Honestly, the issue really is one of apathy on the part of Americans. The 24/7 media is just giving them what they want. Pop culture, infotainment, a quickie for those who can handle a paragraph or two. Analysis is boring. Making sense of analysis is hard, as is forming your own opinions. It’s easier to take the opinion of someone you like and make it your own.
If it were apathy, there wouldn’t be so many “other” outlets for information. People who have the time and inclination to learn more than is offered on TV seem to be a profitable market.
I think that the role of TV news has changed.
