Its scary how the religious right is trying to undermine our constitution.

Which is precisely the thing that fear mongering over a Muslim fifth column and creeping sharia is designed to deflect Americans’ attention from.

If you look at the history of the Christian Reconstructionism/Dominionist movement, you will see that what is happening now at a national level, was planned LONG ago, during the Reagan years, and in the past decade is really coming into fruition. The groundwork for this was implemented by groups like Pat Robertson’s ‘Christian Coalition’, and was then expanded upon by their bringing what were once considered fringe groups (see SPLC entries on Liberty Lobby, Focus on the Family/Family Research Council, and the American Family Association) into the mainstream of the Republican Party.

These groups have been very careful in not mentioning their affiliation with the Reconstructionists, whose founders did a bit more than dip their toes into the white supremacy movement, including Holocaust denial, and advocacy for returning to slavery,

If you have any doubt whatsoever what their endgame is, here’s a quote directly from one of their co-founders.

Either that or itself projection on the hand of many in the American religious right. Ironically enough it sounds many of them tried to get Muslims to join forces with them at one point.

Another far-right Roman Catholic ideologue (and also an academic) even wrote a book calling on Christians, Jews and Muslims to join together in a jihad against the secular West. In “Ecumenical Jihad: Ecumenism and the Culture War” a former friend of mine, Peter Kreeft (a professor of philosophy at Boston College), called for “ecumenical jihad.” “Ecumenical Jihad” was dedicated to Richard John Neuhaus, the late Roman Catholic convert priest, and to the late Charles Colson (who later teamed up with George to author the “Manhattan Declaration”).

How much you want to bet that our old “counter jihad friends” Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer would desperately deny this, if it was ever brought up, or at least try to come up with some reason why Muslims were somehow “un-American” for not joining forces with them?

Good God, that’s truly terrifying! These people need to be stopped, before they did a giant pit to Hell, and throw the United States of America into.

Don’t believe it for a minute. They’d make alliances with Muslims (and Jews) to get what they want, then they’d turn on them. The far right parties in Europe are doing the same WRT Jews, pretending that they’re not antisemitic so they can go after Muslims—the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that. If they could manage to get rid of Muslims somehow, I’m 110% certain that the Jews would be next.

I’ll second what RadicalModerate said. Below is a collection of reading material, if you’re interested in knowing more. The first two books are by Jeff Sharlet, who inadvertently found himself in the midst of the wingers. I’ve read the first book, which is excellent, and the second is on my wishlist.

The Family

C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy

I’m reading this one right now. *shudder* :

Blood and Politics: The History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream

I just purchased the one below, but haven’t read it yet. Like Francis Schaeffer, this woman is an insider who broke away and has been trying to warn people and explain things. Below the link to her book is an hour-long video of her discussing it. Her website provides a table of contents of the book as well as a bibliography and some background info on herself. Her presentation isn’t as slick as some others, but she strikes me as sincere (and not a kook), and what I’ve skimmed through rings true based on other things I’ve read.

Religious Right: The Greatest Threat to Democracy

Last but not least, the book below is a bit old (first published in 1996), but it looks really interesting. I have it on my wishlist, but I haven’t bought it yet as I have a ton of other stuff to read right now.

Religion and the Racist Right: The Origins of the Christian Identity Movement

This review of the book (and the 10 comments in response to it) will give you a peek at the vicious antisemitism that the racist element on the right brings to the Christian Identity Movement. As RM has already pointed out, there’s a good bit of crossover between Reconstructionists & white supremacists (with all the garbage that entails).

Everyone who wants to continue living in a secular, pluralistic, constitutional republic needs to open their eyes to what’s happening and get out there and STOP it by voting. If the GOP/Tea Party wins the White House & control of Congress in 2016, we are well and truly screwed (especially women).

Gah, it’s late and I’m being verbose again. Goodnight!

P.S. If there’s any doubt whatsoever in your mind about the antisemitism percolating just under the surface of the religious right, I suggest you read Bonnie Weinstein’s book that was just released last month. She’s the wife of Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). I recently finished reading it—it’s basically just a compendium of the hate mail they receive, much of it from so-called Christians. The personal and disgustingly antisemitic attacks on them (and their entire family, including the kids) is un-freaking-believable.

re: #5 CuriousLurker

Thanks. Looks like I’m going to have a lot of reading to do when I have the time.
