The Queen’s longevity may be one reason. Her family was in the press during WWII, when she and Margaret were still in primary school. She’s ruled since she was a teenager, and people have watched her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren grow up. She took to the new medium of television to make the royals less remote and isolated from everyday Brits. Her response to the death of Diana was a Big Fail, but people seem to have forgiven her for it.
Yeah I think that’s definitely part of it as well. For many people, Elizabeth is the only British monarch they’ve ever known and you’re right. I remember Harry and William as little boys and I honestly saw a slight resemblance between Diana and my own mom as a boy.
