All honesty, I am loath to call myself an atheist, or even agnostic. I call myself a ‘lapsed Catholic’ because even if I don’t believe in the faith anymore, I carry around too much of the upbringing and philosophical underpinnings from growing up a liberal Catholic to say otherwise.
I think it’s important to separate belief or nonbelief in a god or gods from worldview. To me, nonbelief in a god or gods is not an organizing principle. It’s separate from your philosophical worldview. You can be atheist and believe in universal human rights, or you can be atheist and believe in total Social Darwinism.
