Just letting the waves of irony wash over me.

Thanks for this informative post. I think it would help the readers here to know if "Gazeta.ru" is a reliable source of information.

It's a mainstream outlet. See e.g. [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Note that this item does not depend on gazeta.ru, there are numerous sources covering this, as well as primary sources, such as this forum where Maslov discussed the situation (although he already "emptied" the posting, the screenshot of which can be seen above):

This incident could be dismissed as fluctuation of aether, if not for the fact that it fits in the pattern of existence of these proto-fascist organizations (yes, I don't think they're fascist per se - yet). For example, a year or two ago MGER posted a Holocaust-denying article on its site. It was in the "given [insert any primitive HD canard here] why don't we have a right to learn more?!?!?1?" style, more of a transparent insinuation than a clear statement. When the Russian bloggers noticed it, it was quickly deleted, but nobody's head rolled, no apologies were issued.

This is the type of people who are attracted to these orgs (along with pure opportunists and common amoebas).

re: #4 Sergey Romanov

Out of curiosity I'm seeing signs that many of these youth groups are now also Russian Orthodox, and tend to identify with the pan slav and pan serbian orthodox movements as well, are you seeing that as well? (thinking of the interrupted nationalist bomb plot the other day...)

Absolutely. And it's been going on for some time. "Nashi" have an official action named "We call ourselves Orthodox [Christians], but we should rather be such." During such actions they give out small crosses as well as give short lessons on Orthodox Christianity. Don't ask me how this is supposed to mesh with their supposed inclusiveness. There is a whole "Pravoslavnyj korpus" ("Orthodox [Christian] corps") of "Nashi" run by Boris Yakemenko (bro of the more well-known Vasily), who, judging by his LJ, is a conservative nut. They're also certainly pro-Serbian, and I don't necessarily mean pro-Serbia-as-it-is-now (although that too).

E.g.:

Unusual performance of "Nashi" was held in Moscow

An unusual event took place today at the walls of the U.S. embassy in Moscow. Activists of the youth movement Nashi, outraged by death of former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic, launched the exhibition of the most typical, in their view, symbols of American democracy.

More precisely, they show the means by which, according to the organization, the United States obsessively exports principles of freedom to other countries. Bag full of money, orange cap, cell, and even a syringe for injection. These activists are going to invite the U.S. ambassador to Russia by sending him an invitation to look at it all.

Notice, if you will, the domain suffix - .su

The "National Bolsheviks", now THEY are a fucking confusing bunch. I'd love to hear what Sergey has to say about them. I can't really nail them politically - They don't actually seem to be racists, or communist. In fact, I read about them protesting a parade for SS veterans in, Estonia I think it was?

But the entire organisation is fishy, due to how it employs armbands the german nazi flag, with the swastika replaced by the hammer and sickle. Again, they are one very weird bunch.

Early NBs were a wild mix of extreme left- and right-wing ideas. Their most infamous slogan was "Zavershim reformy tak: Stalin, Beria, GULAG" ("Let's finish the reforms this way: Stalin, Beria, GULAG"). Much of the right-wing ethos has passed since Alexander Dugin, one of the founders, left the party (now he is a prominent pro-Kremlin "politologist" and an ideologue of "Eurasianism"; see "Aleksandr Dugin’s transformation from a lunatic fringe figure into a mainstream political publicist, 1980–1998: A case study in the rise of late and post-Soviet Russian fascism"; "Alexander Dugin: geopolitics and neo-fascism in post-Soviet Russia"; "Alexander Dugin, the Issue of Post-Soviet Fascism, and Russian Political Discourse Today", etc. ).

There were numerous schisms in the movement and the more fascist elements, concerned with Limonov's cooperation with the liberal opposition and with the "orange danger", have left and founded their own dwarf parties (basically extreme right).

Currently Limonov's discourse is more civilized/democratic than it was, so I myself don't turn away from those liberals who participate together with him in movements like "The Other Russia", but I myself wouldn't do it.
