Mrs. Fish and I powered through The Witcher: Blood Origin, a spin-off series from Netflix that serves as a prequel to both the original TV series and the games from whence the whole universe came. It was a decent budget entry in the fantasy genre. I felt some of the characters were quite compelling, the graphics weren’t terrible, the storyline was basic but not the worst, and the action was gratifying. There is a bit of sexual content, but tastefully done, not gratuitous like an HBO show. The hardcore fans seem to be a bit upset because it upends a core part of Witcher lore, and also undoubtedly because of the diversity in the cast, though I deeply appreciated some of the casting decisions and felt that characters and actors were well matched in general.

Interesting thread on the military situation in Ukraine.

Additionally, the mud is finally beginning to freeze, increasing Ukrainian mobility. The Ukrainians have also been training up a set of reserve forces.

However, the Ukrainians are very concerned about the 200,000 Russian mobilized troops that have been training in Russia. And are aware that there is likely to be another wave of Russian mobilization in the late winter. So the question is how much of the Ukrainian reserves do they commit to an offensive and how much do they keep to ward off probable Russian offensives.

There are enough people here interested in history and/or airplanes that I thought I’d repost this image that I saw at a photo website I frequent. It’s the Curtis P-36A on display at the National Muesum of the USAF. I have always loved that they present their display as Lt. Philip Rasmussen in his pajamas getting into his P-36A to fight at Pearl Harbor.

I powered through it myself since I have been stuck isolating all week. Gotta say, I was not impressed. No problem with any of the casting, they all did reasonably well with what they were given The story was just very …meh… and some of the attempts at CG were just painful. They really did upend a major part of the Witcher lore as far as I can tell for no great reason.

It was like someone said, “let’s create a story about what brought about the conjunction”. And someonone else was like, “There were no Witchers before the conjunction, can we do a Witcher story without a Witcher?” And some genius was like “Easy fix”

Seems like something like the Witcher that has so many existing books and games and lore to pull on they could find a story to tell that doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Just my opinion.

Ben’s ignorance of mysteries is astounding. You can decide you don’t like the film for various reasons. ETA: But his rationale was ridiculous.

A girl friend and I watched the film last night; she stopped it several times because she was confused about the plot line. But when it was over, her comment was “Oh, that was an Agatha Christie story, updated to reflect modern times”.

There was this Politifact rating from last year: politifact.com

Obviously the money he scammed from the government far outweighs his salary, but technically he may have “kept” his word. Money, of course, is fungible so this may be just standard sleight of hand.

re: #26 darthstar

So am I supposed to accept the Witcher as my personal lord and savior or not? These documentaries are so confusing.

Part of the reason that fandom is so upset is that the show runner was promising since day one to be faithful to the books and the lore. The first season deviated in a few areas, but was still a fairly accurate adaptation of the books. The second season was a fun fantasy romp, but bore little resemblance to the books aside from 2 or 3 episodes, and changed some things very significantly. Haven’t seen Blood Origins yet, so can’t comment.

Additionally, a former writer from the show was giving an interview recently on an unrelated topic, and made a comment about adaptations in general, that writers should be familiar with and respect the source material. He followed that up by saying that several writers on the Witcher were actively hostile to, and mocking the source material.

Yes, it’s fiction. But these books have been around since the 90s, and the computer games since 2007. They have a huge devoted fanbase.

The show runner could have chosen to do a show inspired by The Witcher books, or located in the Witcher universe, and that would have been fine. But she stated that she wanted to do a faithful adaptation.

This is sort of like a show runner saying seriously and repeatedly that they wanted to do an Abraham Lincoln historical documentary, and then releasing Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

re: #45 JC1

That’s an apt summation. And like, I get that when you buy the rights to make a show like this, you have the rights and you can do with it what you want. But it’s a very bad look when you make promises and then do exactly the opposite of what you promised. And in that sort of circumstance, I agree with dragging the producers over it.

There’s a certain level of caching involved in something at Twitter’s scale. It’s possible that there are systems looking at the incoming post and saying, “The core API threw back an error last time this was sent to us, so we’re going to send back an error again,” until eventually the cache expires and it actually tries sending it to the core API again.

So I guess our current constitution will be out the window after this “Civil War” for that to happen. I guess there will be a new constitution after the “Civil War” with just the parts they like. And anyone that goes against that constitution will be executed, because you can’t have people going against the constitution. Even though it was people that went against our constitution that created this new constitution. It makes the head wobble.

Most responses to Elon’s tweet are highly critical, calling him a Russian asset and saying that he is tanking Tesla stock. Dmitry did tweet: “Many come up with futuristic hypotheses, as if competing to single out the wildest, and even the most absurd ones. Here’s our humble contribution.” Musk fans are claiming that the thread is funny and that Musk opponents have no sense of humor — after all it was described as “absurd”.

The only thing he predicted that might plausibly happen is that Northern Ireland could join the Republic of Ireland. I suppose UK rejoining EU is not totally far-fetched.

It’s interesting to see a review in a non-bicycle magazine. This guy was comparing the first Trek to a piece of junk shaped like a bicycle that he got at Wal Mart, or could have. The second one was a motorcycle. Maybe the first one was too, I didn’t find out. Bikes on trails that hikers can use should not go 20 MPH.

cnbc.com
The electrical engineer, who’s now 73, tells CNBC Make It the dream began when he saw an airplane boneyard on TV when he was 15 years old. He decided he wanted to live in one.

Bruce Campbell paid $25,800 for 10 acres of land in Hillsboro, a suburb of Portland, Oregon.

After months of searching … a Boeing 727 200-passenger jetliner that was 1,066 square feet and weighed around 70,000 pounds. It was found in Greece and is a part of American history … sort of.

Campbell paid $100,000 for it, and the plane was flown from Greece to Oregon to prepare it for him to take ownership. Once the aircraft was ready, it was towed to Campbell’s land through the streets of downtown Hillsboro. That process included removing the engines and other elements that make it so the plane can never fly again. It cost a total of $120,000.

Now, Campbell spends his time restoring old computer systems, fixing different electrical systems on the plane, and letting people come over and tour his aircraft.

you’re talking about the cheap seats, as well. premium seats for the big name acts are easily passing 5 grand. Obviously, if you have the dough, 5 large is tip money at the high end strip club after the show but having tickets priced at that level simply opens the headroom for more modestly price tickets that regular people would normally buy but are now being priced out of those seats.

George Santos Finally Speaks: I WILL Be Sworn In

thedailybeast.com

George Santos, the Republican Congressman-elect from Long Island caught in a web of fabrications and self-described “resume embellishments,” spoke for the first time since a New York Times investigation brought much of his purported candidate backstory into question.

“I’m gonna look through and see everything, and just like they nitpicked at me, now it’s gonna be my time to nitpick at both journalists who made it their mission to slander me across this country and across the world, and let’s see what happens at the end,” Santos said. “But the one thing is, I will be sworn in, I will take office, I will be able to be an effective member of the legislator [sic.] in the soon-to-be 118th Congress…”

Santos also gave a vague apology “if I disappointed anyone by resume embellishment,” but did not elaborate beyond that.

Also on Monday, the congressman-elect admitted to The New York Post that he hadn’t been truthful about his work and education background—copping to not having ever worked “directly” for Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, or graduated from Baruch College, as he had previously claimed.

Still, Santos insisted, “we do stupid things in life … I’m not a criminal.”

Well George, you are a Republican and a whole bunch of them are crooks that you choose to hang around with…

Speaking of frauds, my wife and I were the victims of ordering from one of the so-called “ghost kitchens” on Doordash. It was Christmas and we didn’t have much of an option, but we had no idea that Doordash (and Uber, Grubhub, and Postmates) allow scam companies to cycle through inedible offerings like this. The scam is:

1. Open dozens of restaurants under various cuisines.
2. Provide the same food no matter what, banking on mass numbers to cover the fact that you don’t match the menu.
3. Once the place had enough 1 star reviews, close it and open some more.

Turns out, this place has SEVENTY SIX “restaurants” on my local Doordash, and is run by a guy who raped a 14-year-old. Since then, he opened this scam business and is partnering with a formerly crooked cop.

Again, child rapist. Multiple fake restaurants. Inedible fake food. Doordash doesn’t care.

My wife and I spent the day sleuthing this operation. So this is just a big beware. If you order anything from one of those apps, be sure to Google their address.
