As Richard Dawkins has said many times : Belief in imaginary Gods is totally contrary to scientific empiricism.
It is totally ludicrous that children are inculcated with the metaphorical horse shit through their halfwit parents!
Everyday we see people on the TV talking to the ground, the wall and the air in the form of prayer.
To even a non religious 5 year old it’s totally daft!

You don’t need to reject God to accept evolution, unless you insist that for God to be real, every single word of your “sacred texts” must be literally true.

And this is exactly what every single evangelical church in the US requires its members to believe.

This isn’t about the existence of God, and people don’t become creationists just because they believe in God. There are people belonging to ever major faith on the planet that accept evolution, and see no conflict between it and their faith.

Only if we’re talking about fundamentalist Churches. There are a lot of devote evangelicals who accept science.

re: #1 hellosnackbar

There is really nothing to be gained by asserting that all religious believers are halfwits.

For example, one very practical point to note is this: In order to keep creationism out of public schools in the US, the votes and support of Christians who support separation of church and state is a mathematical necessity. Pissing off Christians by calling them halfwits isn’t helping with this.

Fred Clark at the Slacktivist blog refers to creationism as a symptom of and defense for the “clobber-text hermeneutic designed to defend white ownership of slaves.” Other fruits of the hermeneutic include gender inequality and anti-LGBT bigotry. patheos.com

Nice commentary.

Fred Clark is proof that evangelical Christians can be liberal, pro-equality, and pro-science.

That is both a simple and a profound insight on Fred’s part. It is obvious to anyone who is familiar with the history of American fundamentalism, but only once it is pointed out in plain language. At a purely anecdotal level, I just realized that I have literally never known a young-earth creationist who was not also a defender of the Confederacy if their views on both were known.

It is pretty amazing when you think about it. I figured the popular creationist statement, “I didn’t come from no monkey” had racist roots, but not that it could be deeper than that.

Are there prominent Muslims who support evolution that haven’t been threatened by fundamentalist Muslims?

12 CriticalDragon1177  Thu, Feb 27, 2014 8:28:55pm

re: #11 electrotek

The overwhelming majority of scientists accept evolution, and that includes Muslim who are also scientists. Why even ask if they’ve all been threatened or even all the prominent ones have? The vast majority of Muslims are not fanatics, and even if some Muslim scientists who have openly spoken out in favor of evolution have received death threats, what does that say other than some Muslims are violent fanatics who can’t accept reality? Some Christians are violent fanatics who can’t accept reality.

Do we judge Christianity or even Christians on the actions of Abortion Clinic bombers or the Ku Klux Klan? Should we do so?

With religious fundamentalism apparently on the rise, it’s time to revisit the Drake Equation, used to predict the likelihood of life elsewhere in the universe.

The key as far as we’re concerned is ‘L’. This is the phase that appears to be breaking down on our planet. As it diminishes, so do the odds of survival of an intelligent species.

Can you name any for us, please? I can name a couple Christians who’ve threatened scientists: Michael Philip Korn and David Markuse.
