When Nina Davuluri was named Miss New York, I shared the news on my QQ blog here in China, so I can show my students how egalitarian the USA is. It’s a shame that such progress has be accompanied by mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging bigotry.

There were nasty comments back when Vanessa Williams won Miss America; I heard more than a few in my white-bread town. The main difference was, of course, there really was no such thing as social media back then, so such commentary was either over the phone or face-to-face.
