Since leaving office, people have often asked me about my relationship with President Trump. I tell them I will always be grateful that he chose me to be his vice president. He was my president and he was my friend. For four years, we had a close working relationship. It did not end well. But as you have read on these pages, we parted amicably when our service to the nation drew to a close. In the months that followed, we spoke from time to time, but when the president returned to the rhetoric that he was using before that tragic day and began to publicly criticize those of us who defended the Constitution, I decided it would be best to go our separate ways.
President Trump and I may never agree on the events surrounding January 6, but I will always believe, by God’s grace, I did my duty that day, and I will always be proud of our record and the good work we did for the American people.
In four short years, we rebuilt our military, secured our border, revived our economy, unleashed American energy, and, most important of all, gave the American people a new beginning for life. The Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade righted a historic wrong by returning the question of abortion to the states and the American people. The fact that three of the five justices who joined that opinion were appointed during the Trump-Pence administration makes all the hardship we endured from 2016 forward more than worth it. Restoring the sanctity of life to the center of American law has been the calling of my life. Now our movement has the opportunity to save countless innocent lives and come alongside women facing crisis pregnancies as never before, supporting the unborn and the newborn with generosity and compassion. To have had the privilege — along with generations of pro- life champions — to have played some small role in that victory for life will be something I cherish for the rest of my days.

The news was first announced by writer Adam Hammond, who had been working with the musician on a history of PiL.
He tweeted: “It is with great sadness I report that my close friend and legendary Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levene passed away on Friday 11th November.
“There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.
“Keith sought to create a new paradigm in music and with willing collaborators John Lydon and Jah Wobble succeeded in doing just that. His guitar work over the nine minutes of ‘Theme’, the first track on the first PiL album, defined what alternative music should be.

Jen Rubin had a column: 7 reasons to be optimistic about the future of democracy
washingtonpost.com
1) courts have proved adept at heading off election-related shenanigans. Marc Elias said many of the rulings got no national press noise, which meant the system was working correctly.
2) massive early voting demonstrated the ability of voters to adjust to new election rules. People are becoming accustomed to the long process of counting, and Republicans mostly conceded races they lost quietly.
3) low turnout in competitive midterm contests is no longer the norm.
4) younger voters have learned to show up at midterm elections…
5) a number of “firsts” occurred. “Despite the reactionary movement that seeks to take the country back to the 1950s, the US continues to expand the definition of ‘We’ in ‘We the people.’”
6) the movement for women’s autonomy has arguable never been more energized.
7) finally, the Republican Party might finally be tiring of Donald Trump.
In sum, democracy is looking stronger than it did a week ago. And with federal and state prosecutors still at work, I’ve never been more optimistic that Trump and his cronies will face accountability for their actions. This all bodes well for the survival of American democracy.

At COP 27, an artist asks attendees to feel climate change — literally
Bahia Shehab’s “Heaven and Hell in the Anthropocene” is an immersive installation that invites visitors to think about global warming with their bodies
washingtonpost.com
Before entering the installation viewers respond to a questionnaire: One question asks participants if they would agree to limit showering to four minutes, wash only with a bar of soap and reuse a day-old towel to conserve water and limit plastic usage. At the end, participants receive a score, which sends them to a room.
Some will find themselves in a light, domed interior set at a comfortable temperature in the low to mid-70s, surrounded by nature sounds and scents of “freshness, orange blossoms,” Shehab said. Others will find a dark, claustrophobic space set around 95 degrees and reeking of decomposing fruit and hospital rooms. So far, Shehab said she has sent 537 people to “hell” and 969 to “heaven” in what she calls a “very interesting social experiment.” Later, she encourages them to visit the other room.
“We think with our bodies.”

And finally, I am going to give this one, because we are always talking about how Democrats have just left state and local elections to the Republicans, and how that handicaps the forward motion of our country.
Democrats surged to flip state legislatures, defying past GOP gains
wapo.st
If the early results hold up in states where some races remain undetermined, Democrats will not have lost control of a single legislature that they previously held, a feat not accomplished by the president’s party during a midterm election since 1934.
The victories blunted Republican plans to push further restrictions on abortion, transgender rights, school curriculums and spending, and in some states expanded Democrats’ possibilities of passing their own priorities.
…
The party’s unexpected legislative successes came after a new, laserlike focus on state races by both longtime operatives at places like the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), which rarely receives much help from the national party, and other relative newcomers to this lower-profile battlefield.
Yesterday, I had the ac on.

Also the SBC:

These are ultimately manifestations of the same phenomenon—conservatives actually believe that fucking is good if you’re a powerful man—but the latter deserves to be responded to with more vehemence.
and throwing shit at these people. literally.
Maybe it’s age, but I feel like the highlighting of individual hypocrisy just doesn’t work as rhetoric…in no small part because people quietly like the idea of using power to do what they want, but also because conservative specifically love vice signaling…but it’s also representative of the mediocrity of the press. The salacious, gossipy story gets the column inches while the systemic, creeping evil is hard to sell.

“…The National Party was founded in 2016 by Cork man Justin Barrett, who was once a leader of Youth Defence, an extreme anti-abortion group prominent in the 1990s.
The group has no elected representatives.
It is staunchly anti-immigrant and had strong opposing views to the Covid vaccination and lockdown rules.
It was also included in a recent country report by the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, who claimed they are a ‘far-right hate and extremist group’.
A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 1.13pm following “reports of an incident on Lough Shore Road in Enniskillen involving a large number of people”.
Full Steam Ahead: Lara Trump Insists There’s Never ‘Been a Better Time’ for Fmr. President to Launch 2024 Bid, Warns DeSantis to ‘Wait Until 2028’ https://t.co/075YIkGPrp
— Mediaite (@Mediaite) November 13, 2022
Lady Grifter Trump is implicitly telling DeSantis: Don’t get any ideas, at least, not until 2028.
I think that Ron DeSantis is very smart. Look, he’s a young guy. There will be a lot of opportunity for him in the future, and he knows this, to run for president. And so, I think he’s probably waiting to see what my father-in-law does, and I think he’s a smart enough guy to know that it will be great to have all this support of this party — of the America First, MAGA movement, whatever you want to call it — fully behind him in 2028, than possibly fracturing it in 2024. I can tell you, those primaries get very messy and very raw. We’ve experienced that before. So wouldn’t it be nicer for him, and I think he knows this, to wait ‘til 2028.
It never occurs to these feral weirdos that maybe their crappy talking points are being deleted because they suck.

Until my daughter got really tall, I had not actually noticed how many tall women there really are. They are almost always beautiful. So are short women. The in-between ones aren’t bad either, come to think of it. Let’s face it: I just like women. A lot, even at my advanced age (I am old but not dead). Incels probably hate me.

Yes, the NFL does all it can to turn me away. But the former newspaper sports editor in me keeps me coming back. And just when you think you have seen EVERYTHING…
After stopping Minnesota inside the 1, all Buffalo had to do was run a QB sneak to move the ball forward a couple of times. But Buffalo fumbled the ball and Minnesota recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to take the lead. The only other time I have witnessed this was in the early-era Tom Cruise movie “All the Right Moves.” The Vikings are now 8-1 and somehow keep winning close games.

This story reminds me a little of how Dick Cheney rose to the occasion in the fall of 1965 and little Liz apparently started life as a draft dodging gimmick.
Dick was first eligible for the draft in 1959 when he turned 18. Like other privileged youth of the time, he went to college and got student deferments. By 1965 he had graduated and had lost those deferments.
He had gotten married in the meantime though and Selective Service was not drafting married men. By that fall things were heating up in Vietnam. On October 6th, 1965, Selective Service announced that they would start taking married men who did not have children.
Liz was born nine months and two days later.
