Seems to me that if “stand your ground” applies in this case, it applies to Trayvon Martin, who was followed by Zimmerman. Zimmerman likely initiated any altercation (why else would he be following Trayvon?). Feel sorry for Zimmerman? Nope, not me.

Well, the other thing is, the comment thread on ABC is filled with racist verbiage.

People are forgetting that Zimmerman took out after the guy, he was armed with a gun. How can it be self-defense if you are in pursuit?

Police: Zimmerman says Trayvon decked him with one blow, then began hammering his head

With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk several times, leaving him bloody and battered, authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel.

It still doesn’t explain what happened before this Ie; Zimmerman getting out of his car and what kind of confrontation occurred that might have provoked Trayvon if this is in fact what happened. There is also the something like 50 calls Zimmerman made in the month before this shooting to the police. It sounds to me like maybe Zimmerman snapped sometime in the recent past that led to this tragedy. If Trayvon did attack Zimmerman post initial confrontation it might have in fact been self defense when Zimmerman pulled his gun. Getting your head slammed into the sidewalk is a pretty serious attack.

I find this version of events dubious for one reason: how could anyone have the presence of mind to reach for their gun and fire it when they’re head is being slammed - more than once - into a sidewalk? It doesn’t take many blows to the head like this to knock anyone silly, or worse yet, given them a concussion. It sounds to me like he was pretty lucid when police and paramedics arrived after the fight, at least enough to refuse medical care until the next day.

While Trayvon may not have been a saint (getting suspended from school), he was still unarmed, no evidence has been presented that he had an arrest record of any kind, and walking by yourself after dark in a gated community is not a crime. And Zimmerman has baggage of his own - he did time for assault on a police officer a few years before - which shows he has an aggressive streak of his own.

This revelation does not shed any more light on this case.

Agreed and many good points you’ve made. There are many suspicious things with this case. The track record of the police department there not being the least. Zimmerman has also had a good amount of time to fabricate a story or misremember the facts as well while Martin will never get his side of events told.

One more obvious point - why did the Sanford police wait a month before making this information public?

I smell a rat as big as the 18 minute gap.

Personal story:

Two of my nephews. 1 grew up in the suburbs was very into rap. I was making fun of him about him being a gangsta. He told me him and his boys are “hard”. I told him you live in upper middle class suburbia in a 4,000 sq ft house and watch the NFL on two side by side large screen TV’s. You are not hard you’re privileged. After finishing college this kid is now a marketing and accounting stoog in a large grocery chain.

The other grew up in Brooklyn. His father is an investment banker worth a lot of money. When this kid wrapped his Lexus first car ever around a pole his dad bought him a Mercedes. He was also into rap and posted photos on FB with a wad of cash in his hand and handgun on the table as I recall. The boy has a few tattoos. You get the picture. When he finished college he started working in his dads firm.

Point being these kids were around the same age as Trayvon when they did these things. I read something that said Trayvons mom is a banker of some sort. I mention this because I’ve seen a couple of sites claiming this child was gangster looking. So what I say. His past had nothing to do with that night and Zimmerman knew none of his past. To me odds are this kid was on his way to nerddom college and was nothing more than an average kid.

I don’t know how reputable that linked story is just something I saw that was relevant to this post. Zimmerman should have left him alone. If he thought there was a threat when he called the police he should have left him alone as advised by 911. The only point I was making in the initial post was that if Zimmerman got attacked as the story says he could get off with a self defense plea.
