The estate tax is the single best tax we have in the system, except that I doubt it’s actually being collected on massive fortunes like the Waltons etc.
GOP whining about the family farm and the little guy is obviated by the fact that it only kicks in above several million dollars.
To be blunt, why on earth shouldn’t massive amounts of unearned income be taxed?
The rational argument against it is the idea that the money is being taxed twice - once when being earned, and again upon inheritance. While I can agree somewhat with the principle, the reality is that it is meant to help stop establishment of aristocracy, which is well worth it. That said, all efforts to stop establishment of aristocracy and plutocracy in the US appear to have failed.
