Times Square shooting: NYPD officers shoot two innocent bystanders near Times Square

Police said officers saw a man on foot weaving erratically through traffic and sometimes blocking vehicles. After approaching him, police said, the man reached into his pocket as if grabbing a weapon, and two officers fired a total of three shots. They missed him but struck a 54-year-old woman in the right knee and a grazed a 35-year-old woman in the buttocks, police said.

The women were taken to hospitals, where they both were listed in stable condition, according to police. Neither had injuries considered life threatening, police said.

The man was taken into custody after a police sergeant subdued him with a Taser. No weapons were found on him.

Maybe some training about not firing into crowds would be good.

re: #34 Kragar

Each season covers a few months at most.

At the beginning of the 5th season, there’s a scene in which Walt marks his 52nd birthday. After the title card, the subsequent episodes show him celebrating his 51st. At some points during the first few episodes of the 5th season, he notes that his cancer diagnosis was "almost exactly one year ago", which is when he embarked upon all this mess in the first place. So all the events the audience has witnessed so far have taken place during the course of something around one year.

Ah, just checking on the stats because I can’t watch the games, but I see that the Packers won and I’ll even be happy about a Bears win - they defeated the Vikings so it’s a wash. +1 on the one hand -1 on the other ;) OTOH, I’d be happier with a Detroit team that would play a wee bit more consistently.

Oh if there is a spin-off for Goodman, Skinny Pete and Badger better be regulars in the cast. I’m sure they could shoehorn that in somehow.

May create a few continuity problems but I don’t really care.

Morning shift knows people don’t like to talk about economics, a dry subject at best. But this article is disturbing.

Fed likely to slow bond buys despite tepid economy

bigstory.ap.org

“Few think the Fed will significantly reduce its bond purchases — not now, anyway. Many economists think the Fed will announce when its two-day policy meeting ends Wednesday that it will slow its purchases by $10 billion — to $75 billon (sic) a month.

“The pullback is expected to come from the Fed’s Treasury purchases. It will likely maintain the pace of its mortgage bond buying to try to keep home-loan rates down to sustain the housing rebound.

“Some had once expected a sharper first reduction in the Fed’s purchases of around $20 billion a month. But that was before the government said that job growth was only modest in August and that employers added many fewer jobs in June and July than previously thought.”

This is a lot to chew on. My initial reaction about TARP was, let the financials eat cake, since the Fed took over the Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDOs) of the financials which brought the economy to its knees in the first place, and placing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into govt conservatorship was a part of that. And there are those who now want to end that arrangement and let the chips fall where they may.

It’s still a fragile economy, and I don’t know exactly what’s meant by “full employment” anymore. I do know that ordinary people are still teetering on the brink, a paycheck away from disaster, while those at the top continue their rape of the wealth of this country.

Was another Great Depression just stalled? Not for the bottom 20%, and without the SNAP program, Medicaid and other govt programs many people might have been begging door to door. And appearances can be deceiving: when I leave this area, where people tend to “keep to themselves” and don’t allow their troubles to be publicly aired unless they get in trouble w/the law or their house is foreclosed on (yes, it’s still happening), and when I go into Charlotte, the damage is much more visible, it’s writ large. The groups of youths walking the streets, the homeless, many from outside the city who get help because there is none where they came from, the disrepair of housing outside of the more affluent neighborhoods are like a smack in the face. Now, as an “outsider” I can see far more than I did when I actually lived there, in an objective way, and it’s certainly not what I experienced 14 yrs ago, even when my own life was falling apart. The great little, well-built house I owned for 14 yrs, from 1978 until 1993, was boarded up this year, and the entire area is in terrible shape. I’m not being sentimental, just stating facts.

In the end, TARP may have saved capitalism, but from where I sit, it didn’t do a hell of a lot for the ordinary person, because those who run the capitalist economy in the end, in spite of govt policies designed to help actual people, capitalist institutions were the real benefactors, and have contributed to the creeping inflation we see everywhere, in ordinary consumer buying, in housing, in education, in every facet of our lives. It’s also one of the reasons there is no actual job creation, why investments are done overseas, why Rs and some Dems continue to cut public budgets in states and local venues, and continue doing nothing in Congress except eroding the tax base. They’re not willing to increase taxes on the wealthy by very much, and yet, unemployed people don’t pay taxes and require more govt help just to survive. We have an entire young generation who is being cheated as I never was. Even as a lower paid individual, my life wasn’t constantly off the rails and I could survive, even raise my 2 kids w/o help. A large percentage of this generation will be unemployable except in the worst paid jobs without a decent education, because there are no other kind for them. Even if they could get an education, will the jobs be there?

We could have already had some real reforms, but instead, the political poisoning from the right wing damned anything Pres Obama saw as corrections to the wealth inequalities we continue to see today. I think he’s had an almost impossible job, yet I’d rather continue on this course than go backward in 2016. The heavy damage has been done, and we can’t afford to do any more.

71 A Mom Anon  Mon, Sep 16, 2013 3:37:13am

re: #70 Justanotherhuman

The powers that be aren’t scared of us. At all. The system is rigged and they’re the ones rigging it. I’m not even sure elections can actually fix much anymore. It doesn’t seem like enough people are interested in fixing what’s broken either. Maybe at a local level, but even then, when you have all the games being played with government funding for nearly everything, I don’t know if even local level offices can do a lot to make it better right now.

I don’t know, I was raised to, as my Grandma put it, See Around Corners, to look ahead and try to game out what will happen if you do A or B and pick what seems best at the time. I don’t see much of that anymore, and I don’t even know if that’s a great strategy now or not. Business people and politicians sure as hell don’t seem to give a rat’s ass about this right now, that’s for sure.

I’m sitting here facing trying to get a young autistic person into some kind of school or job training since the “transition plan” out of high school has now fallen apart. He was supposed to have state level help, but since our state keeps cutting taxes, less money is coming in from the feds because of that and there goes that concept. There was a brand new school built with federal dollars for these young people, staffed with wonderful people and it’s in danger of being shut down. After 10 million dollars was spent to put it in place only 2 1/2 yrs ago. And the same politicians who sat there at the ribbon cutting smiling are going to be the same ones telling people how wasteful it was to spend stimulus money on this in the first place.

I’m also considering going to school, but at age 53, what do I do that would allow me to make a living and who will hire me once I graduate? And where is the money going to come from to pay for it all? There’s financial aid, but that probably won’t cover all of it, and I simply cannot find a job right now, I just passed putting in FIFTY applications at various places in the last 3 months and I have not received so much as an email saying fuck you. No phone calls, nada. It’s my age and the 20 yr gap in my job history. I have no references or contacts anymore, hell I have no clue where any of my old bosses are or even if they remember me if I could find them. Is going to school going to make a difference? Am I supposed to mortgage my family’s finances to find out?

Sigh. I don’t know, the rich and the big corporations have more money than ever and they still aren’t creating and damned jobs unless they’re so low paying as to be laughable. Something has to give here and it really shouldn’t be the poor and middle class every fucking time.

72 Justanotherhuman  Mon, Sep 16, 2013 3:54:59am

I agree w/everything you said (MomAnon). The effect of what is happening ripples through all generations; I was your age when my employment opportunities declined. Had already been to comm college in my 30s, and it didn’t help me as much as I thought it would, except personally it broadened my understanding of how the world works. I was thankful for that, at least. In my last 3 jobs, I was probably the most literate employee there—including the managers. Companies just don’t seem to care about education anymore, except a very narrow type geared toward business, and more’s the pity. It encourages the sharks.

Can echo most of what you said. In the last year, the small county school that was so supportive of our seriously autistic granddaughter has turned 180, resisting almost all accommodation and even the testing in her IEP. Her aide is on the block. From their point of view, it’s just triage of the money they have to do their mission. Daughter has quit her teaching job and created a home editorial/writing job to make up the difference, knowing the kid will not make it through middle school.

re: #73 Decatur Deb

A sad reality about autism services is this:

Early intervention is key. It’s where about 95% of all the attention and money goes. Don’t get me wrong, this is a vital thing, but once a kid hits the “tween” years things begin drying up FAST. And no one talks about it. I’ve tried to warn other parents of younger kids, that hey, things might look pretty good now, but you need to prepare yourselves, once they hit about 6th to 7th grade, you are going to wonder wtf happened to all your support. They look at me like I’m nuts. I hate it for them, but there is literally NOTHING out there for autistic teens and young adults who need the extra help and community support. Schools are anxious to pull services(so they push “mainstreaming” with little if any backup)because they’re so strapped for cash. It’s almost like an autistic teenager becomes invisible, like they don’t exist anymore because they’re not a little kid. You don’t outgrow autism, I don’t know what the hell people think is supposed to happen to these kids once no help is available.

And if you’re lucky enough to find something like we did, you are still at the mercy of funding cuts. The very people who need the most stability are usually the first ones thrown to the wolves when it comes to money. So here’s a story buttressing my assertion about the income gap in my previous comment; you know, w/stats and everything. : )

Employment Gap Between High- and Low-Income Families Widest On Record

talkingpointsmemo.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — The gap in employment rates between America’s highest- and lowest-income families has stretched to its widest levels since officials began tracking the data a decade ago, according to an analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press.

Rates of unemployment for the lowest-income families — those earning less than $20,000 — have topped 21 percent, nearly matching the rate for all workers during the 1930s Great Depression.

U.S. households with income of more than $150,000 a year have an unemployment rate of 3.2 percent, a level traditionally defined as full employment. At the same time, middle-income workers are increasingly pushed into lower-wage jobs. Many of them in turn are displacing lower-skilled, low-income workers, who become unemployed or are forced to work fewer hours, the analysis shows.

If that big tat covering her side had been of a dragon or something like that, there’s not a shot in hell that would have passed pageant scrutiny. Like I said about her before, had she not been a pretty blonde with a tiara in her wardrobe, not a single news organization would have done a story on her. There are thousands of young women serving this country, who have tattoos, who have goals and are working hard, Miss Kansas isn’t any more special than they are. Not to take away from her, she actually seems to be level headed and fairly smart, but she’s not THE gold standard of American womanhood.

The mention of gruel reminded me that I wanted to tell you I’m reading Charles Dickens’ “The Chimes”. The character Toby “Trotty” Veck is a slightly addled-minded schmuck who makes a precarious living as a “porter” running and delivering messages. Alderman Cute is a blowhard one-percenter who thinks all the poors should be “put down” as often as possible.
Toby’s daughter brings him dinner, a “basin of tripe”, and Alderman Cute is outraged that Toby is eating tripe because that takes tripe out of the mouths of starving widows and children (all the while eating up the last of Toby’s tripe).
Sooo, apparently the lesson is “no tripe for you, poor person! how DARE you eat tripe!”

Last week I watched “Les Miserables” which was pretty good except for the fact that Russell Crowe can’t sing for shit. I had to read Les Mis (the actual novel IN FRENCH not the libretto) in a French literature class that I took in college over 40 years ago. I would read a few pages in French, then read the same passage in an English translation, rinse and repeat. Some of the really boring parts I just skimmed the translation.

Reading Les Mis in French must be what it’s like for a non-English-speaking person to read Dickens.

I often wonder if it’s that people just don’t bother coping anymore, or if it’s that blowing people away like it’s the opening day of waterfowl season is the “new” way of coping.

Back in around ‘95 or so, I heard a radio commercial with a punchline of “It’s the ’90s answer to everything: If they tick you off, blow ‘em away.” I didn’t think anything of at the time, more an example of dark humor, but over the years I can’t help but wonder if that adwriter might have been possessed with some uncanny - and tragic - foresight.

Good morning Lizards from “sunny” (the sun *is* out there behind the overcast) Philadelphia.

Glum local sports fans as the Eagles lost to a last second field goal and questions have been raised about the defense. The Phillies got stomped as they run out the string on a losing season.

The cats got a new supply of catnip mice to play with and have been tossing them about the apartment. More things to eventually fish from under the couch or china cabinet. Hopefully this distracts them from unwinding toilet paper and eating the house plants.

And interesting to sit here at work today. Some visitors from the plants in Germany here today. So I’m hearing conversation in German over to one side of my desk and conversation in Portuguese in the other direction. Oddly enough, there seems to be no outrage here about an Indian-American winning the Miss America pageant.

What I remember from the Vanessa Williams crowning, the “Miss Black America” pageant announced they were closing since there was no longer any reason to compete with “Miss White America” and there was a lot of disappointment, mainly because now that “Miss White America” has crowned its first woman of color, they will go back to crowning only white women for the next hundred years or so.

And then there is the “Miss Universe” pageant which I always wondered how they can call themselves that, when they have no contestants from other planets? For the same reason that the “World Series” only includes teams from the U.S. (and Canada)

When Nina Davuluri was named Miss New York, I shared the news on my QQ blog here in China, so I can show my students how egalitarian the USA is. It’s a shame that such progress has be accompanied by mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging bigotry.

There were nasty comments back when Vanessa Williams won Miss America; I heard more than a few in my white-bread town. The main difference was, of course, there really was no such thing as social media back then, so such commentary was either over the phone or face-to-face.

Three shooters are involved in the Navy Yard shooting, a police spokeswoman said.
One of the shooters is “down,” police said, but two remain in a building on the grounds.
One of the shooters at large is dressed in fatigues. At least one has a long gun, police said.

Police now believe two shooters, including one in fatigues, have killed four people and wounded eight others at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, throwing the region into fear and chaos during the morning commute.

At least one of the shooters is “down,” police said mid-morning, but it was unclear whether that means the suspect has been arrested or shot. They said the other suspect remains at large, and police believe they have pinned down one between the third and fourth floors of one of the buildings on the installation in Southeast Washington.

CNN right now is talking heads while footage shows what looks to be an officer with a bomb dog checking out parked vehicles (and being escorted by someone in heavier gear with a rifle.) CNN itself is not even reporting any firm numbers on number of gunmen, fatalities, or even total casualties yet.

And then their map showed Navy Yard being 2.6 mi from the White House, as compared to the Capitol which is the usual point for dividing up D.C. into quadrants. So I quipped about the White House being more important since CNN would not have cared if someone had started shooting Congressmen - and that they were on vacation anyways.

That got laughs in the lunch room.

A lot of people have no direction in their lives unless they have something to oppose. Without opposition their lives are literally directionless.

I believe this is because they are lazy and naive. Doing good is hard work and never completely successful. Doing evil is easy, is successful just by intention alone and usually mistaken for good.

I suspect it may be worse in the States because of the Puritan influence. People forget or don’t know that the Puritans, and similar sects, regarded themselves involved in an endless war against Satan. That war has morphed over the centuries so that now the most common version of it is against ‘liberals’ and all those people connected to them in some capricious manner.

If you go looking in to the deep dark recesses of the Internet, you will find what you’re looking for. Guaranteed.

If you think that there’s someone out there who’s even more racist or prone to spouting off conspiracy theories, you will find them.

In some instances, you have to wonder how they managed to get online with that amount of dumb embedded in every posting. I feel dumber having read that posting.

My guess is it was a lone gunman - who is apparently dead. Lots of plain clothes officers walking around. Rarely will you get three idiots together who decide to take on a military facility.

Yes, I think they are just being overly cautious as, of course, they have to be with something like this. I suspect it was one shooter.

Obama is busy going off on the TP and the GOP. Defending Obamacare; the candidate who called for its repeal in the 2012 election lost. 40+ attempts at repeal have lost.

Millions of people already benefiting from Obamacare.

And he’s calling out the TP for attempting to default the government over its demands to get Obamacare defunded. The last time the threat of a default caused economic growth the slow. Now, the same crew is back at it demanding 100% of its demands be met or else economic and political chaos.
