Regardless of grammer rules, I agree with the nuns that the “starting a paragraph with the word “I” is less effective than using another noun.
The constant use of “I” is perceived as
1-Pompous
2-self-centered
3-boastful
4-narcissitic
5-sociopathic
6-boring
7-Trumpish
Might want to suggest that your nuns check out the Sermon on the Mount. Except for sticking “But” or “For” or “Verily” in front of the pronoun (another thing the nuns probably would have graded down for), Jesus himself begins a whole bunch of paragraphs with “I.”
