A lot of what-ifs make for good fiction (something at which time-travel shows often fail, being stuck on Hitler or the US Civil War.)

Orson Scott Card (yeah, I know, but this is a good one) had a novel called Pastwatch — in which time travelers came to Central America in about 1470 to release a bio-engineered virus that led to mild symptoms, easily recoverable, and left the indigenous of north, south and central America immune to the European diseases that killed so many in our timeline… also gave them them some warnings about “no, it’s not quetzlcoatl, those ships are full of bad guys you need to resist. Let me show you how to make steel and gunpowder…”
