The problem was that Germany’s economic crisis was beyond the capacity of the mainstream parties to solve and the SA’s main opposition in the streets were the Communists, and they scared middle-class Germans far more than Hitler. Which is understandable, since non-Jewish middle-class Germans were not on the Nazis ‘kill list’ but were on the Communists’ ‘kill or dispossess list’.

Hitler and his cronies were far from inevitable, and the Weimar Republic could have marginalized them.
