I think there’s always an attempt to paint historical figures with modern brushes. Same thing happens with Hobbes and Locke. It’s important, if you’re going to think deeply about law and politics to understand the basic tenants of their philosophies. But at the end of the day, they were commenting on a very different world than what we live in today and while we can look to them for guidance, it is our responsibility to address modern problems in a modern way

I definitely agree with that. I try to judge historical figures by the issues of their own time which is why I brought Edmund Burke’s position on Ireland to the discussion. A conservative COI Irishman would have not supported the things he did.
