Gould was one of the great science writers for the public. He made evolutionary theory not only accessible, but lyrical. He was never the in-your-face atheist that Dawkins has become (which is a shame, because Dawkins, as a science writer, is also killler bee - read The Ancestor’s Tale for the most cogent explanation of modern evolutionary thinking available).

You’d probably like this book. I haven’t read any Dawkins yet, but I like Ken Miller’s style. Only A Theory was very readable, and not quite as dry for my taste as Coyne’s Why Evolution Is True.
