That would be true if the religious convictions in question are good, like the golden rule example you gave.
However, there are any number of religions whose teachings are not so good, such as Wingnut Christianity, and no amount of sincerity in holding these beliefs will make them any better.
I was taught that the word of god is written on every human heart. I translate that as the “love” (my humanistic a/k/a for the “god”.
I know that I am a bit pollyanna when I think any truly held religious conviction encompasses that. Yet, it seems that the truly holy people from all flavors of belief end up there.
