Just because the Arab Spring elected people you don’t like doesn’t mean that it’s a failure. Besides, Marty Peretz probably thinks that Muslims are incapable of democracy, just as he thinks that they’re undeserving of the 1st amendment.

Given that Peretz is a well-known bigot, nothing he says on the issue is of value. One might as well listen to Helen Thomas’ opinion.

That said, what qualifies as a failure? I would say that electing theocratic party majorities is certainly at least close.

That’s only assuming that they act in an undemocratic manner, or refuse to relinquish power once voted out.

Given their undemocratic goal, that of further unification of Islamic religion and state, it’s more or less a foregone conclusion that they will act in an undemocratic manner (democracy does not boil down to a mere majority vote).

Shrugs. The same thing could probably have been said a year after the start of the American Revolution. Shall we wait awhile before we shit ourselves?

The same was said of Turkey’s AKP, and we’ve yet too see the usurpation of Turkey’s democracy. I’m merely advocating a wait and see approach, especially if they form a coalition with a liberal party.

I’m not sure what advocating is for. Wait and see is the only option we have anyway. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t voice opinions.

AKP is a bad analogy because they’re pretty soft relative to the parties we’re discussing and Turkey has a pretty stable secular system in the first place. The worries surely weren’t out of place even then.
