I think AT&T is in real trouble here. They couldn’t keep up with the demand and customer satisfaction with their network shows (Consumer Reports finds that they have the worst ratings among the national carriers). The rollout of iPhones was a boon to AT&T bottom line but they ran into network issues in major cities like NY where demand stressed their network. It couldn’t keep up with demand. It still can’t.

Verizon instead got a wider range of phones and customers stuck with them because while the phones didn’t have the cache of the iPhone, it was more widely available.

That’s going to count for a whole lot more going forward as users who didn’t switch to AT&T for the iPhone will be able to get the iPhones going forward. It may drive smartphone prices down further. It may also finally relieve some of the pressure on AT&T networks, and enable the network to improve its network connectivity.

I can not wait to ditch ATT. Worst service I have ever had from any telecom provider (we bundled land line & DSL as well as iPhone. Bad mistake. Really cruddy service).

Let’s hope Apple doesn’t release a special version of the iPhone 4 for Verizon, and lock out current owners. Like me.

At&T’s own patched together network is hurting them on this, too. They don’t have the same unified structure of business or network of Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile and they’re paying the price.

Fuck an iPhone, get a Droid.

re: #5 Locker

I’ve got the HTC Droid Incredible, and am pretty happy with the phone although the battery life is quite short (a known problem with the model). It’s the first smartphone I’ve had so I can’t compare it with others, but it’s got a great screen and the camera is decent. The competition will push prices down and Verizon benefits because they have shown that they can do without Apple.

Yea wife has a Motorola Droid which we love. Not everyone is in agreement that AT&T is in big trouble over this development. Here is something I just ran across on physorg:

[Link: www.physorg.com…]

For this reason, analysts expect most Verizon iPhone buyers to be people who already have Verizon service. John Hodulik at UBS expects that 77 percent of his estimated 13 million Verizon iPhones this year would go to current Verizon subscribers.

That means Verizon would be paying heavily to upgrade its own subscribers to the iPhone. Apple charges AT&T about $600 for each iPhone 4. The carrier subsidizes that down to the $199 retail price, figuring it will make money back on service fees over the run of a two-year contract. An influx of iPhone buyers would have Verizon putting up a similar $400 for each one, more than it would be subsidizing, say, a BlackBerry Curve.

Hodulik figures that even with the iPhone’s boost to service revenue, iPhone subsidies would reduce Verizon earnings this year by a net 15 cents per share, or about $425 million.

The AT&T iPhone won’t work on Verizon’s network.

I’ll keep my Droid X. My wife (an iPhone owner) is jealous. ;)

It has to be a special version to work with CDMA. It’s basically the same phone with a CDMA chipset inside. If you want to switch to Verizon from AT&T, you will have to get a new phone.

The Tea Party is so crazy, reactionary, paranoid, and stupid, that they have managed to self-immolate in the most fantastic possible way, all the way totally convinced that somebody else is doing it to them.

From a psychological perspective, this is absolutely fascinating.

um…. wrong thread, needless to say.
