My mother used canned cherry pie filling, but also never did just a straight cherry pie. It was a recipe that in-family was referred to as “yucky cherry cream pie” since my sister apparently called it that once. I loved it though.

However, since I’m pretty sure it’s not kosher I don’t think you have that as an alternative. Not sure what the “cream pie” part was constructed of, though my current guess would be that it involved condensed milk.

It’s next to impossible to get fresh sour cherries for pie, you have to use either canned or frozen cherries. Last year’s Michigan cherry crop was wiped out by a false start of spring.

Sour cherries do not ship well, so they have to be processed on site either canned or frozen.
