Been there; it sucks.

It's worse when you're shamed for being poor, which in America is frequently.

Now, it's getting worse because the GOP platform specifically seeks to victimize the poor, be they working people, children, old or disabled people, people victimized by bad economies, etc.

This is flat out immoral.

Given the attempts to suppress the vote, the GOP agenda could well prevail.

I hope not.

Being poor is also time consuming. You have to take the bus, you have to spend time in line at the social service agency or the food bank, etc. Something people don't really think about.

I spent 17 of the last 24 months (I lived with friends for 7 months) with no electricity and no running water. Lived in a house but it was just a shell. When I got work it was part time and not enough to cough up $350 for an electric deposit and $150 for the water one. And even if I got things turned on I had no idea how I would pay the bill when it came.
I also had to walk everywhere (I did 30 miles a week) while only eating a meal a day which means I have lost 30 pounds in the last year or so (when it was blistering hot in Florida). Now my pants and shorts don't fit.
Also, when I did get to work I HAD to buy new shoes (sneakers) because all I had were a pair of dress shoes and a pair of kitchen clogs (can't wear them to walk in, just for work).
The important thing is to not let it get you down. Remain positive. It will get better.:)

Been there, done that, and yes, it sucks. Still not rich (but honestly, I'm not sure I would know exactly what to DO with "rich" anyhow).

A few years ago, in December, some co-workers and I were leaving a local eatery after lunch. Coming out of the nearby "dollar store" were two people, parents I'm sure, with 2 carts LOADED with toys. Those dollar store toys last about a day before they break or come apart.

I knew, I just knew, that these parents wanted their kids to have a LOT of presents under the tree, and so they spent what money they had on a LOT of cheap stuff rather than a few good things. And I can't blame them, the look on a child's face when he sees an overabundance of presents under a tree is priceless.

I just about broke out in tears. I had a $100 bill in my wallet; I walked over, asked how many kids they had, we chatted, and I gave them the $100 and asked them to please buy ONE nice thing for each kid. Of course I don't know if they did it; but if those kids had even a slightly better Christmas, then I am happy.

You rock. ;)

Wait...what's that sound? Oh, never mind, it's just the theme song from Deliverance. Who knew you slack-jawed, knuckle-dragging, Southern conservative goobs could be such decent folks? //

Down in Loozianer under cedar root
Lives a slack-jawed goober named Reine de Tout
She got effigies of Obama’s bones
The religious right is all she condones
She scream (BUSH!) another lefty gone.

hehe.

Printing out a copy for my wife who RNs at the homeless clinic, my friend who volunteers at 211, and the people I work with at Habitat. We do those things because we were poor, and we're not right now.
