Tax by itself is a false metric. How those taxes affect spending power is much better, however that isn’t as catchy a talking point.
Doesn’t stop folks from thinking that flat tax is the best thing since sliced cheese, or that it effectively results in a massive redistribution of the tax burden from rich to everyone else. Or else it results in massive deficits. Or both - leaving the poor in an even worse situation because safety net services come under fire.
Oh, and I love how some folks think that Fair Tax will help everyone, including the little guy, because it’s not being proposed by the rich (ignoring who’s pushing the proposals, and who’d actually benefit the most - in gross and net terms).
