Fucking millionaire teachers driving around in their luxury cars............oh wait on second though.........

Teachers are professionals who should get paid for their work. Trying to pull the "but teacher's say it's for the kids" doesn't mean that teachers should be expected to do things for free out of the goodness of their hearts. Teachers already do that (working on their own time, doing extra for the kids, and paying for supplies out of their own pockets) and they are damn sick and tired of it. I say "yeah!" to teachers finally growing a backbone.

In my school district, when times were great, everyone else was rolling in the money....except for teachers. They were told that there were too many of them, so "so sad, too bad," they didn't get raises like other people were and their benefits were slowly being whittled away. Now that times are tough, they want to cut teachers' pay and benefits even more. To add to that, they suffer the indignity of being blamed for every single thing wrong in education.

Sionainn ,

Nothing of what you write is anything like the situation in Ontario, Canada that I'm writing about. Here, teachers are richly paid and have gotten annual increases for as many years as I can remember.

Teachers receive annual across-the-board increases and increases (bases on the pay grid) to recognize experience gained on the job. They get a level of pensions and paid sick leave the private sector, on either side of the border, could only dream about.

Sounds exactly like what the rightwing claims about teachers in the U.S. EXACTLY.

Teachers in my district get paid based on educational attainment as well as years spent on the job (up to 15, I believe). Sounds the same as in Canada. Additionally, they receive pensions, sick leave, and health insurance. Many make the same claim as you did, that pensions are much better than those in the private sector. Teachers, however, don't get any Social Security though they may have paid into the system prior to becoming teachers (with a few rare exceptions).

Lets take a look at those salaries, and try not to assume Canada is just like the US.

I just looked at the contract for Ontario. I also looked into cost of living there as well. It looks like teacher pay for that province is not exorbitant for the area.

I don't get that. How little should teachers make? I mean I am told all my life being a teacher is a very important job - maybe the most important job there is because they educate the new generation and we act like they should make shit wages.

Being a teacher is a hard job, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It's important to the future. I know there is a give and take between employer and employee about wages - but I won't demonize teachers or any workers for trying to get better benefits.

The writer is criticizing them for using the students as leverage in negotiating, a far more valid point than arguing against another raise. It looks to me like a good pay rate. I don't know if they suffered layoffs or not, but a two year span of no raises is not so bad, and far better than many in an economic decline of global scale.

If by "leverage in negotiating," you mean "not doing extras for free," then yeah, I guess you have a point.
