To be fair, a large part of your argument also invovled the fact that it was ‘known’ that the Soviet Union was collapsing, hence no reason to make things difficult for them in Afghanistan. That assertion at the least implies, if not directly states, that US actions in opposition to the Soviets was wrong.

Thank you for actually reading what I wrote. My overall point kind of got muddled down because of all the tangential arguments that spawned from my original post. Yes, it would have been nice if we had known that the Soviets were fucked even without our intervention in Afghanistan. But obviously hindsight is 20/20. It’s not that I opposed our intervention per se, moreso the fact that we had to ally ourselves with the scum of the earth.

I acknowledge that we had greater foreign policy aims when taking many of these actions. But I am hoping that in the future we take a step back and weigh short-term foreign policy goals against the long-term consequences of jumping into bed with groups whose only allegiance to America is hatred of a common enemy.
