My take: History is neither cyclical nor linear. It is helical, spiraling around a central axis so that it loops back again and again, but always slightly off (forward or backward) from the original and never exactly the same. Make predicting the future much harder than with either other theory. Feel free to rip it to pieces. I just made it up.
