Israel to open 3 aid corridors following Biden’s call with Netanyahu

POLITICS
Israel to open 3 aid corridors following Biden’s call with Netanyahu
By Kathryn Watson

Updated on: April 4, 2024 / 7:14 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Israeli government approved the opening of three aid corridors that were specifically requested by President Biden in a Thursday call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, CBS News has learned.

Mr. Biden told Netanyahu that the Israeli strike that killed seven aid workers in Gaza was “unacceptable,” and warned that U.S. policy toward the conflict going forward will depend on Israel’s actions to relieve the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the White House said.

The Erez Crossing in northern Gaza, which has not been open since the start of the conflict, is slated to be opened. The Port of Ashdod will be opened for humanitarian deliveries, and aid trucks from Jordan will be allowed to traverse Israel into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom border crossing, CBS News has learned.

The two leaders spoke for the first time since Monday’s deadly strike that killed workers from the World Central Kitchen, a charity that has worked to deliver food aid in Gaza. One American was among the dead. Mr. Biden told Netanyahu that “the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable,” the White House said in a summary of the conversation.

Mr. Biden said on Tuesday that he was “outraged and heartbroken” by the deadly strike, which prompted international condemnation. Israeli officials have said the strike was unintentional and a mistake.

The president “made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers,” the White House said. “He made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps. He underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the prime minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home.”

re: #3 🐈 Crush White Christian Nationalism 🐈

I’m starting to see reports that

1. Biden announced that Israel is investigating the airstrike. “That investigation must be swift, it must bring accountability, and its findings must be made public,” the president said.

2. The President of Israel has directly contacted and personally apologized to Jose Andres of WCK.

3. The Israeli Army Chief of Staff:

a. Has issued a formal apology to the WCK.

b. Has formally reprimanded (ie blamed) the head of IDF Southern Command, the commander of the division responsible for the drones, and the commander of the brigade that ran the drones.

c. Has relieved the 2nd in command of the brigade and the brigade officer responsible for fire support.

d. I strongly suspect that the battalion commander, the battalion staff, the company commander and those who actually ran the drone are being investigated very thoroughly as we speak. I also strongly suspect that they are having an absolutely miserable time right now.

Just saw a commercial that made me laugh, something that’s pretty rare with commercials. The one for Consumer Cellular where an operator is answering a call, and goes, “OH, this is a butt dial!” and she sounds so delighted when she says it I had to guffaw loudly.

It cracked me up too!

And it’s such a shared experience these days.

I’m trying to imagine how I could describe a “butt dial” to myself from 1970, 1980, or even 1990.

They’re investigating the hell out of this. Would have even if it hadn’t been under these particular terrible circumstances and with pressure from Washington - someone fked up big-time (if it’s a case of crappy communication within Southern Command then it wouldn’t be the first time; left unchecked, small screw-ups eventually pave the way to big screw-ups)

Goddammit.

Biden needs to stop treating the Netanyahu situation as normal geopolitics. It’s gone past that point, well into war crimes territory.

We need to remember that underneath everything, Israel is still a nuclear power, but there’s still a lot of leverage Biden could use to get Netanyahu to stop the wholesale killing and destruction. This is not the way to defeat extremists like Hamas.

Israel can not defeat Hamas on its own. This requires a coordinated effort with other parties in the region, but it looks as though Beebee is determined to burn down all those bridges on his own. That is something that he can do, and it will take a coordinated effort to stop him.

Suspend offensive military aid as long as assaults on civilians in Gaza continues. It’s already a lopsided war without US putting its thumb on the scale. Continue to provide Patriot defense for “Iron Shield” as that’s a defense weapon. Don’t give them another artillery shell or JDAM while they’re using them on civilians.

Well what is going on in Maine

Republican legislator defends Nazis! 😵‍💫

Republican state lawmaker Laurel Libby stood up on the Maine House floor to support the Second Amendment rights and right of freedom of association of neo-Nazis in the Pine Tree State. Rep. Libby, strongly opposing a bill that would place a ban on paramilitary activity or groups working to cause civil disorder, on Wednesday called the legislation “unconstitutional.” 26 states currently have similar laws.

Neo-Nazi groups have been popping up in Maine. The bill Libby spoke against was in response to neo-Nazi events and issues over the past year.

“Let’s talk about the Nazis,” Libby says in a clip (below) posted by the Maine House Democratic Campaign Committee. “I would like to know what they did that was illegal. I would like to know what they did, in detail if folks would like to share, that was wrong, that infringed on another person’s right.”

“Holding a rally, and even holding a rally with guns, is not illegal,” Libby noted.

“We don’t have to like what said Nazis did,” Libby also said, according to Spectrum News. “We don’t have to like what they stand for. We don’t have to agree with their positions. We don’t have to think well of them. But you know what we do have to do? We have to protect their First Amendment right to free speech and association.”

re: #23 Ace Rothstein

Maybe they did it on purpose.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

I’m gonna go on a limb and guess that you’re not familiar with the nature of IDF service. To put it simply: to suggest “they did it on purpose”, given said nature and operational structure, is to effectively accuse dozens of people - many of them unrelated conscripts from separate units with different backgrounds and politics (most of those in tech units like the drone units are Israel’s “liberal elitists”, for example) and at multiple stages - of coordinated murder that could not be concealed and done while violating state laws, military laws, and standing orders. People who, for the most part, would also be aware of the ramifications, not just for themselves but in terms of harm to their commands, to the state and more.

Now, could an individual in the chain have acted to cause this deliberately at some point? Sure. However, given the structure in question, it would be next to impossible for such a thing to not be revealed within a really short period of time. Had someone done this on purpose, we’d already know - if only cause lots of people along the chain of operations would have been pointing fingers and screaming the fact at the top of their lungs to save their own skins. The IDF has happily punished and locked up perps for lesser offenses, and quickly, especially when they were are also bad to its image. And this is as bad as it gets.

I can hold a C on the trumpet for 43 seconds, at the end of 25 minutes of practice. But the breathing practice is killing me. The song has marks every two measures where I’m supposed to take a quick breath at the end of one note before the second. Sometimes, I need to exhale because all the air I remaining is stale. I think I knew how to do this 35 years ago when i played clarinet.

Exactly.

Anyone who has been in any military ever knows how things get. FUBAR and SNAFU (fucked up beyond all recognition & situation normal, all fucked up) have existed as acronyms in English (IIRC) since before WWII for a reason.

Now, there is a culture in the highest elements of the current government in Israel that has cultivated a denigration and depreciation of the value of anyone in Gaza and the West Bank. That is well understood by the troops and it influences their actions but it is not directing their actions. They still control - still choose - their own actions.

They did not explicitly set out to murder. But they didn’t really care who was in that convoy either. That also can be construed as a war crime and that is also what needs to change.

Twitter experience from my Home Page

1. Under “Following” tab — posts from sane people
2. Under “For you” tab — primarily MAGAts But TBF, these are probably accounts I linked to previously because others posted comments illustrating how terrible these people are.

As I said earlier today, until there is a winner among social media platforms to succeed Twitter, I’m retaining my account there.

Waiting for these assholes to go after flu vaccines. Most of the current vaccines are created in fertilized chicken eggs (about 1 shot from each each). So something like 80 million fertilized eggs in the US are destroyed for a season’s flu vaccine. By their logic, these vaccines are immoral. Likely they will claim any outbeak of bird flu in humans (vaccines against bird flu cannot be made in fetilized chicken eggs because they kill the embryo) is a sign from God.

There are also vaccines now being made by mammalian cell culture which should be okay. But who knows.

re: #27 Charles

I think Biden recognizes the complexity (ie nuclear weapons with Iran/Hezbollah at the ready) and is doing the best thing - seen to be dragged by the people (including Israeli citizens) into dropping the hammer. Realpolitik vs geopolitics. And Bibi will be surprised how fast that drops.

So solve this, Biden needed to maneuver Bibi into a dangerous position. If Biden moved too fast, he would have lost in the end, Bibi would have gotten more public support, etc. There is no solution with Bii still in poser. Biden has waited until we now see daily protests in front of the PM house, we see the opposition leader (who is necessary for Bibi to keep power) calling for a Sept elections, we see members of the IDK having hunger strikes in solidarity to the Palestinian people, etc. Bibi’s position in the polls is so much lower than it was 5 months ago.

Realize the Biden, of any President since perhaps GHW Bush, understands how tragic every life lost in war is, the impact each death has. I imagine he wanted to act much sooner (and maybe he could have, who knows for sure.). But I do have confidence he is not being blinded by loyalty to Bibi. He has put in place the path for Bibi’s removal. Bibi I think finally realizes the trap Biden has in place (he had been blinded by his belief in American support at all costs). But I hope it might be too late for him to survive as PM.
Who knows what a damaged RWNJ might do.

I bring this up every time but Biden has a plan for the ME future which is the first one I have seen with real potential for making the world better. The

I think it’s a pain because Israeli aid is budgeted and presidents only have so much control over that. Plus, it wouldn’t stop Israel immediately; think of how much Ukraine has been continuing without Republican support. What if Netanyahu takes it as a sign that he must move faster and lay waste to more stuff/people?

Definitely not a situation I would want to be in, especially with Hamas continuing to attack Israel.

I think that we lived through it here 2016-2020. And I like to think that the high level corruption did not influence too many of us into a life of crime. Of course I have been wrong before.

I have a question for you. You were in Germany during the Cold War. Did anyone ever talk with your unit, or even did you talk about it among yourselves. About what you would do if a Warsaw Pact tank or anti-tank missile team was shooting at you while they were hiding in a German building known to be occupied by civilians?

My experience was the expectation that the environment would be permissive.

That is why I think Biden can only move forward with Israelis leading here. It would not work with the American President seeming to use undo leverage by cutting off weapons. It takes time to empower that but it is telling to me that he has had the head of the opposition parties comne to the WH. Watch what Bernie Gantz does. He has called for Sept elections that Bibi poo-poohed. If Gantz takes his party out of the war coalition, now using not only the war but Biden’s comments, that impacts Bibi’s government. Biden only needs 5 people out of Bibi’s coalition to be put under pressure to bolt and the government falls. How many of those would cave now with pressure from the US, seeing Bibi in such a weak position? Biden now has the leverage to legitimately threaten Israel’s weapon procurement.

I hope so.

Or…kicks up a shooting war (with nukes?) with Iran? Daring the US to stop weapon sales in such a situation?

It would have been very permissive and I hate thinking about that scenario. The only reason I don’t know how many would have died from us is how few would have been left after the nuclear, chemical and very possibly biological weapons being used in the early 80’s in middle Europe…

Yet they hammered us, monthly, about not obeying illegal orders. About not doing the wrong thing. About being better than what They had been in WWII and We had been in The ‘Nam (though they _NEVER_ said that name even though the lessons were obvious to anyone). The Army in 1983 was in a damn strange place. I only understood just how bad crazy it really was when I got back to the states and got out of active duty and about 6 months later in a fit of boredom joined the National Guard.

We went to the nearest training post. All day we did normal training. Then that night? Out came a half barrel, a bonfire, and it was a fucking frat party just with out the sorority chicks. I was deeply shocked. Even the stoners on active didn’t party like those senior NCOs.

Things were changing, though. A year later, no more parties in the field.

Less than a decade later I watched a half dozen good troops end up in the stockade over less than a lid of pot because an ambitious 1LT wanted to make a name. He did but not like he hoped, thankfully. “Health & welfare” my ass. I didn’t smoke since I was into alcohol, but didn’t give a rats fuck if people did as long as the job was done.

Finding the balance has always been the bitch in this.

Yup, I remember many of the same things.

One of the more memorable was the Sunday morning drill after the St Patrick’s Day Saturday night libations. The uniforms were green, the faces were green and so was the throwup in the bathrooms.

By that point I was older, had a wife, house, and civilian job, and was no longer into partying.

Heh, when the Battalion XO needed people for the surprise drug test, the very first person he volunteered was O3 me. Because he knew I was going to be clean. I did not disappoint him. I guess that I am _really_ boring.

Bob Newhart is still with us. He’s 94.

My parents, good Rockfeller Republicans, turned me on to Newhart with his Button-Down Mind LPs from the early 60s. (They also gave me a love of Tom Lehrer (having both his self-published albums), the Limeliters, Odetta, and the Weavers). My father also talked about how Funny Andy Griffith was, especially a routine called “What it Was, Was Football”.

Now I knew ANdy purely from the Andy Griffith SHow which I found mostly boring. So I did not really listen much to my father’s accolades. Then, one day, he came hopme from K-mart with a whole bunch of radio compilations, one of which had his routine.

Andy Griffith Football Story from 1953

I laughed my ass off. Made me appreciate my father’s opinion much molre.
