocrisy just doesn’t work as rhetoric…in no small part because people quietly like the idea of using power to do what they want, but also because conservative specifically love vice signaling…but it’s also representative of the mediocrity of the press. The salacious, gossipy story gets the column inches while the systemic, creeping evil is hard to sell.

There was chirping about him being the wrong candidate, but not on an open mic in front of a crowd. The current GOP acts as a mob or gang is run.
You stay in line, do as we say, and vote the way we say or else.
Look at all the book deals from the people who were privy to just how dangerous Trump is. They said nothing, but you can buy the book and read how they were concerned.
So concerned they did nothing.
At this stage of the crime, if you still think the GOP is a political party you are actively supporting foreign interests whose designs are on weakening America any way they can.
I wrote off large parts of my acquaintances because I just had it.
I will not be a part of anything they do, because they are really not my friend or anything approaching a friend of my family.

Lady Grifter Trump is implicitly telling DeSantis: Don’t get any ideas, at least, not until 2028.

I think that Ron DeSantis is very smart. Look, he’s a young guy. There will be a lot of opportunity for him in the future, and he knows this, to run for president. And so, I think he’s probably waiting to see what my father-in-law does, and I think he’s a smart enough guy to know that it will be great to have all this support of this party — of the America First, MAGA movement, whatever you want to call it — fully behind him in 2028, than possibly fracturing it in 2024. I can tell you, those primaries get very messy and very raw. We’ve experienced that before. So wouldn’t it be nicer for him, and I think he knows this, to wait ‘til 2028.

Until my daughter got really tall, I had not actually noticed how many tall women there really are. They are almost always beautiful. So are short women. The in-between ones aren’t bad either, come to think of it. Let’s face it: I just like women. A lot, even at my advanced age (I am old but not dead). Incels probably hate me.

Yes, the NFL does all it can to turn me away. But the former newspaper sports editor in me keeps me coming back. And just when you think you have seen EVERYTHING…

After stopping Minnesota inside the 1, all Buffalo had to do was run a QB sneak to move the ball forward a couple of times. But Buffalo fumbled the ball and Minnesota recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to take the lead. The only other time I have witnessed this was in the early-era Tom Cruise movie “All the Right Moves.” The Vikings are now 8-1 and somehow keep winning close games.

This story reminds me a little of how Dick Cheney rose to the occasion in the fall of 1965 and little Liz apparently started life as a draft dodging gimmick.

Dick was first eligible for the draft in 1959 when he turned 18. Like other privileged youth of the time, he went to college and got student deferments. By 1965 he had graduated and had lost those deferments.
He had gotten married in the meantime though and Selective Service was not drafting married men. By that fall things were heating up in Vietnam. On October 6th, 1965, Selective Service announced that they would start taking married men who did not have children.
Liz was born nine months and two days later.

It won’t come to that. I bet that shortly after Trump announces Tuesday, DeSantis makes the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Largo and endorses Trump, then waits to see if he implodes. If not, DeSantis is young, he can wait until 2028. If he tries to take on Trump, Trump will destroy him.

Last month an amateur rocket builder achieved what I believe to be a world record for amateur rocketry.

2-stage rocket launched from Black Rock Desert in Nevada. 293,488 ft apogee.

They exercise their 1st amendment rights outside her house because, in a clear violation of the constitution, they are not allowed to exercise them outside the “supreme” court.

Craps. I’ve been seeing that Lake needs around 56% from the rest of the votes to win. That’s too close for comfort. But there’s 90k total supposed to be coming in so lets hope others are better for Hobbs.

All I can say is that if it were PA it looks like Ms Hobbs has a narrow lead. Since the difference is more than 10K there would be no automatic recount. I hope Ms Hobbs can hold onto and expand her lead.

Yeah. I think this is the 97k that came in so that may be it for tonight.

Seems like Lake needed a better number than she got, although very good for her. I’m sure there’s a lot of calculators firing off right now. Pima county has 40k votes left which could wipe out this recent Lake gain.

Just to note that my old picketing buddy David Gerard has been churning out nearly daily articles regarding the FTX explosion. He says he hasn’t gotten much sleep.

FTX should prove that crypto is not just “not ready for primetime” but a first-class example of how crypto is a scam and Ponzi scheme that Charles Ponzi could only dream about.

(Off to go shopping and charge up my Pasmo card. That thing is so handy.)
