The idea of the Tea Party, IIRC, was originally inspired by the Boston Tea Party of history. A rant against unfair taxes. Which, I think, most citizens can find one or more reasons to sympathize.

Somehow, it got highjacked or morphed into a bat-shit crazy group of unorganized people with gripes about anything and everything.

That’s the fantasy version of how the current tea party thing got going. Actually, Ron Paul started doing Tea Party rallies in 2007 or so, and the concept spread, with and without his help, into a libertarian movement disguised as a Republican movement, that still claims on occasion to have Democrats in it.
