He’s an almost forgotten hero of mine, too. I saw him speak at the University of Redlands (CA) in 1979 or so. A bunch of fellow students read The Night is Dark and I am Far From Home and it caused two to drop out and one to join the Peace Corp and then turn into a Republican. O:

I was reading “Ordinary Resurrections” in a coffee shop and burst into tears—didn’t think reading a non-fiction book about education in the Bronx would require a safe place for reading, but apparently it did.

That Fred Rodgers worked with Kozol on some of his projects made me love Mr. Rodgers more than ever as well.

I loved that when the execrable Bernie Goldberg wrote his “100 People Who are Screwing Up America,” Kozol was number 9—definitely a badge of honor (Al Franken was #37)
