Personally, I consider Iran to be one of the major power countries in the region. If we dealt with them on a more normal basis, it would be far easier to tell them its time to end this. Right now, we have no real pull on convincing them to stop funding those groups.

I honestly don’t know if having an ambassador in Tehran would make a great deal of difference in dealing with Iran compared to the current post-Iran-deal situation, where we’ve already demonstrated that we having working communication channels. More to the point, what would the Iraqi government (just for instance) say if we apparently reward a government trying to overthrow them?
