Blago’s Appointed Senator Admits Lying!

Politics • Views: 2,587

You have got to be kidding me. Burris changes story on Senate seat.

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, who repeatedly denied anyone tied to disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich solicited him for cash in exchange for his seat, now acknowledges Blagojevich’s brother asked him three times to help with fundraising.

In an affidavit Burris quietly filed nine days ago with the head of the House committee that recommended Blagojevich’s impeachment, Illinois’ new junior senator also said he spoke with three close associates of the governor about being appointed to the Senate. Prior, Burris only acknowledged having spoken to one such friend.

Burris said he refused the fundraising request for Blagojevich, who was removed from office after being charged Dec. 9 with corruption, including trying to sell the Senate seat Burris now holds. The new affidavit—filed only after he was seated in Congress—is Burris’ third account of what happened behind the scenes preceding Blagojevich’s decision to pick him as President Barack Obama’s replacement in the Senate.

He came forward and filed a correction:
"Mr. Burris issued a statement Saturday saying he voluntarily gave the committee a Feb. 4 affidavit disclosing the contact with Robert Blagojevich because "there were several facts that I was not given the opportunity to make during my testimony to the impeachment committee."" I think that way he handled this will not be fatal to him. Just One Mans Opinion. Your mileage may vary. If somebody else had come forward with it, like Blago's brother, he would have been dead meat.

So what can be done about it? Will any Democrat senator dare to oppose the legitimacy of the only African-American senator? If so, that would give me hope that we are entering a "post-racial" America. But then, if I was big believer in hope, I might have voted for Obama.

Obama and his Dem buddies have billions of payback with a fig leaf of oversight on the Dem pet projects but plenty on anything left over from the Bush administration.

The next step in this dance will be the actual regular appropriation bills that still need to be done. Look for huge cuts in law enforcement, DHS, ICE, commerce, and defense.

The corruption in this Administration is rampant. The media's failure to report on and examine the numerous revelations of corruption and lieing by the Democrats is demoralizing. Our country is on a downward spiral and I fear our inability to stop before the bottom looms large. It appears as though ethics are being rewriten, integrity and character no longer apply and power corruption is complete. We need a strong, conservative leader who is as eloquent as he/she is principaled and courageous to reestablish the conservative movement. The progressive liberals perfected the ability to lie, steal and cheat while looking American in the eye. They managed to get out there louder and larger and lie right to the masses counting on half the population to either not give a shit or to be too ignorant to care. They were right and the game they are playing...well they are winning, folks. We need to get in the game and soon.

And I cannot for the life of me understand why we as americans of all hues do not go together arm in arm after all we went through in the Civil War: we certainly said to every citizen that we are all valuable together, we said yes to this with blood, how much more strongly can we affirm it?

I do not understand.

Joliet JackHammers offer former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich a job on their baseball team

An unlikely suitor has stepped to the plate with a job offer for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The Joliet JackHammers, a Will County minor-league baseball team, have offered the fallen politician a contract for the 2009 season. Team officials faxed an offer—which includes an $800-a-month salary and free lodging with a host family—to Blagojevich's publicist this week.

The ex-governor has not turned down the offer.

"I don't yet know how serious of an offer it is or whether it is something he will pursue," said Blagojevich publicist Glenn Selig. "But the governor is a huge baseball fan, and playing in the minor leagues is something he has wanted to do as a kid and would do for nothing."

Teapot Dome brings back some memories. Memories of not studying it in High School. I recall having to memorize Harding = Teapot Dome scandal, without learning about any of the associated background of politics in the '20s, Harding, or the scandal at all. Apparently it was standardized test material, so had to be brought up, but not actually taught.

Oh, the wonders of modern public education.

Lucky you. If I hadn't read the entirety of my history textbooks several times over due to boredom, I never would have learned about it in school. I learned more US history by watching The Simpsons than from public school.

Next on the agenda:

White House budget director Peter R. Orszag has committed to instituting tougher budget-discipline rules -- once the economy turns around. Those include a mandate that any "nonemergency" spending increases be offset by equal spending cuts or tax inescreas.

Of course, this will all involve a bunch of hand-holding bipartisanship

Obama aides say they aren't looking for quick action, but a start to the conversation. "We're going to bring some things to the table, but we're going to listen to everybody else," said Christina Romer, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, in an interview Friday. "It's a giant issue, and it's not one we can solve unilaterally."

The president met with 44 fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats this week and gave a nod to legislation that would set up commissions to deal with long-term deficit strains. The commissions would then present plans to Congress for an up-or-down vote.

Cool- because most of my family came here in the 1900s, but I also have Native American blood, and an ancestor who was a prisoner of war sold into slavery.

But mostly- it's just another injustice to make people who had nothing to do with slavery pay for it. Two injustices don't make a right.

re: #154 6pat6

Trade between the States was a huge issue, as the South had seen the North as being given preferential treatment by the Federal Government. Slavery was NEVER a primary issue.

The entire coalition of state governments that formed the Confederacy were slave states, and advocates of pushing the practice of slavery into the new territories.

The use of slaves was necessary for the economies of these states. To ensure the continuation of the practice they needed control of the Federal government, especially the Supreme Court. The new territories not being slave states gave those newly formed states no reason to enter into a coalition with slave holding states.

That the political bloc formed by these states had other political agendas isn't deniable. That they used slavery as their wedge issue isn't either. With no slavery, there was no southern Democratic Party capable of pursuing their agenda in the White House and Supreme Court. With the North's reaction to Kansas-Nebraska and the nations subsequent election of Lincoln, they knew they were relegated to a permanent minority in the government. That was what caused them to raise their army. For them, democracy was no longer an option in pushing their political goals forward.

Many Americans agreed with them on tariff issues, and some of their views on the role government, but in the end it didn't matter. Slavery was both too divisive and immoral for too many to ever accept, and too useful a geopolitical tool for forcing their cooperation between slave states by the southern Democrats to ever consider giving it up.

Ultimately, if there were no slavery, there never would have been a Civil War as it happened. Slavery stopped southern ideology from spreading to non-slave states, and that ideology could not be divested from slavery because it was necessary to the power of the Democratic parties establishment in slave states.

I do not know what that set him back, but here in the Boston area a setup like that at Mt. Auburn cemetery would set you back a median income in the US for a year and perhaps a lot more. Place is filling up after a couple hundred years, so the price of "real estate" there is through the roof. A small cremation plot set you back $500 when I bought on to inter my Dad in 1984. Being the kind of guy I am, I bought one for myself too next to it. I figure that at least I will know one of my neighbors. What the hell does this guy think he is? Pharaoh? Unbalanced to be sure.

re: #180 Scion9

Excellent post. The revisionism is a modern phenomenon, shared by Pat Buchanan-David Duke- the Von Mises Institute-the Political Cesspool-Vlaams Belaang-the League of the South-Ron Paul, on and on. Edwin Pollard, of the Richmond Examiner, wrote the "Southern History of the War", a staple textbook for many years in the old Confederacy, that was quite straight forward in their grievances. Trade was not mentioned, property was, a specific type of property.

I hesitate to post on this , some people see it as a sectional attack, but it astounds me that the 4 years of the Confederacy are seen as the Holy Grail of patriotism, not to be condemned. The southern states have a glorious history in our republic, especially in the Revolutionary War, why this loyalty to a bunch of would-be aristocrats that drug their neighbors and the rest of the country into a bloody heap to maintain their status at everyone else's expense, including their non-slaveholding Southern friends, family and neighbors has to be the touchstone of respect for our Southern countrymen.

re: #179 Afrocity

I consider the present "affirmative action" stuff to be an insult to the people who get it. Its basically saying that they are second rate people and need the extra help to be "equal" in society. Perhaps there was a place for it in the 60s for a while. That it has hung around for so long is demeaning to the people like you who work hard, and are honest.

Those who wish to debate the causes of the Great Unpleasantness Between the States would be well advised to read the chapters of McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" dealing with events leading up to the war.

It's worth remembering that pre-War America actually divided into four factions, not two.

The real problem is that there are people who seek to use that conflict to justify eternal moral superiority...and exploit it for political gain.

On behalf of the State Of Illinois and Black people I apologize for Obama and Blago. I feelas if I should have done more to help McCain and stop Obama.

Chicago does have good people.

CHICAGOSTAN C(R)OOK country is a one party state, reminds me of the GRANT ADMINISTRATION.

I'm not sure that the revisionism is quite so modern really. There was a lot of after the fact mythology getting pushed by some southerners defending their position right after they lost the war, and even when it looked like things were not going to go their way.

It just happens that such revisionism takes time to gain momentum. Such things didn't gain legs in the age before mass media until the generation that experienced them was no longer around. The myth of Confederate nobility really took off in the early to mid 20th century.

I believe what we're seeing here is the "Same Old Same Old" politics being confronted with the fact that they are actually being watched and investigated by "the people". By that I mean individuals who are capable of smelling rats and, via modern technology, are able to hunt them. It's getting much harder to hide the money trail and the communication records.

Two questions: 1. Are we heading into an age of Honest Politicians? 2. Can our Republic possibly survive such an age?

This is nothing new to America and is not a relic of the Civil War. It is the literal form of government the earliest European settlers formed. Puritan Theocracy.

Ah, thank you, your point is taken. I'll leave this link, I think you'll find it interesting, it deals mostly with the modern phenomenon. I agree with the points you made, I can respect the old boys.....modern revisionists, not quite.

Re: #6 midwestgak: I didn't vote for Walt Minnick (represents my district), but I already like him. He may be the one honest democrat you're looking for.

Of course, he's a 1st-termer...that may change if he gets any tenure.

There's an interesting book on Chicago crime and politics (the two are synonomous) called "When Corruption Was King". It is a true story written by Robert Cooley. Cooley, a high living gambler, ladies man, and attorney, becomes emeshed with the Chicago Outfit following a brief stint as a cop. He figures he'll just be called upon for favors (fixing parking tickets, making embarrassing misdemeanors go away, etc.) Over time though he realizes that the Chicago political and judicial systems are so corrupt that an acquittal for any crime can be bought. Those include racially motivated assaults, child molestation, and contract murder. Cooley's conscience ultimately gets the better of him and he decides to bring down Chicago's notoriously corrupt First Ward.

Roman emperor Caligula had more ethics than do some Chicago politicians.

He belongs in Joliet.

That prison is closed. He should go to Crest Hill (for Stateville) or Pontiac.

Trade between the States was a huge issue, as the South had seen the North as being given preferential treatment by the Federal Government. Slavery was NEVER a primary issue.

Excuse me!?! The expansion of slavery was the primary issue for the Civil War. Without that, it never would have occurred.

201 Sloppy  Sat, Feb 14, 2009 10:10:34pm

Don't worry. If reparations are paid for slavery, they will be paid with borrowed money, like the "stimulus" package. That means future generations of slaves' descendants will help foot the bill.
