The only thing particularly unusual about Rodger’s misogyny is how well documented and explicit it is especially since he acted upon his beliefs violently. The one thing I noted within his suicide note/manifesto which recurs at least twice and was not noted upon in outlets as particularly noxious enough to warrant comment but which resonated as particularly awful was his view of his mother.
She had a few relationships after divorcing her husband with wealthier men. Several times, Rodger implored her to marry one of these men so that he could once more be part of a rich family.
At no point is his mother’s desires taken into account, and if he acknowledges her reasons for not wanting to be remarried he dismisses them as a personal slight against himself.
Again, the only thing unusual about Rodger is the degree to which he is committed to the idea of his own superiority.
But his assumptions are in many ways ours too, and it colours the way men view women everyday.

I’m not so sure Roger’s view of himself is unusual. He just lacked the social skills to blend in.

For some men, anything that requires them to change even a bit isn’t worth the effort.

THIS.

It’s a pervasive mindset, sadly. Applies to most shits who whine (for our English friends, “whinge”) about “political correctness” when they’re criticized for their language choices.

Just take the damned words out of your damned vocabulary. It’s not that hard. And if you’re that attached to those words, get help. It ain’t about you.

Yes, the words we choose to use shape our thoughts and outlook.

I think the commitment I refer to is only to the lengths he went to to preserve the idea of his superiority to mankind in general and to women in particular.
The garden variety of this belief system is, I agree, as dedicated and deluded but has the quality of banality which lends it a insidiousness and, more importantly an institutional power that it loses in a ‘civil’ society by enforcing its righteousness by firepower.

I ran into the ex husband of my girlfriend at a Superbowl party at the local tavern. He said “I should shoot you for bringing that bitch back into the neighborhood.”
I had shown up as part of the emergency crew at his house after he had nearly killed her by beating her with a piece of firewood. She almost had her ear cutoff and suffered numerous other injuries including PTSD and severe disabling depression.
Any inconveniences and threats I’ve suffered as a result greatly pale in comparison to her injuries but I am affected too as now I feel I need to be cautious in my own neighborhood and carry protection against a person who threatened to kill my GF if she ever enabled the State to take away his guns.

Mechanic, I don’t know what state you live in, but in Illinois you are eligible for help for what you have encountered. You are considered a DV Survivor. Contact your local DV crisis center to find out if you they have counselling services.

Your trauma is real.

mechanic, did you report his threat to you to the police? The police in my area keep a record of every call in a system that can be tied to the police report number. If you make sure the report number is included as part of your report, it would pull up in any future investigation with this individual. It shows that he hasn’t changed his ways and could be useful in future prosecutuions.

What is certain is that Rodgers was a violent misogynist.

It is also certain that misogyny is depressingly common in society, and Rodgers didn’t have to look hard at all to find like-minded people to help him stoke his rage against women.

Nevertheless, there are way too many pundits and talking heads that want to deflect from the above two facts with diversions like mental health, or that he ended up killing more men than women, etc. etc.
