Not seeing this reported elsewhere as yet. Hoping it’s bs.

a) It’s a British tabloid. If I recall correctly, they were how, before the Iraq war, some bogus alarmist stories were introduced to the media via UK right-wing papers and tabloids.

b) The three people “arrested” are the three students who were not arrested, only questioned. This is a garbled version of the story run elsewhere, with added “terror cell” bullshit. Apparently two of them have since been arrested on immigration-related matters.

c) The bombs were not particularly advanced. They were giant black powder pipe bombs, apparently triggered with electronics pulled from hobby remote control vehicles. There are plenty of places on the web where you can get information and instructional videos on hacking R/C cars. I found one Instructables video where they show how to use the 3rd channel, which is unused on a car, to cause a Nerf gun to fire.

The Mirror is not a right-wing tabloid, but they have been guilty of very shoddy reporting.

This is even dodgier than the story from the Daily Fail, I guess proving once more that when it comes to yellow journalism, nobody beats the Brits but Rupert.

And there’s an article on Huffpo with a mayor or someone official (I skipped it, and I’m on my iPod) saying they acted alone. Too many conflicting stories and I’m sure if we hang back a week or so, a better view will coalesce.

This story smells like complete BS to me.

Indeed they are a left-wing tabloid, as if the Magical Balance Fairy had waved
her tiny sparkly wand and created a “Mirror”-image of the Scum or the Fail to show the Left can do shitty sensationalist journalism too

I’m not finding any info that the bombs were black-powder based. I know what it smells like, sulfur, and different from smokeless poweder.

The interview so far with #2 in the hospital , if he can be believed , is that it was internet inspired , obviously religious in it’s inception and it’s targets . Hatred for the west and christians the alleged motive . The “arsenal “by no means sophisticated , Al Queda internet magazine provides “do it yourself ” bomb making instruction .
Spontaneous jihad , the intended purpose for Al Queda to influence those muslims who will act alone ,without any physical connection to Al queda . In this case it looks like it worked well .
One has flippantly mentioned ” tracking pressure cooker sales ” , very funny , but realistically , this kitchen item makes a perfect and rather destructive and deadly PIPE BOMB . In fact , it’s better , being circular , makes the blast and shrapnel omni-directional, set on ground level , at perfect “human height ” to wreak bloody carnage .
The nature and simplicity of this new type of bomb , will create and and bring about new security measures . Also it is relatively easy to make one’s own black powder .
