Grover Norquist thinks a tax hike is ‘still unlikely’
Via Politico:
Republicans may have failed to win the White House or reclaim the Senate, but anti-tax activist Grover Norquist’s optimism about the party is as strong as ever.
Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, carries around copies of a map showing Republican dominance in state capitols across the country. He dismisses the post-election ‘bluster’ from Democrats and insists the party is well positioned to thwart tax increases.
As fiscal cliff negotiations kick into high gear next week, Norquist says President Barack Obama won’t prevail in getting a deal that includes new revenue siphoned from top earners — something the president says is part of a “balanced approach” to deficit reduction.
In the end, Norquist says the fiscal cliff puzzle could be resolved with a familiar Washington ploy: a one or two-year punt.
‘One of the reasons I don’t get too worked up is we’ve played this game of chess with the exact same people around the table with the chess board exactly the same,’ Norquist said in an interview for C-SPAN’s ‘Newsmakers’ program taped today and slated to air on Sunday.
So Grover Norquist’s idea on how to avoid the fiscal cliff is more DC games a dysfunction? I’d call the man who says that “part of the problem”, wouldn’t you?
