I’m not sure that the revisionism is quite so modern really. There was a lot of after the fact mythology getting pushed by some southerners defending their position right after they lost the war, and even when it looked like things were not going to go their way.

It just happens that such revisionism takes time to gain momentum. Such things didn’t gain legs in the age before mass media until the generation that experienced them was no longer around. The myth of Confederate nobility really took off in the early to mid 20th century.
